I'm really liking fullbreakfast's roll up tool bag.  That seems very convenient to carry in the car vs the larger tool bags I tend to carry when we're heading out of town.

Day 29

The only tool bag I have at the ready is the one with two ropes, some bungee cords, and several ratchet straps.  There was a point in time where I was helping friends move quite often hence this tool bag.  It was just grab and go and I was ready to tie anything down.

My awesome wife bought me this Craftsman tool box several years ago when we finally bought our first house.  It was bought from one of those Sears warehouse stores when they still existed.

The top most lid covers, all assortments of "stuff".  The first drawer houses my screwdrivers.  The second drawers contains all my pliers.  Third drawer contains mostly air tool accessories and my garage calipers.  Fourth drawer contains my wrenches, and the fifth drawer contains my sockets and socket wrenches.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Dan's tackle box is a close cousin to the plier box I showed.  Same sort of thing with the dividers removed.   I don't remember where I got mine.  The little pliers are really easy tools to carry.  I carried mine many times this past month, but not enough outside activity to actually need them.  Looks like the folding military can openers are being appreciated for their size and utility.  I have one but didn't carry it this month.
Lots of high winds today.  I will have to go check for downed trees tomorrow.  It would have been dangerous all the while the winds were whipping.  They died down after dark.  No sense in worrying before I have to.  At least the electricity stayed on.
I have a bag of black-eyed peas and some canned greens for New Year's Day.  The peas are usually cooked with smoked pork jowls.  That I don't have.  Peas are for good luck and the greens represent lots of money for the new year.  I saw that black-eyed peas are fairly expensive this year.  I already had some on hand.  I thought I might buy a box of vanilla wafers.  Then I saw the boxes had shrunk about 30 percent and cost $6.19 for two thirds of a box.  These things were always inexpensive compared to other cookies.  Generally used for making banana pudding.  I don't know how much bananas cost now.  I haven't bought any in some time.  I hope they don't start chopping 30 percent of each banana off.  The little fruit flies would have a party.
Best wishes.  G

Day 26:

Printed a ruler as I was too lazy to go upstairs and grab mine.

Next one will be color-flipped. I did NOT like the bleed-through on this one.

Day 27:

Made a set of calipers as I misplaced my cheap Harbor Freight pair.

It seems to be pretty accurate, but I prefer the two-dollar Pittsburgh one, as the latter is smooth--this one sticks.  Thus, a few of those Pittsburgh ones are slated for next week's Harbor Freight trip.

Day 28:

Finally bought the Member's Mark mini toolbox and as I have been doing with most of my collection of mini toolboxes--it's getting the Gridfinity treatment.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Found a bin just for the two 125mm Knipex pliers--which cost me a fair bit of money tool-wise and I keep losing one or both of them. Thus, they now have a dedicated spot.

The Cobras are almost ten years old and have seen tons of use (bought them right after a buddy of mine showed me his old pair of Alligators), while the Pliers Wrench looks almost new as it's not even a year old.

I have no issues with the size or weight...it's the prices some of them carry that give me pause. The Muskrat is another one I'd like to have, if I'm able to locate one with CS or (better yet) CV blades.
I suppose they were never inexpensive, and some are now downright salty.  Looks you could still have your choice of a new Folding Hunter or Muskrat for about $80, if you aren’t picky about handle material.

Another option is to keep an eye on the ‘bay for a used one.  There’s definitely a sweet spot there for decent users; if condition is too good, collectors will bid up the price, but of course you don’t want something that is beat and sharpened to smurf.

Day 30!  :woohoo:

I have been meaning to show some of my utility knives, so here they are. My favorite is the Stanley 10-049. I don't know if they even make it anymore; I need to get some more blades while they can still be had.

The meter is a Fluke 75 that I've had for a lot of years.

The flashlight is a French-made TL122D. Lots of countries made and used the TL122 besides the US, including England, France and Belgium. I've had a couple of US made ones including at least one plastic one just like this and IIRC one of the green-painted brass ones. Wish I still had that one.

The watch is a Casio SGW100B that I've had for several years. I consider this to be an "almost" G-Shock because it has several features typically found on G_Shocks including a mineral glass lens and 200 Meters water resistance.

Someone asked to see my old Case Trapper. I apologize for not showing it; it's buried somewhere in my safe. Next time I reorganize the safe I'll try to take a pic of it and post it up.

Day 30

This is it.  Pay day.  Line up at the window.  I might as well show a link to the award.  It is on page 5 of the awards in case you want to do it the old-fashioned way.  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=profile;area=requestAwards;a_id=202
I might get a Leatherman or two out tomorrow and see that they aren't getting rusty.  Probably keep carrying an Opinel of some sort or maybe the little Buck trapper.  Tomorrow, I will fish out my Bijou from a drawer and use it to fix my nails just like before.  When it warms up some, I need to walk down my driveway and see if something needs dragged out of the way or sawed up.
It's possible that I might see some of you on another challenge one day.  Until then:  best wishes as always.  Gary  (IMR)

The green pliers are pretty cool! Are they Engineers?

