20th Anniversary Challenge
on: May 01, 2026, 01:07:45 PM
July will mark the 20th anniversary of Multitool.org.  In keeping with that, I believe holding the Anniversary Challenge again this year would be appropriate.  This particular challenge (also called the Anything Goes Challenge) hadn't been held for 5 years until 2024.  It was my honor to host the revival of that challenge in 2024.  It proved to be popular, so our friend Dan (Farmer X) hosted the Anniversary Challenge in 2025 and did a great job of it.
This is a unique challenge, since there is such a latitude of options within it.  Anything that is part of the site can be used to complete it.  You could carry any SAK, traditional blade, Leatherman, cheap and cheerful, flashlight, pen, watch, or any combination of the above and still be within the rules.
There is a badge for the award.  I received a Anniversary Challenge badge for my first attempt.  For the second, I chose to carry Opinels and requested and received an Opinel badge.  That opens up the choices for someone who already has the original challenge badge.  Always wanted a particular challenge badge, but there hasn't been a challenge for it in a while?  Do it during the anniversary month and get the badge.
Grant has been working with the good people at Victorinox to make a special 20th Anniversary SAK for us.  Details are a little sparse at the time, and Grant has been making some posts to gauge how many are interested.  I expect that to expand greatly as more specifics emerge.
The issue of this special SAK should add even more incentive to join me in this very special 20th Anniversary Challenge.  Challenge starts on July 1, 2026.  More details will follow.
Best wishes,
Gary (IMR)

Hmmm, might be fun to do a "Made in America" challenge/subchallenge since our anniversary aligns with the USA's.

I should point out that the Anniversary Challenge is only available for one month every year.  It has to be during July.  Miss it this time, and there might not be another chance to get the badge since it has only been run now and then in the past.  There was a special one time only badge offered for the 14th Anniversary.  Could the same happen again?  I haven't been working on that goal, but it is a possibility.  I think there were over 30 members for this challenge when I ran it before.  I know it was popular last year.
It is early stages now, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of give-away for the contestants.  Prizes or not, it promises to be a fun time as well as a tribute to the MTO founders and all the members here for making this such a friendly, interesting, generous site.
July is a way off.  Normally I wouldn't start a list so early, but I didn't want this one to slip by.  Might as well start a list and show the badge and official requirements.
Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

I mentioned the 2020 Anniversary Challenge that happened to be the 14th anniversary of MTO.  This is the special badge that was offered for that challenge.  Could there be a special 20th anniversary badge that would be available to all?  There were only 16 members here who got the 14th anniversary badge, and no one else ever will get it.  That is how exclusive this was.  Will I request a special 20th anniversary badge be made for us?  We will see how the sentiment runs as time passes.  Still plenty of time here.

I did notice that most of the member who have signed up already have the regular Anniversary badge.  Remember you still have options to get a badge out of this challenge.  Depending on how you craft your carry.  For example you could apply for the Country of Origin badge (only been offered one time) by carrying knives or multitools from one country.  I don't have a Leatherman badge, so maybe I could try to get one by carrying a L-Man for a month.  Maybe you want something unusual like the Ax badge.  Very seldom is there a separate Ax challenge.  THIS is your opportunity for something like that.  Look through the list and see what you can find.  After all.  Anything goes.
 Best wishes.  Gary

I've found a few that I could choose from, if there's not a special badge for the 20th anniversary. If that does happen and we can haz the 20th even awlready having the regular badge, I'll go for that. Otherwise I'm looking at either my Swisschamp for the SAK STACK, or maybe a fixie (my Condor Nessmuk as a matter of fact) for the Nessmuk badge. I saw a few other interesting ones, but some of them say "start a thread..." which would be a waste because I can do those on any free month.

It is my understanding, that July is the only month a member can actually receive two badges in a single month.

A anniversary badge and a specialty badge.

It is my understanding you contribute to the 30 day topic that is dedicated to the anniversary topic.

And, also, participate in a second challenge topic. Or start your own.

I know we have MEMORIAL TRADITIONAL CHALLENGE NORMALLY in July.

If I am wrong, mods please delete my weak attempt to share my misrepresentation of my understanding.

Of course, I am not the Grand Poobah of Badges, but you can see some of our members have both the 14th Anniversary and the regular Anniversary badge on their rack.  Our friend Kottskrapa is a good example.  I would expect that anyone with the regular badge would also be eligible for the 20th Anniversary badge as well.  A lucky few could have a triple play with all three.  Naturally, this would be the only opportunity to get the 20 year award.
Best wishes.  G

Class, our new pupil is Antti.  Say good morning, Antti.  Take the seat next to the window and open your spelling book to page 43.  Today's story is 'Nan and Alex go to a Creamery'.  Read it and copy down the words from the list on the right.
Gordy, you're late.  Take your seat.  And put out that gum.

Now, if I understand the rules, correctly, I can use this challenge to get a different badge?
I'd like to get a special 20th anniversary badge, if it's different than the regular Anything Goes badge.  I got it back in 24.

If I ignore the thing, entirely,  can I get an Ignore badge.

I think my first choice would be to try for the special 20th Anniversary badge when it is available.  I got my Anniversary badge in 2024 like you did.  Then I carried an Opinel every day in the 2025 Anniversary and applied for (and received) the Opinel badge.

Anything covers a lot of ground, Pit.  I think it is fair to state that the rules allow pretty much anything that is a feature on MTO already.  It would be possible to do 30 days of paracord projects.  There is no 30 day badge for that sort of thing, of course.  You could always still get the 20th Anniversary badge.   It seems we had someone do scout knives on one anniversary challenge.  Some have done the Dean's Traditional Knife event at the same time as the Anniversary challenge and gotten badges for both.  It is a little hard to do two simultaneous challenges and keep it interesting.
I was planning on possibly doing a Leatherman carry for a L-Man badge, since I already have the Anniversary badge.  The possibility of having a special badge becoming a reality made me want to get the 20th Anniversary badge as a primary goal.  I will likely just mix up the things I decide to put on the thread and try to keep it interesting if I can.
I do have another idea or two that I will suggest as time gets closer.  Assuming things go well, which isn't always the case.   You know how intentions sometimes get derailed by unforeseen problems jumping up and biting you on the caboose.
Best wishes.  Gary

Yep,  best laid plans, and all that.
I already have the regular Anything Goes badge, from 24, but would definitely love to see a 20th anniversary badge.
