Amazon needs to quit sending such big boxes for small items.
:iagree: And they're not the only ones who are in that bad habit.

Hard to believe that there is only 2 days left after today for those who want to finish the month     :ahhh
Some clarification is needed here. Were you counting today as one of the two days, or is this a 31-day challenge? And will there be a Scout badge?

30 Scouts in 30 Days: Day 29

I'm not sure what happened to this green Imp Ireland Camper. A lot of Scouts are known for strong backsprings, but not usually these ones. I've tried washing, wd-40, canned air, oil, just about everything and I still can't get the bottle opener without pliers (and most of the others aren't much better). Also, weird patina for stainless steel. It's a shame, I have a friend getting into collecting knives who expressed interest in it (mostly due to the scale colors) and a scout is a great starter knife. I don't know that I want to give him a knife he can't open.

It's kind of tradition to go to the end of the month for the Dean Challenge but not mandatory. You'll have to ask BPRoberts about the status of a badge as it's his challenge. There will be one but I don't know if he has one in the works yet.

Day 29:

Here is early in the challenge vs today. A month of carry can put a little patina on a blade. Most of it was due to a little food prep about halfway or so.

If you have a sonic cleaner you could try that.  I had one that was a real nail breaker.  I ended up oiling it, then running it through the sonic cleaner with really warm water and soap several times.  The oil helped dislodge more of the crud that was in the joint and the sonic cleaner would vibrate it out.  It was never as smooth as a SAK but it was much more manageable after a few times of that.

Day 29

Cut up half a stogie to enjoy before dinner, then got cracking on getting dinner ready while the wife finished up grocery shopping.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

The new spearpoint with an old favorite. I would have a difficult time choosing between a word peasant and an opinel. Generally I reach for the peasant as a hard work knife, but it's definitely more clunky in the pocket.

Dean51 Traditional Challenge
Day 30 of 30

Final catch-up post.

Over the last 30 days there is no telling how many of these cabinet latches were unlocked at work with my Scout. A couple hundred I would guess. Of course I have a proper key, but wheres the fun in that?

I honestly did not think I would enjoy carrying a full sized Scout, but I was wrong. It was actually quite comfortable in the pocket. The blade design was effective as well. I never used the awl or canopener. Being my only Remington knife, I am quite pleased with the way it performed. Good quality. I reckon it is indeed a keeper.

Thanks BPRoberts for coming up with the idea! Congrats to everyone that completed the Dean51 Traditional Challenge!

Day 30 GEC

My GEC Family  Photo

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

They each survived the assigned chores.

The model 23 (top) is a beast!  Able to do any chore imaginable by me.  The skinner blade developed more patina during this challenge despite the very strong, nail breaking strong back springs.   It will return to the display case after an oil wipe down.

The English Jack (2nd down) was my favorite to use. This  is perfect in my hand. The pen blade is large enough for many tasks and the clip serves well for everything as well.

The Liberty Jack (3rd) found favor with me, serving pocket duty with no bulky issues and would hide away without printing.

The Barlow, is a Barlow, in awl  manners. Well built, stout and sturdy.  Just a tad small for my hands, yet capable !

I admit, that do to Dean’s passion, shared with David and Steve, my respect and knowledge of traditional pockets knives would have never grown, or my pocketbook shrunk. 😳

It is true honor to show respect to an excellent member of the MTo family that shared his knowledge with such integrity, and pride.  :hatsoff: :salute:

Day 30: Last day of the challenge!! Cut up some more boxes. The edge could use a little touching up, but the knife has done everything I need it to over the past 30 days. I found myself missing the convenience of an OHO folder from time to time. This is the longest my Sebenza has gone without cutting something since I bought it that I can remember.

If I could design my own traditional-ish knife, it would be styled like a scout knife, but include the addition of a discreet pocket clip, phillips driver, scissors, and an OHO locking blade. It would be an unconventional tool for sure, but one that would have everything needed in an edc knife combined into one package.

DAY 30...final day....

Now I know it was stated no SAKs, but I'll ask the collective here for judgement....?

The most praised knife I have (apart from the original PST Leatherman that my father bought me), is a pruning knife given to me by a famous horticulturist David Ridgeway....I studied commercial horticulture when I was 16, and it has kind of stayed with me, thanks to David.

I was inspired by agriculture growing up on the farm, but I was shown how beautiful plants can be from David, which has lead to me eventually doing a botanical / environmental chemistry PhD...that first little push...I now work hard to keep the natural environment safe for all in my job.

It has been repaired once, and I had to fight to get it done...

....I think a worthy traditional.

Being that it's a Swiss pruning knife  and not a SAK it is acceptable in this challenge  :tu:
