I'm not gonna ramble today, both because it's late here and the photo will be of some interest...

Day 9

Since comis appears to be on hiatus, I asked AzteCypher to help with badge design. Here's my basic idea. Apologies for my complete lack of artistic skill.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

Utility knife record: 7-0.

I hope AzteCypher does not mind me jumping in.
I like the black and the blue.

Diabetic hack.  I used the WorkPro to cut out the no-drip spout from this detergent bottle and et voilà, I have a new sharps disposal container for used needles and lancets that will last me for the next four to six months.

Had the Stanley with me again today. No real action except for opening three Amazon bubble wrap envelopes.

Thanks for sharing your Stanley utility knives.

Of course, I'm not a part of this challenge.  Just reading and enjoying.  Curiosity led me to get my ancient Stanley out for a look.  I had an old one that had a fancy design on the handles, but I let a friend have it years ago.  This is the only one I have left.  Good thing I cleaned it up some.  It was pretty sad before.  Blades are in the handle, naturally.  Still works but blade changes take a little while.  Can't exactly put it in your pocket either, since the blades don't retract.  Tool belt or bucket was the idea.  Best wishes.  G

@Cody6268: I hear you on the old tooling. Never mind that consumables for model kits have gotten insanely expensive. I'm pretty well done with that hobby.

@AzteCypher: you sure had some good surprise box picks! :salute:

@kaevin: I see the resemblance, and I never knew what that little dude was called. Thanks for enlightening me!

@ReamerPunch: fantastic work! :hatsoff: Let's see what AzteCypher comes up with and put it to a vote.

@Alan K: that's a pretty good hack. I had a job doing vendor-managed inventory of phlebotomy supplies. I imagine those sharps containers weren't exactly cheap.

@JonesE: I like that bright yellow! :tu:

@IMR4198: an oldie but a goodie!

Day 10

One should be able to change a utility knife blade with common hand tools (or no tools at all) and without consulting the manual. The EAB fits those bills. Just remember that the screw will come out, so don't lose it! The MiniChamp screwdriver was a little small, but it got the job done.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

A Stanley blade was put in the silver EAB, while the black one got a DeWalt blade. This will present some good opportunities for test and evaluation. The originals are still good, so I'm keeping them in reserve.

Day 10:

Not a lot going on.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Basically, the only thing I accomplished was returning a TV antenna to Walmart and buying a PS5 Dualsense to replace the kind of battered Xbox One controller I had for about four years and mostly used with things like Flight Simulator, BeamNG, and American Truck Simulator.

I like the feel much better, and I fell in love with the basic PS layout over a decade ago when I picked up my PS2. The trigger and buttons are so much smoother and more precise. Only problem is that, so far, only American Truck Simulator has native support for the controller. I found that in Flight Simulator X, it worked more or less as a supplemental to the Xbox controller.

NT Cutter A-1000RP

Front with the standalone triangular snapper

Back

It is obvious after A-500RP, is A-1000RP. Basically, it in terms of working mechanism they are essentially the same. The body is made from die cast aluminum, painted slick silver. The outline is straight lined and minimalistic. The number of gripping "hole" patterns at the top and bottom is less. The spring in the body is somehow yellow/brass-ish looking. I am not sure about the material used.

In original packing

Compared to A-500RP, it is heavier with more refined (?) outline. It is cold to touch. The paint is superb and hence I don't want to scratch it, which is mostly the reason it is still sitting in the box unlike the A-500RP. The slick paint also makes it more slippery, but not too slippery that lead to issue. Seeing the A-500RP being discontinued and A-1000RP still relatively easy to find, things may get changed and I may carry this more often.

No blade action today.

With lull, I opened the handle to examine my spare blade. Since it is a wharncliff shape I swapped blades.

@cody6268: I think I see a First Gear fire engine on the shelf! :tu:

@BPRoberts: I also passed a Rebar on to a new owner...but it's been largely replaced by an ST300.

