DAY 21

I really love this little knife...

Thought I would revisit the Coolhand knife from day 17, it was one of the cheaper D2 blades back when 8cr Chinese steel first started becoming popular.

Up until then it was mainly O1, mystery carbon steel, 420 and 440 steel in my line up, although bought for my dad, I ended up using it...a revelation a blade that actually kept an edge...and started me down the super steel (slippery) slope...

The blade shape was originally similar to the Benchmade Osborne, but the spine was ground to my tastes

And a final picture to show the handle

DAY 23

MUT love Sunday, I have two of these as that feel so good in my hand, and that hammer/cutter combo works so well. I don't have the rifle it was made for as live in UK.

The ratchet is my latest mod for the bit driver, and works well.

The #8 blade is my fave Opi size so I’m ok with that, they do make an outdoor #10 (forgotten its name) so maybe that’d suit you better and I agree better as an outdoor knife, this is more a picnic knife in my mind

…I like the handle material on this

I have the No. 12 Explore as well.  The blade is better than the No. 08 Outdoor IMO, but not the full No. 12 size.  (I’ll try to post a comparison pic later.)

The handle on the No. 12 Explore is an abomination though, riddled with useless “features” that make the handle larger than it needs to be while not leaving enough room for my hand.

I like the handle material too, but I think handle design could be better.

The blade on the No. 12 Explore is actually a No. 10 blade size.  I like the feel of the handle on the No. 12.  I like how the No. 8 carries but if I had to pick a personal favorite size, it's the No. 9.

I always thought that a whistle is a silly addition to a hiking kit until I learned that the sound of a whistle carries a longer distance than a shout.
Not only does it carry further, but how long do you think you could shout for help before losing your voice?

In contrast, as long as you have breath and are conscious, you can continue blowing your whistle.

A whistle is a smart addition to a hiking kit, but not a great addition to a knife handle IMO.

No. 10 (Goldilocks Opi IMO)

No. 08 Outdoor

So far the Vic Soldier, Delica and Skeletool/Freestyle are my winners in term of effective low effort cutting using the combo edge. Definitely want to use caution as man would they bite you if you weren't paying attention.

  P!

I had really high hopes for the No. 12 Explore when I ordered it, but it ended up being something of a disappointment.

The blade is good, but the handle is kind of a mess because of all the extra crap they put in it.  It manages to be quite large overall, while not leaving enough room for my hand.  Mine in the pic is missing the cutting hook/lanyard attachment and tick remover, because I took them out to try to make the handle more comfortable.  Also, it ends up being quite heavy for its size.

Day 23 Spa Day!

Today was spa day for the 551SBK. I completely tore it down and cleaned each component.

Before reassembling the knife I inspected each part to make sure everything was in good condition and there was no rust or worn parts. I replaced all the scale screws and pivot with titanium parts. I also replaced the plastic scales with some G10 scales with standoffs since I prefer open back construction for easier cleaning.

Hope you all had a great weekend.

I could never figure that out Nate.  I have an honest to goodness No. 12, and that blade would be great for outdoors.  I have an early version of the 12 with the cutting hook.  It's not bad, but I could definitely do without the hardware in the handle too!  Thanks for posting that comparison pic!

Day 24

I decided to switch back to the Gerber for a while.  The Wingman was making my pants sag on one side.  The Gerber is lots lighter.  I put the annoying pocket clip back on when I shelved it.  Why go to the trouble of taking it off again?  I read in some of the whiny little posts on some other knife site about the locks failing under pressure.  This one doesn't seem to have that tendency.  I gave it a good stout nudge and it stayed locked up.  Best wishes.  G
