Matt’s 30 Blades 30 Days Challenge
on: August 02, 2022, 03:05:03 AM
Day 1 - Civivi Baby Banter. Why did I start with this blade? It’s small, nonthreatening and fits in your hand so well. In fact, when you carry this knife you sometimes forget it’s in your pocket.

Nice! Despite knowing where it's made, I think the Baby Banter would suit my uses quite well. I'm a big fan of the Spyderco UKPK and the other "world legal" options.

Since I'm participating in two challenges as it is, joining in on this one is a bit much. But I'll definitely be following along!

Day 2 - CRKT  Pilar - Another small, but “fits larger in your hand than you expect knife”. D2 Blade with a super durable shape or profile.

It's 0.15" (3.68 mm). The modified sheepsfoot blade is great for opening boxes or even a little prying. Think this is the perfect blade for people that like to use their blades for "noncutting" tasks. Plus it is not expensive if you have to replace it.

Day 3 - Kershaw 1660CCBW Leek, I did not buy one of these for the longest time. Just seemed  like a gimmicky knife, however that all changed after my daughter of all people placed one in my hands. Now I have at least 4 or 5. The speed safe opening is effortless and the composite D2/Sandvick 14C28N looks awesome.

Nice! Love a leek, do you ever find yourself using the safety?

That is indeed a fine-looking Leek! :tu: I have a Chive, and I've awlways used the safety when carrying it.

You know the safety makes total sense, but I never think to use it to be honest.

I like my Leek but I'm a bit afraid to carry it without the safety. And with the safety it's too fiddly to open and I'd rather carry something that's not made for one handed opening entirely.  But mine has the pocket clip where it was factory installed - tip down. So I look at your photo and see that yours is tip up. Meaning if carried in the right front pocket, the edge of the pocket will work as a safety. Only took me several years to figure
Anyway, I'll be following along with interest your challenge  :tu:
P.S. to celebrate my newly acquired knowledge I'll change the position of the clip and carry the leek today
Edit: I will not carry the leek today, one of the crews stripped. I did not force it at all, was driving it straight in...

I carried a Leek for about a week once.  It’s a fun little knife, but proved to be a bit small for my taste in single blade locking folders, and also not as rust resistant as I had hoped.

With regard to the safety, I never deliberately engaged it, but never had a problem with the Leek accidentally coming open in my pocket.  I did have problems with the safety engaging itself while riding around in my pocket; I would go to use the knife, and discover that the safety had locked it closed.  If I planned to carry the Leek regularly, I would probably remove the safety.

Day 6 - Sandrin Torino. This is another “rust proof” knife with a Tungsten Carbide blade. Has a HRC of 71 on the Rockwell scale. Opening mechanism is similar to Demko’s knives, but not quite a smooth IMHO.
