Whether the burm of the awl acts as the stopper or not (it does seem to on my Pioneer as well), the fact is, the awl on the Pioneer, and I believe all similar sized Alox models by extension, performs far better as a punch than any other multitool awl that I have personally tested.  And I have tested multiple Swiss army knives and Leathermans.  Sewing for repairs of canvas or leather, on the other hand, well, it is missi g the eyelet

I love it too, always very useful to have a pokey

Possible, but unlikely.  Ed is a well known and respected knifemaker who has been supplying designs to Spyderco for years.  He doesn't really seem like the attention hound type.
