Powernoodle Day 2

The MulWark ratchet was super helpful getting into a small space to tighten a sliding door bracket.  Over the years, many no-no words have been said when trying to tighten this with a screwdriver.

Great pics everyone.   :salute:

I asked ChatGTP Plus about the etymology of "ratchet", and here's what she said:

"Oh, you’re diving into some linguistic flavor today! Alright, let’s break it down.

The word "ratchet" has a layered etymology, depending on whether you’re talking about its mechanical origins or its slang evolution.

**Mechanical Origin**
The OG form of "ratchet" comes from the French word "rochet", meaning a notched wheel or cog. It ultimately traces back to the Old French roche (which meant "rock" or "cliff" and had that rugged, step-like imagery). The English adaptation of "ratchet" in the 1600s described a mechanism that allows movement in only one direction—think of a ratchet wrench or a gear system.

**Slang Evolution**
Fast forward to the early 2000s, and "ratchet" got a whole new life in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). It’s believed to have originated in Louisiana, particularly in Shreveport, where the term was popularized through hip-hop.

One strong theory is that "ratchet" is a phonetic variation of "wretched," which was often used in Southern Black English to describe someone messy, uncouth, or wild. It blew up in pop culture thanks to tracks like Lil’ Boosie’s "Ratchet" (2004), and later, viral hits like Beyoncé's "Bow Down", where she says, "I know when you were little girls, you dreamt of being in my world, don’t forget it, don’t forget it—respect that, bow down, b****es. I took some time to live my life, but don’t think I’m just his little wife, don’t get it twisted, get it twisted, this my s**t, bow down, b****es. I’m so ratchet.”

[Powernoodle's editorial note:  stay classy, Beyoncé!]

Over time, "ratchet" took on multiple meanings—sometimes negative (like being tacky or loud), but also positive in a reclaiming way, celebrating confidence, self-expression, and not giving a d@mn about societal expectations.

So, depending on the context, "ratchet" can mean anything from "trashy and messy" to "liberated and fierce."

Fascinating how words evolve, huh? Language is a ratchet mechanism itself—always moving forward, never going back. 🔥"

Day 2:

Early usage: used the Chapman ratchet in their “gunsmith” set to switch the grips on my 2 Ruger Mark IV’s. I think I like the lighter color on the stainless.

DAY 2
So, as we are moving (in the next few months) Mrs Surge has decided that we need to get rid of (and then replace) some stuff  :pok: ::) :twak:

I noticed that one of the things we are keeping  :dunno: needed adjusting, lest it fall apart before then.

Here's the LM stuff doing the job. This was really more complicated than it should have been just using a normal driver bit

Still, it's not a challenge unless it's done with a wry smile and some cursing  :ahhh

Be good to each other out there  :2tu:
They don't like it up 'em!

Day 2

We did not finish the electrical service changeout yesterday, so I got to go back this morning to finish up  :woohoo:

I carried the Milwaukee mini ratchet today and used it to install a deadfront cover:

Day 1:

Well, I'm not sure if this is some kind of coincidence or perhaps an ominous omen.  But just as we are starting this 30 day ratcheting tool challenge, I happen to have just purchased a Murphy Bed that I am expected to be able to assemble with the tiny allan wrench and a screw driver.   ::)  I assume that this undertaking will span the next 4 to 5 days of my free time.  (hopefully not longer)

Been there, done that

Quote
Anyway,  I carry a Leatherman ratcheting bit driver on me about 5 or 6 days a week.  I also carry several ratcheting drivers in my tool bag.

Day 1
It's late, got off work about an hour ago and realized I completely forgot the challange....

Yea, great start

So here is an introduction to my EDC ratchet, a Craftsman ratching box 1/4 & 5/16. It rides in the leather slip with that 4in Crescent adj wrench

Better late than never

DAY 1

Great start awl  :salute:

I took these yesterday with the intention of posting them later in the day.

However, a neighbour was having birthday party and I'm afraid beer and banter got in the way  :pok:
These are what I envisage carrying mostly for the challenge with the usual caveat that I can't take them to work (they frown upon tools at the airport  :twak:)

Not sure if I'll have any uses today so fingers crossed for a job or two around the house  :dunno:

Stay frosty awl  ;)

If something does comes up you will no trouble taking care of it with those tools  :tu:

Day 2

Happy day!!
Me nephew finally returned the spud wrench he borrowed in December....Definitely not "mini"

Oh well it's back in my tool chest where it belongs. :woohoo:

And why is it called a "spud wrench" you ask: because the alignment punch handle resembles the knives used to dig up potatoes in the 1800s.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

The other ratchet that takes hex bit from the same Rubicon set RGH-40.

Suddenly realized the bit extender in red can take both 4mm and 6.35mm hex drive.

Ares mini ratchet. 72 teeth, inline driver, hole on the head, adds nothing to bit length. And inexpensive.