@kaevin: the A-1000RP looks pretty good!

@ReamerPunch: sweet pliers!

@Alan K: I have a similar cutter that'll make an appearance before the challenge ends.

@AzteCypher: I bet those are good!

@JonesE: quiet days are fine by me!

@LoopCutter: that black oxide PST...

Day 11

The first round of compare and contrast got underway this evening. Our test subject is receipt paper. The Stanley blade did a good job, but the DeWalt did even better. I was expecting them to be evenly matched, so the end result was a bit of a surprise.

I've debated carrying the ST300 after I did the Powerlock last month. It's not impossible in the pants I wear to work most days, but the Rebar is about 99% as capable for the stuff I need and much more comfortable in the pocket.

Day 11:

Been enjoying my Sharpmaker and decided to get the CBN rods to help make it easier to restore some really dull knives I have sitting around. Older ones that either went unsharpened for years or, in some cases, were sharpened so badly they would've been better off without. Lockdown assisted with packaging.

Day 12

OLFA LTD-04
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

OLFA and NT cutter are two of the bigger brand of Japanese cutters. For some reason I don't like to get OLFA they usually features more stubby/squarish design. But they are high quality, on par, if not better than NT cutters.

This OLFA LTD-04 is a "limited edition" (LTDs are limited of their best sellers/classics) of 191-B and PA-2 difference being color. They are the OLFA auto reload A sized light duty cutters (they also make L sized MZ-AL 168B and PL-1). The body is mostly made with high quality plastic with some metal rails, spring plates and part of the slider. It comes with the "excel blade" ultra sharp black blade.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
The back, including a detailed instruction label.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
The cutter itself doesn't seem to be easy to take apart. The tip features similar "bend" feature like the A-500RP and A-1000-RP to stabilize the blade.

To change draw a new blade, push the slider all the way out...

... and pull the used blade out.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

And then pull the slider all the way back, the spring plate in the compartment back will push a new blade to the slider.

To load the blade compartment with extra blades, flip over to the back and push the push button at the end and pull the part around the push button away from the tip, compartment will pushed open by the spring plate.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Then put the blade inside the compartment, maximum number of blades is 5, making it a 5+1 cutter.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Then just push the back plate back and slide the end part back towards the tip.

The whole back plate spring with the swinging back part really similar to film camera. This is a very interesting design.

In summery, this LTD-04/PA1 is a high quality auto reload light duty cutter. It has plastic handle but does not feel cheap. It is comfortable to hold. The outlook is retro or too stubby/squarish, depending on how you view it. Some actually thinks it is cute. The loading mechanizing is fun and interesting. Which gives you a "reload the film camera" ritual. For the price one may want to have a full metal cutter, but due to the number of parts and complexity, it is harder to make all parts with metal, and the weight will be much heavier.. A500/A1000 loading is less hassle. However, the LTD-04/PA-1 auto lock is more powerful (deeper teeth). If you are after collecting "Stuffs with interesting mechanism" or "like to fiddle with something" you may find this interesting.

@cody6268: I think I see a First Gear fire engine on the shelf! :tu:

Thanks!

I found it a few years back for less than $20 shipped. First Gear has made some nice stuff, but it's often priced dearly--the IH Durastar ambulance often brings $150-$200, and other fire rigs usually north of $50--particularly the Macks. Seems the Shell stuff was overproduced, and it often goes for much cheaper than actual departments or more popular special series.

It's an International R-190 issued in the Shell series back in 1994. It's lettered as being a plant protection rig for a Houston refinery. I found an old $75 price sticker rattling around in the box--I suspect that the previous owner probably paid that.

Nice!

Several years ago, someone liquidated a coin collection by putting them in a vending machine at a local dollar store. I ended up getting coins from all over the world that likely weren't even worth the quarter I paid, but still, it was an neat find.

Then there was that '60s French Franc coin the bank gave me in the place of a nickel. Really need to get around to making a display for those foreign coins.
