Victorinox box cutter - new tool!
on: June 10, 2021, 10:02:29 AM
Victorinox is developing a new, COVID pandemic-inspired tool: a box cutter that may replace the can opener on certain models. No further details yet, but it sounds interesting!

Interview in German and French

Mr. Elsener also talks about the financial situation of the company. No profit in 2020 but Q1 of 2021 was better than last year.

Thanks guys :hatsoff:

@ReamerPunch the pictures are not extremely interesting. No photos of that new tool. Some photos of that new Victorinox warehouse I posted a video of a while back (I know one of the people responsible for the mega intelligent "shuttle" system they use).

Perhaps I should reserve judgement until we at least have pictures, but a dedicated box cutter on a SAK that already has one or two knife blades seems redundant and silly, and not very well thought out for a company that historically takes a very conservative approach to introducing new tools.

A replaceable blade would be interesting...

They specified covid, which has absolutely nothing to do with a box cutter unless it also doubles as a no touch tool?

He was referring to the increase in online shopping. More boxes, more unboxings :)

They could do something like the Felix Immler sharp hook mod on the can opener.

The orange peeler on the Executive is a VERY good box slicer. (that is, along the tape). Used it for that today.  :salute:

And, the can opener is a Philips driver. Why get rid of that? Sounds dumb and gimmicky. I hope it doesn't ruin many models, or they at least come both ways.

This is my problem. The pruner blade is very versatile. It can open packages, quickly annihilate clam pack and cardboard, and is very effective on plastic strapping. Plus, it's good for pruning and harvesting (duh!); as well as cutting and stripping wire.  However, it is usually only found on some Alox models; but is RARELY offered in 91mm form as the secondary blade (replacing pen blade) on a small handful; some Camping-shield models done nearly 50 years ago, and a limited edition sold only through Smoky Mountain Knife Works ca. 2005-6 (Master Gardener) in small numbers. The 58mm pill band cutter (orange peeler) is great at package opening duty as well. So, we have two tools that work great for this job.  And, if dropped from Alox, or certain smaller 84/91mm models w/corkscrew (or nothing, like the Recruit), you'll lose Phillips ability.

I'm hoping to see a mini strap cutter, as used on some smaller Ruikes; and the Ruike-made Boker Mini Tech Tool. Like the Ruike (but in shortened form without the bottle opener), possibly with an SD tip to make up for the missing can opener. I hated the scissors on the Ruike, but loved the cutter and blade.

Ooo I like that...wonder if one of those would go in a 91mm?
