Re: Leatherman Bond Owners Club TSA stop
Reply #630 on: March 29, 2022, 04:26:07 AM
TSA took exception to my blade less Rebar.  Sure I could have argued it, but it was the end of a long trip and ready to get on the airplane and get home.  I have two Bond's, so I am thinking about modifying one of them to be TSA legal.. Although  It has a smaller tool selection, but will fit my traveling needs.  I have a couple of ideas as to modifying it and would like some suggestions.  The first is to just dremel off the knife blade or take it apart and replace the blade with a pair of scissors.  My first question is will a pair of scissors fit in that slot?  If that is possible which tool could I utilize the scissors from?

My automatic answer is to use the scissors from the Blast/Wave/Charge/Curl (it's the same scissors for all of them). The problem is that their opening tab is on the wrong side for mounting in the blade position, meaning that the tab would hit the frame and prevent the scissors from folding in all the way. There are two solutions that I can see to this issue:

1. Move the file to the blade position and install the scissors in the file's slot.

2. Use a Dremel or other tool to enlarge the blade access cutout in the frame to accommodate the scissor tab.

I personally would go with the first option, since it avoids physically altering the handle.

Do you have a set of the special wrenches for the anti-tamper screws? If not, you'll have a hard time disassembling the Bond.

Has anyone tried smoothing out the handles so they don't "bite" as much? I'm not a machinist but the bond has the same handle feel like the rebar. The file is a part of it but I wonder if the handles are too sharp or they are just so thin it doesn't matter. :dunno:

I haven't used mine a lot but haven't noticed  I haven't really paid attention that my Rebars are like that either,  so I may not be the best to answer  :D

So I finally got the saw installed and I must say this could be a viable option for Leatherman to introduce! Especially for those that carry a dedicated knife.

How do people rate this? Been on and off of picking one up (want the pocket clip for it) some posts I’ve seen say it’s very sharp in the hand with the handles open and the blade flops out

I believe the blade thing has been fixed, mine is old stock and it doesn't bother me. I don't think it's a practical safety issue, more nitpicking and internet controversy.

Doesn't feel sharp IMO, but edges of the frame are easily knocked down if it's not to your liking. I strongly recommend the clip for it though.

I would vote for getting one Chippy  And I agree with GF about the sharps and controversy about it :tu: Totally should come factory with a pocket clip IMO but it is what it is :-\ it makes it a much more pocketable tool with the clip :woohoo:

Wow, Demel! Great mod! DIY?  :like:

Interesting read, posting to this discussion, so I will be subscribed.

I have multiple MTs, favoring the REBAR, for majority of my needs.  A super tool 300 for heavy duty use, and my BOND does travel via checked luggage..

My need to search for the pocket clip should begin.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Those buying a clips should be careful to get the one for the Bond! There is a separate clip for the K series that ships with screws that are too long for the Bond

 thanks. Yes, I bought a saw from ebay (from a rebar) and swapped out the knife to make a knifelesss Bond. I considered buying the knifeless rebar to have a comparison but with the added clip the bond is a winner. Very easy to do.
