If you could only keep one MT, fixed blade and folder?
on: January 06, 2025, 01:12:42 PM
Challenge accepted. Referring to Gary's answer from the other thread.

"To me, it seems like friend Krista's suggestion that everyone could keep 5 favorites is a cop out.  Everybody knows that the pro forma question is which is it if you could only keep ONE.  Of course, perhaps she figured nobody would answer that one considering the rabidly addicted tool maniacs on this site.  Only ONE criterion could cause pain even thinking about it?
Who knows?  Krista could follow up with "Which one pocketknife would you keep if...."  Might just be waiting to twist the knife, so to speak.  Shivers.
Best wishes.  Gary
  "

So here is my list.

Fixed blade: J.P. Peltonen ranger M95. Even thought I have fixed blades with fancier steels, I still pick up Peltonen when I need good work horse knife.

MT: "super surge". It has the toolset I want and and nothing extra. It just feels better in hand than surge.

Folder: Benchmade bugout with after market carbon fiber scales. I'm not a folder girl.  So to be honest I would rather ditch the folder and keep another MT, maybe my companion.

My collections are small, so my task was relatively easy. Now let us see yours.

It would be impolite to not play along with Krista's game, so....

Fixed blade:  Kiser.  It is smallish and sharp, and I like the handles.  I have carried it a few times.  I don't carry a fixed blade outdoors often anymore and can't carry it in public.

Plier based multi:  Same Leatherman Kick I posted in my last Krista Kwiz.  No sense in boring everyone with another photo of it.

Folder:  I take it that folder doesn't include a SAK.  Single blade, lock, maybe a pocket clip?  I don't have any love for the whole genre.  My neighbor sold knives and gave me a Benchmade to carry for a while.  It was sharp and well made.  I piddled with it a while and took it back to him.  I do have several of these kinds of knives, but don't really like any of them.

I am really glad you decided to join the forum and are bringing in some fresh threads for us to reply to.  Plus, I finally got exposed to Moomin.  Didn't know they existed.  I found the Moomin video series on Archive.org and watched one.  Best wishes.  Gary  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Thanks Gary for your kind words and thanks for playing along. Life doesn't have to be so serious. I give myself a right to change my mind next week.

SuperTool 300, basically a massive Rebar.
For the folder, the Ruike Hussar. I don't have that many folders. If I had anything better maybe something else.
And for fixed blade the LTWright Bravo 1. Or the Joker Campero, or Lynx. I love big, comfortable handles.

I don't have the need to carry knives along with my EDC. So while I enjoy playing with my small collection,, I think I would be very happy with the Leatherman ARC if I could only keep one.  :tu:

Well, after giving this some thought, here’s what I’ve come up with:

MT:  Vic Deluxe Climber Plus.  There’s certainly a temptation to maximize the complement of tools if you only get one MT.  And if one were going to be stranded on a deserted island or starring in the next season of “Alone”, this would probably be the right choice.  However, when I think about my real life, day-to-day use, I’d rather have something that covers most of my needs and I’d be comfortable tossing in my pocket every day, than have something with more capability but so heavy that it gets relegated to the desk or glovebox.

Fixed blade:  Good quality chef’s knife with 8-10” blade and kydex sheath.  I don’t have anything quite like this.  I’ve tried EDCing fixed blades, but generally find folders much more convenient.  To be frank, I don’t get much use out of them for hiking/camping either, except for food prep.  Kydex sheath obviously makes it more convenient to take on the go.  If I had to pick from my existing collection, the A.G. Russell California Bowie doesn’t have the kydex sheath but is one of the only knives I have with a blade in this size range.

Folder:  Like the fixed blade, I don’t have anything that quite ticks all the boxes for me, though I have some that are close.  What I’d like is a frame lock with about a 4” blade of a premium steel.  Textured Ti handles, with an open design to facilitate cleaning and keep weight down.  A flipper tab, and a well-designed pocket clip.  Total weight around 4 - 4.5 oz.  A ZT 0452 is probably the closest I have to  this; would be even better if I could get a ZT 0452Ti.  ZT 0450, Fox Bravado, Kershaw Highball XL SFO, and Case Marilla, all have positives and negatives.

Pics later…

If we're talking heavier folders, I prefer the good ol' back lock. Which reminds me: do any MTo members have experience with the Demko "shark lock?" That contraption still strikes me as at least a little unsafe.

Okay, back to topic...

I would need to give extended thought to which multi would be my "one and only, " and it's way too close to taps (lights out) for that.

You might say the same goes for fixed blades, as I haven't used enough of them to say what would really ring my bells. About all I can say for sure is it would be full tang. That said, I do like my ESEE Izula II quite a lot, even though it doesn't see much carry due to ambiguously worded state and local laws. (I assume kitchen cutlery is excluded from this list?)

