My New Pulse
on: June 10, 2011, 12:25:26 AM
Long time members may remember the last time I posted about my "New" Pulse, which didn't turn out so well.  Frankly I was so disappointed in that incident I didn't really want to get another.  Every time I thought about getting a Pulse I thought about the one I had (and still have) and just didn't go through with it.  Then recently our good buddy DaveK liquidated his collection, and I needed to replace a recently traded Flair, so I contacted him.  While discussing details for the Flair we managed to also work out a way to add in a Pulse, and perhaps the Patented Defender Pulse Curse was finally over.

Here are the Pulses- the differences may not be immediately obvious, so let's look a little closer!

I once described the blade as looking like someone sharpened it by hanging out a car door and dragging it on the street at 30mph.  It looks even worse when compared to the virtually brand new blade on the new Pulse I got from Dave.

Aside from it being ground to s**t, the blade is also not straight, and here's why- the lock is broken.  The mechanism is fine, but the corner of the sheet metal that locks into the blade is long gone.

In addition to that, the small screwdriver is snapped off.  Apparently the previous owner had a hell of a tough set of eyeglasses to snap it off like that.  Again, a comparison shot with the the new one shows how bad it is.

It's not all bad though- the previous owner saw that things were broken off and decided to add some metal by dribbling some welding slag on the pivots.  ::)

In short, I now have a beautiful, shiny new Pulse, so I can now appreciate the Pulse for what it is.  Thanks to DaveK for a great deal.

talk about a pulseless pulse.

Mine also had a broken driver from the seller, but they took pics.

I cleaned it up and diamond filed a new blade onto it.

For the record, back when I got that trashed one, my contact at Leatherman had read the thread and offered to replace it under warranty.  I greatly appreciated the offer, but felt that it wasn't fair to Leatherman to do that, and I wanted to keep it as a reminder that some eBay sellers are not worth having faith in.  There were only closed pics, and the description looked good, plus the seller had lots of feedback, most of which was good.  The bad feedback I left was buried pretty quickly by other buyers, so I can't imagine they really gave a damn about it.

But, thanks to Leatherman for offering to look after me even though it wasn't their problem, I wasn't the original owner and this one was definitely the victim of a significant amount of abuse.

ok this is just a random thought and I don't mean to sound insensitive or anything but looking at your broken Pulse again doesn't that make it a UK legal Pulse now? Hmmm.
You have the right tool... but do you know how to use it the right way?

How in God's name can you break the lock tab on a pulse without snapping the blade off?!

That first pulse is a crying shame.  I love my pulse so much, I would hate to see it in that kind of condition.

Def you are a standup guy for not sending that in to LM under warranty.  It's people like you that keep the warranty in place.  Glad to see that karma bit you in a good way and got you a pulse you can appreciate.  It truly is one of the best tools ever, and IMO THE best.

Thanks- I try not to abuse things like warranty's, but in this case it was more of a personal lesson.  I took the seller's word that it was in good condition and the crappy photos (no photos of the internal components) didn't show any problems.  So, I got burned, I learned my lesson- don't trust eBay sellers until/unless I know them.

In the seller's defense, he did offer to take the tool back, but as I'd already paid to have it sent to me, I wasn't about to foot the bill to send it back to him.  It was cheaper if I just kept it.
