OLight OClip Pro- Anyone else have one?
on: March 23, 2025, 02:35:22 PM
I recently decided that I needed a new light and decided to give the OLight OClip Pro a try- the price was decent (about $40 Canadian), it was USB rechargeable and, most importantly, it came in green.   :D

Honestly I haven't had much of an opportunity to use it yet, having just gotten it yesterday, but I do have some initial observations I'd like to share.

First off, it's WAY smaller than you think it is, or at least it was way smaller than I was expecting it to be.  It is just about as thick as I was expecting, but I figured it was probably close to the height of a 91mm SAK.  As you can see from the photo below, it's quite a bit smaller.

I also like how the buttons are not complicated- I hate an overly complex flashlight, and this one has a lot of versatility that is easily accessible.  You switch from Flood to Spot to Red light with a rotary switch, which clicks solidly into each position.  The teeny icons will help you figure out which is which if you have your glasses on, and it's not dark, which is weird because if it's dark, why do you need a flashlight?

Whatever, it's only three positions, you will probably figure it out pretty quick and remember that the Flood is in the front, the Spot is in the middle and red is in the rear, just like tail lights on a car.

Once you have a selected mode, you can click it on by just clicking the button once or vary the brightness by holding in the power button until the correct level is achieved.  The light will just cycle through it's power levels until you release the button.  It's that simple.

Red also has a flashing mode that is part of the regular cycle, so if you want it flashing it's just as easy as making it brighter.

The power button also has a little LED light in it that is green when the battery is good but turns red when it's low or charging.  When charging it turns green again when it's done.

On the opposite side of the aluminum anodized housing (remarkably solid feeling by the way) is the USB C charging port which is really interesting.  Rather than just having a rubber plug to cover the port it has an aluminum trap door that snaps open and shut with a spring or something.  I am guessing they used a waterproof port or something because they claim that this is IPX6 which is good for heavy rains and stuff, but not full water immersion.

The backside of the light is really cool too- it has a clip that allows you to attach it to a jacket, hat, pack strap or anything else that can fit into it, and a magnet to attach to a car, pole or anything else that you can stick a magnet to- and it seems strong enough to hold the light quite well.

It's been a while since I have been as impressed with a light as I am with this one, at least at this point.  I will take it out into the field and give it a lot more testing before I'm ready to sign off on it, but for now it seems really handy.

Thanks for the quick review Grant. I don’t have one yet, but plan on picking one up shortly. I appreciate your comments on the user interface with the switch. I think this is what sold me on it.

Glad to be of service!

Honestly I hate it when lights get so complicated or have too many modes that it takes you half an hour and sixteen different button pressing methods.

This is as simple as it can get while still having an impressive number of light options.

Just got the Oclip Pro in. Charged it up and clipped it to my backpack. Initial observations mirror Grant’s excellent review. Just wanted to add that it is Molle compatible if that matters to you.

Good point- I just sort of assumed that just about everything with a clip was more or less MOLLE compatible.

What Maxpedition bag is that? It looks pretty cool!

Thanks, It’s a Havyk-1 in the dark blue. Not 100% sure on how I feel, about the color. It is a blueish green color and it seems to change in different lighting conditions. I will say it is nice to have a pack in a color that is not black. For the price on close out it is worth it.

If you want any more pictures or have any questions on the pack just let me know.

Well since you offered..      :pok:

I'm always interested in seeing pictures of people's gear and stuff.  That's kind of the whole reason we have a forum!

Here's my latest Maxpedition pouch.  It's the smallest organizer they have and yet still carries a goodly amount of things.  I haven't quite gotten all the stuff dialed in yet, but I have a few other things to toss in there like an electric arc lighter, small notebook and a pen- probably going to be a Right in the Rain notebook and a Fisher Bullet.

Once I have it properly set up I'll post a lot more photos and more thoughts and observations.

I have a couple of these, and also a couple of the standard Oclips.  I prefer the standard Oclips as I find the switch on the Pro a bit 'fussy". That very minor criticism aside they are a cracking piece of kit. We recently had to chase some vandals away from the local churchyard and my mate said 'it's a pity we don't have a torch with us", "oh but we do" says I and produce my Oclip Pro. It lit up the whole area. My mate said it is amazing that a tiny light do could what, only a few years ago, we would have needed a big Maglite to do. So there is a recommendation for you.  :tu:

Lights/torches were my first hoarding experience, and I continued that tradition by purchasing both the original and Pro OClip models.  The latter is my bedside light.  They are pretty awesome little lights, both in function and output.  The Pro is now on sale at U.S. Amazon Prime for $31.98 shipped.

My father got his yesterday and he was also in love with it immediately.

He really likes it, as I knew he would.  He hasn't been this enamored with a flashlight since the Photon Proton I gave him years ago.

He told me that I always send him the best gadgets and he has always had a fascination with this kind of stuff.

I pointed out that it's because I used to play with his knives and tools and flashlights (when he wasn't looking of course!) when I was a child that created my fascination with these things, so I know what he likes.

So if you enjoy MTO, say thanks to my father!   :D

I mean, it's nice to see that after all these years you still have your priorities straight!   :D

I got the orange one for my father but I haven't seen it in person yet.  I'm glad to see that it looks that great.  I am actually so impressed with this light that I think I know what everyone is getting for Christmas this year!   :D

I like that orange! :tu:

Yeah, it definitely looks pretty awesome!  I was thinking about getting another one for myself, and I think I will have to get an orange one next time around.  It is really handy and simple to use and I like that in a light.  It might be worth having a couple of them around rather than rely on always carrying it.

Currently mine has taken up semi permanent residence in the Maxpedition organizer that now lives in the Maverick, which is handy, but isn't around elsewhere when I need it.

agreed on everything said :salute: I might get more myself, it seems they do seasonal ones sometimes but only in certain colors but I would like to try the "Oclip Ultra" so as soon as it goes on sale  :gimme:

I've always liked orange for tools because of it's visibility cause I tend to put things down in bad places

I agree, but depending on the time of year, bright orange isn't exactly a safe color here either!   :ahhh

I'll let you know what I think of the Ultra when it gets here.  Amazon says it will be here tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

I emailed Olight about a group discount on the Oclip and they sent me a reply of a 10% discount for anything BUT flash sale items and X9R. I thank them for this  :hatsoff: but I personally will wait for bigger sales (20-50% off) but super nice of them to offer us this:

discount code for us: NEWSALECODEZMDC2A

enjoy your Olights! :tu:

Yes,  :drink: I do have one!

A cool tool, at first thought it would larger, and a neat gadget to have in my kit.   Nope, it is small and it is way niftier than my imagination thought.

Thanks DAD for inspiring Grant! :hatsoff:

And,  WhichDawg, for sharing the discount after obtaining!

You're not from Canada but it's like buying a frying pan at Canadian Tire (Canadian automotive store that has branched out into just about everything imaginable) - if it's not on sale this week, it will be in the next two.  Why anyone would buy an Olight at regular price is beyond me.

I have too many Olights as is, but I do peak at the sales.  A few years back they were more rare, maybe quarterly, possibly even only 2 a year when I got into them.  Now if they aren't monthly it's at least every other month.  The sales though might not be quite as good as they once were.
