*NEW* Skipper, Sidelock Outrider, Hercules

Wow!  I've been annoyed with Greg for tricking me into getting this new Skipper, but I have calmed down now.

This knife has excited me far more than I expected. I'm surprised to be so jazzed up by a new SAK--not that every new SAK isn't fun and exciting in some way. But this is a bit different. This is sort of a case of "love at first grasp."

This knife feels great in hand. I have big hands, but the Hercules feels....just a touch large. I know that I'll carry and use the Hercules, but it will always feel a touch big. The Skipper feels perfect. The Outrider is a bit slimmer and feels good too, but the Skipper feels 'Goldilocks right' for me.

I love the toolset.

Part of me is asking, "wait...where are the scissors?" and "don't you think a woodsaw might be handy?"

Nevermind those lingering doubts. The Marlin spike/shackle wrench makes up for those missing tools. This knife is a dream for those of us who like to work with rope and fishing line. Between the pliers, marlinspike, corkscrew, awl, toothpick, and tweezers, this knife has a full arsenal of knot tying/untying tools.

I've long been an Outrider fan. It too has a brilliant tool set and can go for a hike on its own. I think the Skipper will need to be paired with another SAK (Classic or Ambassador) so that I can have some scissors and a small plain edge blade as well.

Which brings me to my gripes.......

I'm not a fan of a serrated blade. I really like being able to simple strop a knife back to razor edge. I like the ease of sharpening a plain edge. I like the control and precision of a plain edge. I do understand that the serrated edge might be useful for quickly cutting a line, a quality that seems especially useful in a maritime environment. And I bet that on a cruise or picnic the SE blade would be great for food prep. But I'd rather have a plain blade. Just me.

My other gripe is that the awl has no eyelet. Why?     Why does Vic make two different awls, one with and one without an eye?  Makes no sense.   And an eye could be very useful for sail repair (given the purpose of this knife). So....why?

While I've awl-ways liked a sewing eye in my awls, I don't remember a specific time when I really needed a sewing awl. And....I can stow a sailmaker's needle underneath the in-line Phillips driver.....

An interesting side note: the paracord lanyard pictured cam with the knife. The box looked like it has been sealed at the factory. I guess DLT specified the lanyard along with scales. Nice touch DLT!  :tu:

(I'll likely replace that lanyard with another option, but I thought it was nice of them to include it.)

So, first impressions: I don't want to put this knife down!  I can easily see this becoming an EDC knife for me. In fact.....look for more photos in the upcoming EDC in DEC challenge....  :D

That looks like we'll have a lot of fun. Outrider, Skipper, Workchamp, those are all titans of the 111 mm line. And with a lot of fine people on that challenge we'll bring some light into the darkness of winter.

I have a few 111mm’s, which are stowed all around the show as backups/just-in-case/mobile tool boxes. They are a bit big and heavy to carry on person, but since I’ll be working from home in Jan I can give them all a test drive.  :salute:

My Outrider from McStitchy arrived today.

It is lighter than I was expecting, especially for the size.  This challenge should be interesting.

I'm out
Between the Minimal Challenge, and limits in my life with added responsibility, I've come to terms with the fact that I don't need a Skipper beyond the Challenge
On the bright side I was able to cancel it, and I'm exploring the 58mm line

Sorry that you are out, Greg!   :salute:

Sounds like you are making some practical choices, though. Maybe some day I'll achieve that level of wisdom.....or Mrs Nix will hide my wallet.....

Add: Check out the Rambler, a great little 58mm. And don't over look the slightly larger but very sweet Vic Executive 81, aka 'Wenger'. At 65mm it is small, but a lot more knife!  :tu:

Shame on you, Nix and Greg. You tricked me into a Skipper - it arrived today  Btw, Skippers always come with lanyards (cf. Sakwiki).

Thanks for the invite, Nix, but these Covid-challenges tend to be too crowded for my liking. This is why I already skipped the minimal challenge. But if there are less than 20 participants by 1 January I will join.

My Skipper Pro came with a section of orange paracord for use as a lanyard.

I’ve been trying to decide if I want to upgrade from my old version Hercules to the new liner lock version??

For around the house, the slide lock version is fine. Mine sets by my bedside upstairs, so I have a decent multi tool up there in case I need a quick reach tool.

But if I was going to actually carry the Hercules everyday, I think I’d prefer the liner lock version. Mainly for the beefier, locking flat head/bottle opener driver. I use the beefier ones in my 93mm saks as pry bars a lot.

Personally, replacing the wood saw with the metal saw/file on the newer Hercules would be about the perfect SAK for me. Also, replace the can opener with an inline awl from the 93mm line!!

You make a good point zrxoa1, the inline awl is noticeably absent from the entire 111mm range   :-[

I wish that SOS tool were available commercially. I'd gobble one up.  :tu:
