Stagnation
on: February 27, 2025, 07:59:43 AM
I used to be a huge collector
Got the bug after I joined over a decade ago
Discovered the great names after previously buying the cheap no brand stuff

Soon discovered
Leatherman, SOG, Gerber, Victorinox which ultimately led me to discovering Wenger.

I was in my element
For years I bought everything I could, then got serious with Wenger…specifically the Rangers.

Hit the burn out and….quit!!

Not collected for a longtime, must be at least 5yrs, if not more??

Popped back to take a look how things have moved on…

Wow, biggest shock is Victorinox… they have truly stagnated. Wenger, their arch rival kept them on their toes, now they bought (and basically killed off the brand) boy have they stagnated!!!!

Since LM dropped their famous logo it seems they dropped innovation too??

SOG comes across as feeble these days compared to how they used to be

Gerber, predominantly made in China it seems…and it shows.

Sad that those early days when all the great names were producing amazing, exciting tools has gone.

Your views??

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

SOG released the PowerPint. Small but powerful.
Gerber released the Dual Force. Slipjoint pliers, long tools, same bit driver as the Center Drive. Also massive.
Victorinox released oho Spirit and SwissTool, and pocket clips. Small things, and hardly innovative, but at least their quality and warranty are still top from what I know.
Leatherman released a ratcheting extension.

Regardless of hobby/collecting area (and I have many) or for actual use, etc. I seek out, collect and use the old stuff. To a high degree everything was of better quality - going back all the way to around the 1940ies. Looking at it from an enviromental perspective it is also sound to use what is already produced compared to buying new stuff (that is often produced to have a shorter lifespan).

Fishing - collector and user (prefered era - 50-70ies)

Watches - collector and user (50-70ies)

Filofaxes - collector and user (80-90ies)

Multitools - collector and user (40-90ies)

Hunting weapons - collector and user (50-90ies)

Vehicles - collector and user (60-1983)

In all these areas of interest - the older stuff is better made, serviceable and beautiful.