Yep, the ones that are designed to grip a screw head with the plier tips. Works pretty well for getting out stuck screws, mostly of the pan head variety.

Thankfully I wasn't planning on going anywhere today.  I saw a big dead pine tree in my driveway.  Maybe my tree man will help me out.  26F and windy here.  It's going to be a cold job.  Waiting to hear back from him.  I didn't make it past the first 150 yards or so,  Might be more stuff down.  Best wishes.  G

Mini Challenge

So, not exactly a tool bag or tool box, but I’m on the road, so center console of my vehicle is about the best I can do.  Swisschamp, spare Fisher Bullet, and a couple cheap freebie pens…

It’s been an interesting challenge.  I’ve found some handy new tools, but also been reminded why MTs exist.  While they’re absolutely a compromise compared to dedicated tools, sometimes it’s a compromise worth making.

Day 30

I survived!!!

My LM plier tools are just so fidget satisfying. And studying the SAK differences is a source of entertainment.

Not touching either for an entire 30 days was my hardest challenge ever.   Actually hid them away in a spare room, in a safe, with mechanical combo dial and combo code I do not have memorized.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Today I emptied my pouch and will return the contents to their normal assigned spaces.

The two tools I did purchase prior to the month of December was the Black WorkPro pliers, and the Klein Scissors.   Neither saw as much use that I anticipated.

But, I was pleased to have these contents within reach when out and about.

The WorkPro will be assigned into a waist bag for hikes inspecting trails and repairing signs of markers.  Should work a little better on hex nuts.

The lineman scissors will be assigned to my tool bag I shared yesterday.  I had one for years, and it was stolen with my HD tool grip when my work truck was ransacked several years ago.  Was one tool I never got around to replacing 🙄. A MICRA served well in its place.

The remaining awl have pouches or desk cups or drawers to reside.

I will admit, this really was the most DIFFICULT challenge I have participated in at MTo.  Just because of the simple fact that I knew a MT or SAK in my pocket would have been just so damn more easier to pull out and use than going to fetch a dedicated tool.

Have a traditional knife in pocket was nice. Just that a flat blade of Phillips being fetched was…

Gary, again a a hat tip :hatsoff: and a toast  for a challenge very worthy of the effort.

Well done sir!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

My awesome wife bought me this Craftsman tool box several years ago when we finally bought our first house.  It was bought from one of those Sears warehouse stores when they still existed.
That's a nice top chest! :tu: What happened to the Craftsman since Sears tanked is a travesty.

Finally bought the Member's Mark mini toolbox and as I have been doing with most of my collection of mini toolboxes--it's getting the Gridfinity treatment.
Are those grids and holders 3-D printed? Such a setup might be just the ticket for some of my carriers!

Someone asked to see my old Case Trapper. I apologize for not showing it; it's buried somewhere in my safe.
Looking forward to a photo!

It's possible that I might see some of you on another challenge one day.
I'm sure we'll meet in another challenge sooner rather than later. Always a good time!

:iagree: Some extrapolation will follow.

Congratulations to awl who earned the badge, and thanks to ReamerPunch for awarding them! :salute:

As it's the final official day, it's time to give some thoughts on the challenge. It sure is a good thing my needs changed drastically over the course of this year. If I'd needed pliers or a metal file during the course of this challenge, I would have failed miserably. As Nate said, sometimes a multi is a compromise worth making. One such instance is when storing a rolling tool chest involves stairs, rental fees, or selling the tool chest. I have no desire to heave such a thing over stairs or pay storage unit rental fees, so the heavy and bulky storage containers have to go. Though single-function tools have their place, multis make more sense for me right now. This was a fun challenge, though. Job well done to my fellow challengers, and thanks to Gary for hosting! :hatsoff:

Day 30

Here's a shirt pocket screwdriver that I acquired circa 2009. Though it's seen minimal use, the white plastic handle shows its age. Its pocket clip started a vinegar bath shortly before the photo was taken.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

And here's another P-51. It's being shown because its stamp is much crisper than the stamp seen on the P-51 that lives in the kitchen.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

With that, I'll be requesting the badge. Stand by for a little bonus!

This Challenge was actually easier than I expected because of the primary tool that I chose. Carrying the mini Visegrips awlmost felt like cheating because it does so many things so well. In fact I will probably continue to carry it after today, paired with my Swisschamp.

Vice Grips, a fond memory.

Last FEBRUARY travel with friends to MEXICO for Sun, relaxation and good food.