One folder would be easier: an Opinel. Those just work for me. All I'd have to sort out is which one is the ideal size.

I'll hopefully get some photos soon, though it may take a reminder.

The Opinel would be a tough call. But I think I know which multi I'd keep: a Victorinox Farmer X with ILP/magnifier and 91mm pliers modded in. Unfortunately, I don't own such a thing yet.

Assuming: MT = pliers based, these are tools we own, and folder can = SAK

1) MT - Victorinox spirit
2) Fixed blade - Mora companion (thoug leg it’s a tough call between that and my mora carving knife)
3) folder - Victorinox pioneer

If folder can’t equal a sak, then sub in my Benchmade 555-1 and put the pioneer in the MT slot.

If we can include things we don’t own, then I maybe the Victorinox venture or mora Garberg for the fixed blade.

Right then!

1) Gerber Stowe, the only FB I own, unless you count my grandfather's WW1 bayonet  :dunno: I can't really carry either (UK laws)
2) Custom brass Climber because who doesn't love a SAK with a corkscrew (you know, just in case  :drink:)

3) LM Surge, just because... (awlso can't carry except at work etc.)
They don't like it up 'em!

Ok, so it is quite a bit later, but here is the best I could do out of my existing collection:  A.G. Russell Shopmade California Bowie, ZT 0452, Vic Deluxe Climber Plus

This is just too easy for me,I already carry the same thing every day and have for a long time.

Manix LW

Centerdrive MT

I have no real need for a fixed blade but only own a few ESEE so likely one of those.

I own a bunch of others but have reached the point where I just do not bother much with anything other than what I have learned to rely on every day.

If its not broken dont fix it.

Hmmm, let me think...

My multitool would be my Gen 1 Wave - it has all the tools I'd need. My folder would probably be my Ontario Utilitac II as it's a big, beefy guy that opens fast and locks up tight. It also holds a good edge and is easy to sharpen. As for my fixed blade there's no doubt - my Kabar. It's either a BIG knife or a small machete, but it's been the right hand of the USMC since WW2 and it's pretty easy to see why.

The multitool and fixed blade are easy, but the folder took a little thought.

SwissTool Spirit (CX) is my favorite multitool and can accomplish most things I need.  I love the butter blade works great for a lot of items as long as you have a plain edge, to do what it cannot.

Buck 113 is a nice size for carry and a pleasure to use.  Some might say it is too small for some tasks, but has accomplished everything I need.

The debate for folder was between a SAK Yeoman and my Herman Lefty.  The Herman is an awesome single blade folder, but doesn’t really add anything that the 113 can’t do.  The Yeoman isn’t as good as the Herman as far as a knife, but adds some other function that neither the 113 or Spirit have so that would be my ultimate choice.

Folder: SwissChamp
If I can only have one I’m agoing for the big boy

MT:
LM Wave - Served me so well in the past and currently

If by folder you mean single blade folder the I chose:
None - Never carry or need one.

As for fixed blade

Only one of each huh? I guess I would choose my Fallkniven A1 Pro, my ADV F17 Harpoon, and my old SAK Swisschamp which I can't seem to locate right now.

I can narrow my list to just two, a Swiss Champ and a Buck 110.  I know the Swiss Champ with my eyes closed, and the 110 is pretty much weatherproof and indestructible.

That being said, I'm glad I don't have to make that decision right now!

Good choices despite that lack of anything Swiss, J2000E. :D

I recently found this used EKA folder, which quite impressed me. It looks like it lost a logo or something on the handle, but otherwise it seems basically indestructable. :dunno:

With the fear of totally displaying my incompetence, I must say, that I was not familiar with this brand before I came across this. ::)

It seems that they make good quality knives, as you would expect from a Swedish knife manufacturer.
Have they been hiding a bit in the shadows of the likes of Mora and Fällkniven, or is it just me that have missed them?

edit and PS... Swiss or Swedish... No one knows the difference anyway.

Yours is a contemporary EKA Swede 8 RT.

They have been hiding in the shadows since 1882...  ;)

The EKA name, Eskilstuna Kniffabrik Aktiebolag, came about in around 1917. They got awards at the world fairs in Chicago 1983, Stockholm 1897, Paris 1900.

My favourites are the wood collection from 1998. Sandvik steel and Bubinga. The W11 that I have is a very sturdy skandi cut bushcraft type knife. Very much in a Scandinavian tradition.

And the 1981 Executive series in collaboration with Wenger (for some of them - left in the picture).

Thanks for that J2000E. That's was very enlightening.  :hatsoff: Proud old company, I can tell. Glad to make the acquaintance. :) I will probably notice them everywhere now. ::)

And thanks, Gary. Am emblem of that type and shape does indeed seem to fit. To bad it's lost, but just the same. Doesn't hurt the knife in any way.  :dunno:
