Then, I used the contents of that smaller box (another US-made Uncle Henry LB7) to open THE box!
What; you thought I was gonna show the actual opening of the box? Not happening!

Very good.  Looks like it arrived in a somewhat .....aaah..... distressed condition.  I actually carried an Uncle Henry like that one.  It made my pants sag on one side but was a good knife.  What do you think about the Sodbuster?  Best wishes.  G

So far I like the Imperial quite a bit. I hesitate to even mention the price, because it doesn't take a very good knife to be worth $6.99. Let me put it this way: I have a Robert Klaas (formerly Kissing Crane) stockman pattern knife, and I like this Imperial more than the Klaas. Both are quite usable, though.

I already had a US made LB7 as well as US made 6OT and 7OT, and a couple of the newer LB7s. I prefer them over a Buck 110, which I also have. Enough said about that, so as to not offend any Buck fans.

I found a Camillus No.68 Stockman in the box. That one is my first pick. I like US made Camillus knives, carbon steel knives in general, and the quality of the carbon steel produced by Camillus during that era compares favorably to any carbon steel blade on the market, in my opinion.
I haven't decided yet if I will pick anything else, but if I do I will definitely put something worthwhile back.

So, here is the Camillus 68:

I found one more already, and I'm still looking. I'll post the final tally in a couple days, and make it ready for the next recipient.  :tu:

I have been waiting to hear how friend Aztec's dig for ancient Thesaurus bones has been.  There is probably lots of other stuff to dig through before you get to good Thesaurus fossils.  Stuff the dog buried in the yard.  Ordinary dinosaurs like Killabytes and their larger, fiercer cousin the Gigabyte.  Prehisterical sharks like Megalodonts with all the baby shark doo, doo, doo, doo, doodoo.
I suspect he is busy with Daddy work today.  Eating fried chicken.  Corn muffins.  Peach pie.  Dinosaur bones can wait.
Best wishes.  G

Speaking of Thes-thingies, the box is kind of a Ship of Theseus situation. Is it still the same box with all the stuff that's gone in and out?

Okay, here's the final tally. I already mentioned that I like Camillus carbon steel knives. I found the ubiquitous electrician's knife, so I grabbed it. I've seen these all my life and have had at least one. I'm happy to have another.
Also, I grabbed a key fob mini-tool. That might come in handy on my motorcycle.
I added some items to the box, including a knife I know someone will want. So who is next? Let's keep this moving! Don't pass it up; it's a lot of fun and there are some great items in the box!

I didn't think too much of these TL-29 knives at one time.  I think I had one before I took the Craftsman out of the Surprise Box.  These are actually pretty useful multitools.  I used to see boxes full of these things at a flea market.  All of them looked like they had been stored in a coal mine.  I wonder what the reamer on the first Camillus you kept was for?  Maybe a pipe?
There's still a bunch of stuff left in that box.  Maybe there is the kid next door who would appreciate something?  I don't think anyone here would object.  Best wishes. G

Yeah, probably pipe and whatever else needs to be reamed or scraped. I use a reamer or scraper on a knife somewhat frequently. Quite often, I use the sheepsfoot blade on a Stockman for that purpose. I read an article years ago about the stockman knife protocol; I think it was by Hal Swiggett. Basically the clip point main blade was kept at a normal sharpness and used for most cutting chores, the spey was kept razor sharp and used for the occasional task that required a super sharp edge, and the sheepsfoot was sharpened at a steep angle and used for rough work such as reaming and scraping, opening cans, etc. That's the way I have used a stockman ever since, and it does make for a very utilitarian knife. That Camillus is pretty similar to a stockman except the sheepsfoot is replaced with that reamer and the blade positioning is different.

The box is a concept, manifested in physical form. Because the concept of what the box should be has changed since its conception, it is not the same box.  Originally, Sherry just wanted to give away some of her surplus knives and her idea was to spread the wealth by sending the box to one random member who would pick out one thing without adding to it and then send the box to someone else, and this would continue until the box was empty.  However, the members who received the box kept adding to it so the box would never be empty and grew the box from a small to a large priority mail service box.  This was then divided into two medium boxes, one of which was sent to European members.  Therefore, we did, briefly, have two identical Sos Surprise box giveaway boxes each of which was part of the original, traveling at the same time, and identified as the Sos surprise box giveaway box.   It is no longer a giveaway box but more correctly a trade box. Now comparable to a library box on a rural road, or a penny bowl next to a cash register; if you need something take it, and if you have something to contribute leave it.  The difference is you have to pay the shipping to the next person whether or not you take anything out of the box or contribute to it.

One box stayed in the US and the other went to Australia, right?  It circulated briefly between NZ and Australia, then disappeared.  Somewhere.  Best wishes.  G

In fact I do know a kid who has been wanting a Boy Scout knife, and there is a Schrade scout knife (recent production) in the box. I'll grab that one and give it to him. Pic later.

I grabbed this Scout knife for a kid I know (a friend's son) who wanted one. This is a newer Schrade Old Timer.
While I was rummaging around in there, I also found this Irish Imperial/Frontier Trapper. This one might find its way into the upcoming Traditional Challenge. As may the 23OT, if I don't see my buddy to give it to him before then!

Okay, who wants the box next? It can be in your hands in just a few days! I've added some interesting stuff, too.

Good time for somebody to sign up.  A surprising number of members don't read the Break Room threads.  Reach out and ask a friend if he would like to play the Surprise Box game.  Reliable members is what we need.  Somebody new to participate.  US members only, of course.  We can't ship it out of the country.  Laws, customs, etc.
Nobody really loses at this box game.  We have had some really good stuff grabbed up by lucky participants in the past.  Get on the list and send your address to WECSOG.  You could be getting the box in just a matter of days.
Best wishes.  G

Well, the package got to Austin and then got transferred to the local delivery folks.  It... may take a bit to get to Liberty Hill.

Obviously a back-up bicycle in the video clip.  Did you see the bicycle in the background that the rider originally had?  Nothing left but one wheel and a seat.  Probably the work of bicycle stealers in Austin.  They stole all the parts that weren't chained down.  Thank goodness he had a spare bike.
Best wishes, G

Who knew they made pocket bicycles for just such an occasion.

Fret not though, they have the best canine on the case for the missing bicycle parts.

It was a pretty good trick to get that tortoise to give a piggy-back ride, but how in the world did they put a collar on that coyote?  Went downtown this morning and had a look-see at some weed wackers.  Might buy one after the first of the month sometime.  The deer have been pitching in with ground maintenance and doing a fair job of it.  Might have to buy a cheap Stihl straight shaft cutter.  They had one on sale.
Best wishes.  G
