Today's update:

The ByrdRench is the budget version of Spyderco's sought after SpydeRench and is produced in China to keep the costs more reasonable.

The original SpydeRench was made in Golden, Colorado, and discontinued soon after launch due to manufacturing issues. A second generation SpydeRench, made in Taiwan was released around the same time as the ByrdWrench.

As you can see from the (many!) photos, the ByrdRench is a highly complex tool with a relatively small amount of functions compared to other tools in its size and price range, however, collectors love them because there is simply nothing else on the market like them!

And yesterday's that I didn't post here because of connectivity issues...

When it comes to tools that are high on the fidget scale while also being useful, the SwitchPlier 2.0 from SOG should come to mind.

This is the updated version of the original SOG SwitchPlier, and both feature a number of actually useful functions in a relatively ergonomic shape.

Find out all you want to know about the SwitchPlier 2.0 with the Multitool Encyclopedia!  https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=SwitchPlier+2.0

One of the most iconic multiools for collectors and enthusiasts is the Pulse from Leatherman.

Produced between 2000 and 2004, the Pulse was one of only two models to feature the rolling lock system- the other being the SuperTool 200.

The Pulse also had the same scissors and diamond coated file as the PST II among its array of functions, and remains popular with collectors to this day.

The toolset was exactly the same (design differences as noted above) except for the combo blade on the PST II and the Pulse had a plain edge blade, meaning I much prefer the Pulses toolset over the factory PST II  :D

Yesterday's post:

Once again the Swiss Army Knights were ahead of the curve, commissioning this SOSAK Knife Of The Year for 2009 and having a Victorinox shield (part of the old SOSAK logo!) on a Wenger knife!

This model, the RangerGrip 78 was the second Wenger model we had done and the sixth knife we did for that program.

What do you think?  Should we do it again?  See the rest of the SOSAK Knives Of The Year at SAKWiki.com!  https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=SOSAK+Annual+Knife+Series

And another forum shoutout today!

When it comes to needing a rescue tool, you really don't want something flimsy or fiddly- as Toronto firefighter, knife designer and fellow Canadian James McGowan can attest.  That's likely why he designed this combo of MAK-1 and Xtrik-8-R, which was produced by the fine folks at CRKT.

When it comes to simplicity of use and sheer toughness it is hard to come up with a tool to beat these while still being convenient enough to wear on your rescue gear and barely notice they are there.

Did you know we have a whole subforum dedicated to rescue tools like the MAK-1 and Xtrik-8-R, and the people who use them?  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?board=35.0

Wenger's answer to the Victorinox Waiter was the Entree, pictured here with the standard scales, followed by the EVO 63 with Wenger's Evolution scales.

With a main blade, cork screw and combo tool which integrates a screwdriver, can opener and bottle opener, the Entree is well equipped for most problems in an extremely small, pocketable 85mm frame.

I don't know about you, but I can't even think of the Sidekick without thinking of the awful series of ads Leatherman made for its sister tool, the Wingman.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, consider yourself lucky!

Originally designed to be more budget friendly than many of their more premium tools, the Sidekick was initially sold with a small carabiner tool and suede pouch at a ten dollar premium over the Wingman- and the carabiner tool was well worth it.

I didn't much care for them, although I did prefer the Wingman because I prefer scissors for EDC.  I will say, my opinion of both of them increased significantly when I saw the Rev.

What LM should have done, IMHO, if they wanted to create a simple, inexpensive tool, would be to update the PST/PST II rather than putting effort into a fancy looking design with stubby tools.

But hey, what do I know?  I'll bet the designers and marketers at Leatherman all drive nicer cars than me.... I know they at least all wear prettier bracelets...

As far as I'm concerned, FB, Instagram, Twitter etc are all just ways to advertise MTO.  People get a little taste there and if they are interested, they come here for the full meal deal.

Sadly the marketersbfor the big companies nowadays don't pay attention to you if you don't have a social media presence, even if you are the best forum on the whole damned internet.   :tu:

When buying a multitool, make sure you do your research and, whenever possible, purchase one from a reputable source- not some big, online auction company and a seller in parts unknown!

This copy of the excellent Gerber MP600 DET may look legit in the photos (despite missing the Gerber logo!) but it is actually a very poor execution, made from (in guessing) very cheap materials, culminating in the $14 price tag.

Learn more about the MP600 (you'll be glad you did!) at the Multitool.org Encyclopedia:  https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Multi-Plier+600

Without a doubt, this Swiss Clipper from Wenger is my most carried and used Swiss Army Knife- its rarely beyond my reach, and when it is, I generally wish it wasn't!

This was one of the first models from Wenger's restructuring after the Elsener family purchased the Wenger brand, and I dismissed it as being a pointless, overly bulky keychain tool- and was I ever wrong!

It quickly became one of my most valued tools- check out SAKWiki.com for all the info on the Swiss Clipper and more! https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Swiss+Clipper

Speaking of tools I thought were silly at first, but was mistaken about, here is the new SOG Pop Grip attached to my trusty Otterbox Defender.

It does all the same stuff those cutesy poo pop socket things do, but inside is a handy one piece tool- and I've always said that the best tool is the one you have with you.

As long as you have your phone, you'll have a can and bottle opener, bit driver, pry bar and screwdriver when you need them.
