I just received this minichamp with gray scales. It has shields on both sides and no pen; it has a toothpick and tweezers instead.

Then this one just came in from Poland. Thanks ALM!

Usually two shields means one thing--someone took an advertising knife, which often has the advertising, sometimes inlaid in metal like the Swiss Cross, on the front scale, and the Swiss Cross on the back (with toothpick on the cross side, tweezers on the advertising side), and replaced that front scale with a normal scale.   Still a great looking knife--be on the lookout for the oddest of all, advertising knives with the sideways Swiss Cross.  Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there's ever been an SAK that came from the factory like that with two Swiss Crosses, one on each scale, unless it was a mistake or something.

I like that mod!  Wenger's layer with wrench and Phillips has far more use to me than the magnifier on Victorinox's.

I like that mod!  Wenger's layer with wrench and Phillips has far more use to me than the magnifier on Victorinox's.

I'm wondering if the tang/hole on Wenger IL phillips is better for installing into an 84mm Vic than the 91mm Vic IL phillips. I don't like that the Wenger phillips is so short, but on a smaller knife of course that's needed.

Prices on Wengers or Delemont Vic with the IL phillips are high enough that I feel strange using them as donors. Seems like the Phillips/wrench layer is mostly found on the more deluxe knives.

I wish there was a layer with IL phillips and fine IL phillips. (not sure what #, just the larger from Explorer, etc and smaller from Outrider or like on the Minichamp.)

I've been messing with it here but have found that the fine phillips off a 111mm Vic works best with a 91mm blade layer spring, but not so well replacing the mag-glass/LED module on the phillips/mag spring.
it points in a crooked direction when open and snap is loose.  I think having the 2 sizes of phillips would be the most useful for me above wrench or mag glass.

I take apart a lot of electronics and rarely encounter nuts but always have to contend with small phillips screws deep down in holes. The 111mm smaller phillips is nice and long, whereas Cybertool or 58mm small phillips is too bulky to fit down into those holes.

I've been staring at this Sportsman thinking "I need IL phillips and scissors on this"  Was considering both openers across from Wenger IL phillips. Not sure what to do about springs though, or sourcing a Wenger phillips.

These arrived today--OC Pioneer and Solo.

I was cruising eBay late last Friday night when these popped up at $15 and $10, respectively. I couldn't hit "Buy it Now" fast enough.

Got another 84mm Salesmen in the mail today - love these little guys.

(Image removed from quote.)

Love to see those pop up.....starring at one of those right now, little newer, squared Phillips but no file, can-key instead.  Congrats....

My Tinker Small is like that, no file on phillips but it has the can key slot, metal tweezer head. Is that...70s?

JJ....I believe that is the 70's.....That's what I put mine at....haven't tried the can key yet.......

I have washed it with a toothbrush, took compressed air to it, oiled and sharpened it  Looks like new almost again :dd: The pic was pre-cleaning though

This pic is a top view of it next to my Champion :tu:

Awesome Ponch!!!! I got one in just like it today!!!!  The "Camping" Ranger is my most often bought SAK lately.

Be careful buddy...that's close to the perfect field SAK. It might kick a bunch of other SAKs outta your pocket. 5 layers of usefulness.

I received my Caftsman today.  It was totally seized and required assistance from another SAK to open the tools. But after cleaning and oil, I see this is in much better shape than most I've bought used.  Very happy with the $20 price. Blade needs to be sharpened but hasn't been sharpened that I can tell. Otherwise no chips on the tools and I gotta say....I'm really liking this Craftsman...really good compromise between Champ-level tool set and Deluxe Tinker or Explorer "wieldability". It doesn't feel too thick, but has most of the stuff from the Champ. You can see it between Champ and Deluxe tinker in the second pic.

One thing I didn't clean up was some kind of "water drop stain" discoloration on the edges of the liners, seen between the springs. An oiled pipe cleaner and toothbrush didn't take care of it. I didn't wanna sand them with 1000 grit paper, since that would dull the springs a bit, so this will have to wait for a buffing wheel or something to really get those liners clean.

This one has a pin hole on the scale but no pen slot, has hook and older style metal file. Guessing early 2000's maybe.  I've read that this model used to have a fish scaler instead of pliers, and at one point was basically equivalent to the Champion b (says the wiki). But this current configuration of tools is what works for me. Troubleshooter is cool too, but If I'm already past 4 layer size, might as well get the WS too.

This was supposed to be a surprise gift for a friend, I was gonna install a set of them yellow Gadsden scales with that snake who don't want you to tread on'im. (my friend likes that design)
But now he's just gonna get a Deluxe Tinker with that sneaky snake on it... and this Craftsman is going into EDC rotation for sure.

Nice one.  You got the inlaid "camping" scales too, rather than the screened one.

The Ranger is a fantastic model, especially when you realize how tool-dense it is.  I has only one more thin layer, but 5 more tools than a Huntsman!
