Lets take it apart and bring it back to life. I haven't much luck with reusing the old scales though. Does it come with a shackle?
If this was in response to my knife-box picture, you may have missunderstood.  The knife that came with it is in beautiful condition, as if it came off the assembly line yesterday.  It's a truly wonderful knife, there is nothing like the knives produced at this time.

Looks exactly like the one that ended last week on the bay for $361.  :o
So yes that's one expensive piece of cardboard for sure.
Although the knife looked quite nice in the photo.
Was it a vintage Spartan ?
I could not believe the boxed Huntsman went for $510.
So glad I don't collect those.
It does have a striking simularity doesn't it?  Yes the knife is quite nice.
It was what we would call a Standard/Spartan configuration today, but as shown in this 50s era catalog it appears Vic and/or importer did refer to it as a "Camper"; maybe because of the shackle. This helps confirm some of the strange names in that catalog.

Seeing the condition of this one I should have tried for the other one as well, but I was really concentrating on the box since I have other knives from this time. I hope the other owner posts here the details on the box and knife.

I've got this mammoth-scaled Victorinox Executive on the way from felinevet:

I love having gear with a good story behind it. The idea that this ivory is over 100,000 years old is just such a story.

By the way, if you're curious about wooly mammoths, Wikipedia's page on it is a great read.

This is a great place for mammoth ivory lovers. I really like the larger beads for lanyards.

A Champion. I got this in a batch of 15 knives for $30. I had to replace the broken off saw blade. I think the scales were more than the knife. This is my oldest knife now. Anybody have a better date than mid 60's?

You say you replaced the original saw, which is one of the main dating features. Did the original saw have symmetric or asymmetric teeth? Symetric = mid-late 60s (65-68), asymetric = early-mid 60s (63-65). Polished asymmetric = early 60s (62/63).

That's a great lookin' Champion.  Did you do the peaning to on that?  The shackle looks good.  Did you replace the scales as well?  If so did you drill a set of current scales or find and old set to use?

I need to cross post this wonderful Mod by bushidomosquito I got yesterday.

Cheated and drilled a new set of scales. I have never seen the old style new anywhere. I have no luck saving the old style either. This had a big "WESBTER" ground in the side. They were not going back on.

I put the brass bushings in the new style. I am thinking the old style
are solid and new is hollow there. After time the new style would
loosen up with use. Hopefully the brass will slow the wear down or not
let the shackle collapse in.

Not new but I haven't seen this one in a while, I found my pioneer that Sawman gave me a while back.  The blade had gotten dinged when a careless coworker tried to pry a door with it.  I guess I tossed it in a BOB that I was building and forgot about it.  Now I can't find the replacement he gave me either.  I am bad about putting SAK's in bags and forgetting they are there.

I reworked the edge and was able to get it cracking sharp again so it's in my pocket as a user and a reminder not to lend my sh*t to anyone.

Suspense!!!

This Vic Soldier knife, new in package, is from a recent eBay auction. It was really just an impulse bid that I placed, not really thinking that I would win. But, I needed a fix! Anyway, it arrived today and now I find myself on the horns of the proverbial dilemma. Do I open it or do I just stash it in a drawer and forget about it? I have quite a few Soldier knives and rarely carry any of them. What's really killing me with this new knife is the suspense of not knowing what year is etched on it's main blade.

I need some advice!

Should I yield to my curiosity and open it? Or, should I just forget about what year it was made and put the unopened package away somewhere?

The suspense is killing me!!!

As a post script: I will add that I have no intention, at least in this moment, of re-selling this knife. Like I said, above, it was just a thrill buy. A last second eBay snipe that I was lucky enough to win with a relatively low bid. I will also add that I am leaning in the direction of popping that blister pack open and satisfying my curiosity. But then I remember what curiosity did to the Cat.

It's going to be a very long time before old soldiers are rare enough to command any kind of decent price. One can still pick up the old red knives for not masses of money and they're close to 20 years old now. One day, perhaps 100 years from now, your NIB soldier will be worth double what it is now.

So the only question is whether you personally want to keep it pristine. Personally I don't really see any benefit to keeping it in the box really.

Product placement was purely unintentional. I thought about that after I posted,  I apologize if that was in poor taste. I specifically got the red tritium to go with this SAK, very excited to get this. I love the Rambler for EDC carry!

NO, sorry if that came off wrong. I was just teasing you a bit. Sorry. I loved the pic. Especially as I've never seen that colour combo on the glow fob. Don't let my mindless babble stop you from posting beautiful pics like this.

They look really cool together  :tu: I picked up a glow fob the other day but I found the cerakoting scratches off really easily :( Can't fault the GITD though, it lasts for hours.
