My plan is to continue to carry a 91mm SAK during the challenge. Probably something pretty basic like a Spartan or Tinker. Maybe a Recruit (84mm, of course).

But I'll leave it in my pocket and always reach for the Minichamp first. I'll only use the larger SAK in the event the Minichamp is not up to the job for whatever reason. I'll also make sure to document what happened in my post for that day - that's most of the point of these challenges (beyond the fun of it), to see what the limits of various SAKs are in practical use over a reasonable length of time.

Quite acceptable.
I always carry a large stockman with me except when I'm doing a challenge that provides an alternative.  (Spartan, Recruit,  even a Bantam in the Tween challenge).
I also always carry a MiniChamp which seems to be able to handle 90% of the things I need done.

I'm absolutely certain that there's nothing against carrying extra tools, just need to use the required tool for the challenge.

To those that don't carry a small Victorinox, ie 58mm, on a regular basis you'll be surprised how much can be accomplished with one.

Meant to add to keep in mind the true limitations of whatever it is that you're doing.  I really hate to see folks downing a tool because they used it wrong.

Now, I cn't wait till Wednesday to get started.

Now If I can remember to take a picture every day... That's another story.

This is what I'm looking forward to.  Trying to find out all that I can do with my 58mm.

I'm not "boots on the ground " anymore (IT guy) like I was with my previous jobs so I don't need my SAK/knife as much as I used to but I still use it on a daily basis.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

I always carry a 58mm (Rambler is my preferred model) along with a 91mm or 84mm SAK, normally 2 or 3 layers.

Over the past year, I've really come to appreciate the wood saw, despite living in a suburban/urban environment, so I'll often carry a Camper or Hiker and rely on the Rambler for scissors. I often find that when I really need some scissors the smaller 58mm version is the perfect size because it's some delicate task or something needs trimming in a very confined space.

So, I'm pretty sold on 58mm SAKs (the tiny blade isn't my favorite thing, but  :dunno:). With this challenge, I'm really interested to see two things - whether I'll get much use out of the tools the Minichamp has over the Rambler, and how the smaller tools do for tasks where I would ordinarily reach for a larger SAK.

I've been carrying an Alox Mini Champ to get warmed up for November 1 (I don't want to pop an Achilles tendon on Day 1, you know), and you can get a lot done with it.  The main blade on the 58mm's are a little dainty, but they do most things that you need a blade for.  An index finger on the spine of the blade seems to work for me to keep things steady.  And the cuticle pusher makes a decent flat driver.

After an evening using the MC to carve mini-pumpkins into works of horror, I now have sufficient penetrative stab wounds on each hand not to feel any further pain across the month of Novembers MC challenge....... :D :woohoo:

DAY 1
With the primary character in scene one.... old type MiniChamp.  Only one thing unusual about this multi pointed prickly red thing.  It was a present from a cat.  Not a Cool Cat from the hood.  A real cat.  I bought a few red joy nuggets from a friend here, and when the local mail jokers finally decided they had all the fun they could extort out of me, finally grudgingly gave me the package there it was.  One extra red thingie.  A tiny one, but rather thick.  A MiniChamp.
I contacted the seller with my little bonus find and voiced my opinion that maybe the cat had put the wee present in with my purchases.  (Not that I was going to give it back, understand)  He confirmed that his dear kittie had probably put it there.  To help him get rid of some of his extra effluvia.  So there it is.  And here IT is.  No uses so far.  Just got up and had just enough energy to lift a single pop tart and mash down the toaster latch.  Whew.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

Great start, peoples.  Love the tater lantern from yesterday.

Powernoodle Day 1

I used an alox Mini Champ to open a new Mini Champ with thermoplastic cellulose ester scales.  Maybe in 10 years it will look as good as Gary's MC.  Also ready for action is a midnite Mini Champ.  She's a little chunky.

My little MC has already been put into service... by helping me fend off an angry mob.  I couldn't get that coffee bag opened fast enough this morning.  And this was my own family!  Sheesh...