He is a truck driver/farmer, Vice Grips ride on his belt in a belt sheath, 6” size.

Going through TSA preparing to take his belt off, he realized his Vise Grip was on his person.  He pulled out line, mouthed to his wife I will be right back.  She was already through and on the other side.

He disappeared, back into the parking structure, (at Detroit metro TSA is right there at the bridge.)

Twenty minutes late he can be seen in line. A line that is now three times longer when they first arrived.

His wife went to the gate, I waited. After another twenty he is putting his boots, belt, wallet, watch and pocket lint in a tub for scanning.

He waved through the body scanner, I hear the agent asked, “where did you take off too!? Forget something?”

He said, “ I had my vise grips on my belt, ran them back to the Tahoe!”

He looked at him, and said sir, you could have taken them through, may have suggested you put in your carry on to avoid confusion!”

Mike looked so funny, he walks up to me, shaking his head.   “Wife has the keys!!!!   “What did you do?” I asked.

Crawled underneath the truck and jammed up under the radiator shroud, just got to remember to grap em before heading home.

The entire week he worried somebody would find his precious Vise Grips.  His wife and I had a great laugh several times.

And a few weeks ago at our groups Christmas gathering he had them right there on his belt.   By this time everybody knows.   A good guy and turns an ever pleasant shade of pink when reminded.

 Great story!
He could have actually clamped them to something under the Tahoe. I've been known to do that on a Jeep, ATV, motorcycle or whatever.

I awlso have one of those Visegrip/Schrade multi tools. It's a needle nose though, which is not as strong as the standard jaw.

The little feet on this speaker plinth had stuck themselves to the surface underneath. Slightly curved pry bar to the rescue!

Thanks to Gary for this month's challenge. It's been a blast!  And I did several things that I otherwise might not have done, like cleaning up my dad's old hammer and making a needle-and-thread compass, that I am glad to have done.

Sounds like everyone stretched their limits a little and got a different point of view from the challenge.  Like I said, I am not as hardcore multi as some of you are.  A 30 day pizza challenge could possibly have been more fun.  Maybe not.
My tree man came by with a helper and worked two hours until after dark getting the dead tree cleared out of my driveway.  Still some little stuff left.  I will take a rake and police things up a little better tomorrow.  Weather permitting.
Some may remember how I complained and fretted about not getting my electric receipt.  That all worked out.  They overcharged me and gave me some extra credit on this month's bill.  If it wasn't so cold outside, I would run outside picked bird nekked and roll on the ground laughing.
Best wishes.  G

When I got my first apartment the power company made me put down a deposit, plus some kind of extra "untrustworthy 20-something" fee every month.

For my second apartment, I never paid for electric, since I had enough of a credit that it didn't run out for the length of the lease.  :woohoo:

Day 30

Used my Opinel No. 9 for mail call and package duty today.

This was a fun challenge.  It was a gentle reminder of life before I carried a SAK or a multitool.  I used to carry a Kershaw Leek and my Gerber MP600 was in my tool bag with the rest of my tools when I used to work out in the field.  I will definitely continue to rotate out knives here and there and I'll continue to carry the small pliers a little bit longer.  I like that they feel very unobtrusive, yet are more useful than I expected.

Many thanks to Gary for hosting this challenge and see y'awl on another challenge!!

Day 31 bonus

 :woohoo:

Today, after an entire 30 days of being ready, a chance to shine…

The juice bottle was retrieved from the garage fridge and quess what, a tamperproof seal.  :woohoo:

The WorkPro just laying on the counter corner waiting to be added to my car/hike bag.    Nope, it has earned a spot in the awl important kitchen drawer for awl things necessary!

Wow, an entire month waiting to shine, oh so close to missing that chance to shine

As promised, a little bonus...

Day 31

Next month will see me (and a good number of my fellow Toolbox Challengers) in the Blackout Challenge. This Lumintop Nano Frog would work for both. Nate once said that knife manufacturers are more likely that flashlight manufacturers to use bright colors and locating aids like glow-in-the-dark panels. But the Nano Frog does at least have a red LED behind the switch.

Congrats guys, and all the best for this new Solar Cycle
I'm still limping along, but I'll catch up in a few days.

Day 20
This Al Mar folder [I can't recall the model name] was given to me by my dad, another memorable piece, not something I'd ordinarily carry.

I went to the beach, weather was nice.
The pier in this pic is of North Pier, the north side of the Durban Harbour entrance.
My son and I usually snorkel here, the marine life is amazing at this spot

Looking North,we have the Moses Mabidha stadium on the left [built for the 2010 world cup],and Umhlanga Ridge and Umhlanga Rocks [a popular coastal town] in the background, centre [pronounced oom shlang gah, which means "place of reeds" in the Zulu, referring to the reeds along the Ohlanga River which empties into the ocean  nearby]
