I'm in starting April, (for a full month's carry) IF the Mini Champ is elelagable. I'll be carrying it anyway, so why not? 😷👍

kamakiri - Day 16

Changed to a 1963 Champion B for Day 16.  Just conquering the mail so far.

This one is 1963 because it’s missing all the changes that start showing up in the ‘63-‘65 range. Almost every single tool goes through some sort of easily identifiable change through this period. Changes against the earlier ‘61-‘62 knives requires a bit more finesse in analyzing what I’m now calling progression type details. It also compares very well to other knives that can be precisely pegged to 1963 with inlaid and engraved dates.

Day of Challenge / Knife used:
1. Original Black 1984
2. Champion Plus c. ‘09
3. 1974 Red w/o Nickel Silver Shield
4. 1967 Hoffritz Champion B
5. 1983 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife
6. 1965 Hoffritz Champion B
7. 1986 Champion C
8. 1978 Champion C
9. 1989 Champion C
10. 1978 Hoffritz - Stainless inlay
11. 1980 A&F black Champion 1 of 3
12. 1969 146fmaU Champion B
13. 146fmaU Champion B - TGS inlay
14. 1989 Champion C - Credit Suisse inlay
15. mid-‘50s 146fmaU Champion B
16. 1963 146fmaU Champion B

I like my post '91 Champion, but I do envy you those bailers. :hatsoff:
I’m not a fan of having a bail on a knife I’m actually using, but the bail and exposed pins add a nice aesthetic to those vintage SAKs.

 :iagree: :iagree:

On both points. In use, it only gets in the way for me. Gotta flip it back n forth depending on the tools you’re using. And lots of the ones I have show very clear signs of a previous owner closing the main blade on them! I love the way they look, but don’t ever wish they’d come back for regular production.

DAY 16  I tried the hsherzfeld method of coming the longer part of my beard.  I can't say it did a good job, but I didn't rip my lips off.  That concludes my testing.  Selfies while waving a saw near my face would probably go viral, but I tapped out and took one of the Champ with a more appropriate saw target.

I wasn’t recommending using the saw as a comb. I only said that it’s possible.

Made home made tomato soup tonight. Had to open a carton of veggie stock. I hate that they don't have air holes to help the flow, but that was easily rectified by the awl. Also opened a can of tomatoes. The wife just bought a fancy new can opener, but gotta stay in practice with the SAK just in case...

Hello, afishhunter!

The Challenge of Champions is just for the month of March. We started back on the 1st and end on the 30th. It's open to the Champion and Champion Plus models.

There was a challenge for 58mm SAKs last year so you might keep an eye open for another one.

kamakiri - Day 17

Happy St. Paddy’s Day! Changed to a 1973 Hoffritz Champion B for Day 17.  No uses so far. Pictured with some of my favorite greenies for today.

Today’s Hoffritz Champion B sports the rare first ruler on the s.caler as shown in the close up. This one is likely produced just before, if not parallel to the first Champion Cs. The main line knives with these rulers appear to be just a tick earlier in production.

Day of Challenge / Knife used:
1. Original Black 1984
2. Champion Plus c. ‘09
3. 1974 Red w/o Nickel Silver Shield
4. 1967 Hoffritz Champion B
5. 1983 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife
6. 1965 Hoffritz Champion B
7. 1986 Champion C
8. 1978 Champion C
9. 1989 Champion C
10. 1978 Hoffritz - Stainless inlay
11. 1980 A&F black Champion 1 of 3
12. 1969 146fmaU Champion B
13. 146fmaU Champion B - TGS inlay
14. 1989 Champion C - Credit Suisse inlay
15. mid-‘50s 146fmaU Champion B
16. 1963 146fmaU Champion B
17. 1973 Hoffritz 146fmaU Champion B w/ 1st Ruler

A lovely green bunch! I didn't carry a green SAK today, but I did decide against removing the green lanyard.

Day 17

I read that some people like to sharpen their tweezers down to a point, so I used the metal file and one of my spare pairs. I haven't needed the tweezers yet this month (surprisingly) so we'll see if/when it pays off.

I've been meaning to try that. Luckily I have a few sets of tweezers that could go, and ample replacements.

Day 17, Supplemental
I used the metal saw again at robotics last night. We needed to remove a locking collar (similar to that shown below) from a hex shaft, but the head of the set screw that tightens the collar was stripped, so we couldn’t loosen the collar to remove it.

Luckily, the collar was aluminum, so I sawed through it until it was weakened enough to pound off with a “universal problem solver”.

DAY 18  I brushed my hand against some plant and had very small, thin needles in the side of my hand.  Tweezers and using the blade as a scraper got them all out (I think), but sharpening the tweezers to a point would be better.  No pic of thorn removal due to lack of sufficient hands or an assistant.

Thanks Alan K., I just had to do something at least a bit different!  Also giving me a reason excuse to dig around in my collection a bit…maybe get some ideas for reorganization. Can’t find this ‘58 I was comparing to just before the challenge started…looked for it on at least 3 separate days and no luck so far. I figure that’s better than doing something like pulling out a couple other ‘74s…or the other two A&F…or many more of the misc Hoffritz Super Knives from ‘75 to ‘91…I really should’ve planned better! Lol. There are better candidates…if I can find them in time!!
