There is always room for innovation.
I would bet they haven't even scratched the surface.
It just takes time and I am happy with the "slow burn"

Let us look no further the efforts of "champagne" coloring. That is more than paint, that is innovation in itself, metallurgy maybe? It is Something but it is more than just adding paint.

While we wait though, I LOVE color variants.

Honestly the Free P4 feels like the last big innovation in the multitool market to me. Turning a traditional Leatherman into a completely one-hand operable tool was a pretty significant engineering challenge. I love the Arc, but it’s ultimately just a P4 with a slightly different toolset and a premium blade.

Roxon is probably the company that’s experimenting most with the traditional pliers-based multitool at the moment, and it’s very cool to see someone trying to push beyond the classic Leatherman designs, but so far I wouldn’t say they’ve actually succeeded with any of their attempts. At the very least, they all come off as gimmicks to me and none of them are serious candidates for replacing my EDC Leatherman tools. Some ideas like the Flex have real promise, though: they just need to take the next step beyond “cool concept” and really sweat the details to make everyday interaction with the tool feel smooth and polished.

I use the ARC a lot, and I don't think they can add any coating to the tools without negatively affecting the functionality.  It needs the smooth tools so they can slide across each other easily.  A guy can still wish though

Well, I guess I was wrong.  It has black tools    :woohoo:  It's $275  :ahhh

Matte black PVD coating on the handles gives it a satin-finish appearance
Champagne DLC coating on the blade, locks, fasteners and pocket clip.

Very high quality materials.

Impressive. I had worried they were just going to slap black oxide on everything and call it a day. That looks gorgeous. Guess Leatherman’s taking another bite out of my wallet…

Yeah...

Not that I haven't spent that, or close to it, for collectible tools I really wanted, but would I carry it and use it the same way that I would a $100 (or less) tool?     Looking at the top of that page, I could buy a Surge that I wouldn't care as much about using, and a Topo Signal to match my Skeletool.

First world problems...

Yeah, probably, but that is part of the charm of BO tools.  Although, this one isn't BO, so I wonder how differently it will wear.  You'll have to share  :tu:

Are the plier head and implements DLC or BO?  I’m hoping DLC. I really can’t tell.

The ARC Obsidian is Man Jewelry, or a binky for big boys.  A talisman.  And yes I would like to have one, but not at whatever the MSRP will be.  But like the Sebenza, the ARC has evolved way past mere utility into the domain of jewelry or art or entertainment.  We won't be seeing these on the belts of roofers or ranchers.

I think the regular Arc isn’t likely to be seen on the belts of roofers or ranchers, either. It’s a Leatherman for knife steel nerds, who disproportionately tend to be people who do not actually use knives all day in their job. This is similar to how gun nuts or power tool nuts are usually not people who carry and use guns or power tools all day for their job. People view tools they use professionally to be mundane and utilitarian, not novel and fascinating, so they don’t usually build a hobby around them. As with any rule of thumb, there are exceptions, but that’s been my general observation.

It goes for $275. Cost me $294 with tax and shipping.

That's a little true, but every tool and knife maker does the same thing.  Most ranchers I knew used Bucks almost exclusively, and Buck Knives has a huge variety of handle materials, colors and blades.  For the ARC itself, I don't know if a rancher or roofer would use one, but I use the smurf out of mine taking care of my house and yard.  I just used it to repair my washing machine this morning (grunt, grunt).  Yes, I could have done the same thing with a Walmart special, but I make good money and I like to buy nice things.  In that sense, maybe it is a little bit of a binky.  :dunno:  A damn nice and useful binky at least  :tu:

I pulled the trigger because I thought that it was limited edition, but apparently it’s special edition.  Not sure that I would have got it if I had known. Especially hearing rumors that 2 more versions are coming.

What's the MSRP on this one, peoples?  The REI website is not showing it.  Thanks.

And yeah, I do want one.  Whether I want to drop $900 on one is yet to be decided.

Maybe Poncho and I will split the cost of one and have joint custody.  Mail it back and forth on the first day of each month.
