OLight OClip OUltra OFlashlight
on: April 21, 2025, 05:36:31 PM
Oh boy, not another OLight!   :ahhh

I haven't actually used this one yet- I just snapped a few comparison photos with the OClip Pro.

I assumed it would be the same body, but as you can see its similar but not the same.  The corners are a bit more rounded and it's stamped MADE WITH OAL which is their proprietary aluminum alloy.

I've played with OAL before, in a Kennel Onion designed knife:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,93331.0.html

Other than being slightly different shaped, the Ultra shares the same basic shape and size as the Pro.  They both have three LED's and a three position switch to cycle between them.  The Ultra however has a hexagonal switch, while the Pro's is round.

Both feature clips on the back, and judging by how difficult it was to place them next to each other for these comparison photos, the Ultra also has a magnet on it.

They both have the same USB charging port, and overall they look like pretty well the same light.  The only real difference between the two of them is the Pro features a red LED and the Ultra features a UV light.

The Ultra is charging right now so I don't have the ability to test brightness and other stuff, but I will get around to that shortly.

I don't really have any need for a UV light, but since I was buying another light anyway I figured I might as well try something different.

For the most part the Ultra feels a little more refined, like a newer version of the Pro, which it kind of is.

It also comes in a fancier box- the black box is the Ultra and the white one is the Pro, which I haven't gotten around to tossing out yet, which is quite handy for this photo shoot.   :D

See? Being lazy pays off sometimes....

So far it seems like a nice light- that is, assuming it works as well as the Pro.  The battery came so dead that I couldn't even turn it on, so we will see what it's like once it charges.

I like the color, and i like the form factor.  Provided it works and doesn't burst into flames in my hand, I think it's a good choice for a light.

It cost a few dollars more than the Pro, but it's still not prohibitively expensive.  In the end the Pro vs Ultra debate comes down to whether you need a UV or a red LED.

More to come.

Okay, here is a bit of consumer advice for you, and I want you all to pay close attention.

Get the Pro.

Do not get the Ultra.

Particularly if you or someone in your house is a germaphobe.

UV light is not your friend.

I have just spent a half hour scrubbing my toilet, inside and out.

Consider yourself warned.

Check out the back splash in your kitchen behind the stove and counter area.  The UV will make it look like a crime scene.

My Ultra arrives tomorrow.  :ahhh

I got the Navy blue version, so that when Def and I do our annual 100km run, we will know which light belongs to who.

Great write up. Thanks for taking the time to share. The blue looks really good. I am tempted, but I don’t need the UV light feature.

Yeah, if you don't need a UV light for a specific reason I'd suggest avoiding it at all costs.

Otherwise it is virtually identical to the Pro, and the flood and spots seem similar enough in brightness that I assume they are exactly the same.

If I had to really nitpick between them, I didn't notice much of a difference in the shape of the selector switch.  I do however feel that the texture on the Ultra is a little less slippery (marginally) and the inset logos do add a bit more grip.

If you were going to use it in a wet environment I would opt for the Ultra as it is slightly less likely to be dropped.

That said, they are both equipped with lanyard holes, so if dropping is a significant hazard you can always tie it off, so I don't know how big of a concern that really is overall.

I've never really had a need for a red light, though I understand that they may be good for preserving night vision.  I don't need a UV either, but they do have the "fun" factor.

What's worse than using a UV in your bathroom?  Using a UV in a hotel room.   :ahhh

Yeah I will for sure be leaving it in the car when I stay at hotel rooms in the future!   :ahhh

I already think the portal potties at work are revolting and do my best to touch as little as possible, but it could be interesting/scary to have a look and see her w bad they really are.  They are cleaned weekly....

I used it on my kitchen floor this morning and was extremely disgusted until I realized the stain pattern was regular, meaning it wasn't anything nasty, it's just the pattern on the linoleum.

That was a relief....

Nice write up Grant.

Being a widower, I appreciate the heads up on the UV light.  I think I will leave that one on the shelf.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I picked my Pro version up when discounted on Amazon and I like it, magnet and clip are so useful.

Yet, I will warn you, full beam can lead to trouble;
Late winter, I and a friend took an afternoon hike on a new to us trail around a march area.    We misjudged the distance and time.  I used this torch to light our path o find the correct path to the parking area.
The beam caught the eye of a neighboring farmer who called authorities.
A DNR and County Sheriff both pulled into the area as we approached the car.
They suspected we were poaching, shining for DEER!
Because of our large light.
When I produced the Pro, their expression was WTF!

I demonstrated awl the beams and  levels the one feature they both liked was the Red beam, to preserve night vision when in the field…
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Good to know you could potentially jack deer with this light, should I ever feel the need.

My father lives out in the woods so I told him this story and told him to be careful using it after dark!

I related LoopCutter's story and he said he was not surprised that the conservation officer wanted a word!

At first, I thought the design was unique!

Having used mine in several dark situations, the design is handy, it does not roll away when laid down, it clips to a coat jacket (me zipper ),  the magnet provides another option for freeing up a hand.

Battery life is reasonable, about same as two AAA CELLS in a stick torch.  Only negative is needing cable to charge, but same connector as my iPhone.

Now I am thinking I need a couple more for my bags to compliment the tools assigned.

Signal, Bond, 112 and OLight OH MY!🫣

And, one for travel bag, and another for car, the truck, the night stand….   OLight’s version of the Vic Classic…
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

OLight’s version of the Vic Classic…

I have to agree with you there.  I have had a few OLight products, and while they all do what they are supposed to, I never really got the WOW factor from any of them, but this one is different.  It really stands out and I think this form factor really works, although I still believe that the UV model (Ultra) should be avoided unless you have a specific need for it.

I really think they really nailed something that works.

My father felt it was reminiscent of the old military issue Angle Head Flashlight, and I have to say, I felt much the same way when I first saw it.  So, not only have they hit upon a design that actually works really well, they have also managed to capture a little bit of nostalgia, which is difficult for a modern day LED company.

I learned something interesting today.

The IV mode on this OLight has a practical use for mechanics.

To trace fluid leaks on trucks, cars, or othe modes of transport a dye is used. And the UV light is used to detect the location of said leak.

So, the Ultra is a tool for such purposes if needed in this function.

It will be interesting to see of the Pro grows into the Ultra case. I like the slightly squarer shape and, apparently, the aluminium is better.  I'm just not sure I can justify a use for the UV function.
