The December 2024 Utility Knife Challenge
on: June 23, 2024, 01:27:33 AM
Sometimes a blade that can be tossed when it gets to dull is advantageous, especially if the job is nasty or the user isn't great at sharpening. Having recently performed such a task, I figured it would be fun to have a challenge wherein participants used knives with disposable blades. This will be a 30-day challenge that runs in December of 2024.

The main idea is that participants' primary cutting tool has a blade that is replaceable and can be purchased in bulk. The smaller the effective working edge, the better. Both dedicated cutting tools and multis are acceptable. Below are some examples of what could be carried:

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Though they are cool, knives like the Buck Selector and Case XX-Changer are outside the scope of this challenge.

The usual general rules awlsk apply: post a photo (preferably in use) of your carry every day of the challenge, stick with one or switch it up as you see fit, 'fess up if your primary tool couldn't hack it, and have fun!

So, who's in?

I forgot about the snap-off kind. That would be most welcome, and I'd love to see one used in the challenge! :like:

I just received a set of 3 WORKPRO folding and locking utility knives that were only $1.68 for all 3 on AliExpress a week ago, but the cheapest I can find now is $7.88.  Not sure if the price went up or if they gave me a big discount because it was my first order from them.  It's still a very good deal as these same tools are close to $30.00 a piece marked SwissTech.  I still can't post pictures on my new computer but here's the link to what I got even if the price is higher.  These look the same, but I can't tell if they have the locking mechanism that mine have.

Are tap knives eligible? I have a nice Olfa snap-off tap knife I can use.

I love my Gerber EAB. Milwaukee Fastback is a must.
Fiskars pro and the new small one, although the big one is much better.
Roxon has a utility blade holder for the tools that swap blades. I also have the Knipex utility knife.
I'm already excited about this.

If it's the sort that allows you to snap off a section of dull blade...absolutely!

Don’t know if it’s a cheat that I carry and use a utility knife pretty much everyday anyway?

FX Pointed me here, as I recently picked up a folding box cutter.
After a week of use, I am already aware of it's pro's and cons, and I have delegated it exclusively for package opening and disposal. As that doesn't happen every day, I think I'll give a pass on this one.

Got a new one especially :tu:

Bought the same one for a builder mate as a thank you for some work he’d done for me a few months ago and he really rated it

Saw it for A$17 the other day so couldn’t resist

Looking at the list, how can I not sign up with this crew?

A little safety warning:  I was given a freebie like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082K9SZ3R/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?pd_rd_i=B082K9SZ3R&pd_rd_w=K1qlu&content-id=amzn1.sym.c4606765-78ec-444e-9319-716ceb6c5a61&pf_rd_p=c4606765-78ec-444e-9319-716ceb6c5a61&pf_rd_r=QZ4637GHTCKHTVMTKMEB&pd_rd_wg=xOlrC&pd_rd_r=370c5d5a-27f5-4404-8f32-12abe058a87c&s=hi&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWxfdGhlbWF0aWM&th=1  It was small and light.  Perfect for my fire coat pocket, but the blade can get pushed out, and eventually you reach in your pocket for a glove and find a punji stick instead.  :o
