I Love My Mailman!!!

These two recent eBay wins arrived today...

A used but mint condition SwissGrip & a Hoffritz Victorinox gem!

The Swiss grip was listed as used but as far as I can tell it is in A+++ Perfect condition! It came with the original issue Wenger pouch which is quite rugged and contains all of the bits that come with the SG. I especially like the pouch because it allows for vertical or horizontal belt carry. I usually prefer horizontal, so this is perfect. I could not be happier with both of my acquisitions today. After opening the individual packages I spent the next hour just saying "wow!" over and over again. I couldn't believe that they were both in such excellent condition.

Here are some pics of the SwissGrip...

Backside tools...

Front-side tools...

Mint Perfection!...

And now for the ultimate prize!

This older Hoffritz Vic is somewhat of an enigma to me? It has 7 layers and contains the same front-side tools as the Champion Plus. However, the backside only has the awl/reamer, small flathead screwdriver, and corkscrew. I referred to it as "The Ultimate Prize" because, indeed, it is just that! It has all of the tools I had hope to find in my Grail Knife. EVERYTHING! And, after a warm bath in Dawn dish washing soap, a good scrubbing with a toothbrush, oiling, and a new pair of pants, this old Hoffritz gem is just like a brand new knife. Each blade and tool walks and talks like this fine vintage knife just came right off of the assembly line! I am blown away by how nice this knife is! Even the cellidor scales sprang to life with a little Brasso first and then some Jewelers Rouge. This knife will be my new EDC.

Introducing my new Grail Knife...

Now, if one of you with more experience than I can name this child. I would be more than grateful. At first I thought it was identical to my Marlboro Outdoorsman. But it has an extra layer and some different tools. Like I mentioned above; the front-side tools are identical to the Champion Plus. But, alas! The backside is completely different. I really don't care what name it carries. I only know that I have fallen in love with this little guy and that he will be worn proudly in a pouch on my belt. Perhaps one of you can ID this child of mine?

Thank you! Off the top of your head do you recall when Hoffritz in New York went out of business? Or, perhaps, you might venture a guess as to the age of this Hoffritz knife? I'm thinking late 70's or early 80's?

Heres an article on Hoffritz troubles dating them into the 90's:
http://www.nytimes.com/1994/12/17/business/trying-a-jump-start-at-hoffritz.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

knife is potentially up to mid 80's when replaced I think.

Nice!

Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. Although it still does not help me to date this knife. I will just have to be content to know that the lack of a sewing eye on the reamer probably makes it at least a pre-85 issue. The grooved corkscrew definitely establishes pre-91(4)? Regardless, this little guy snaps like a brand new knife. Just as handsome, too!

Cheers!

Tapered awl + no sewing eye + stamped (not inlaid) Hoffritz = 1983-1985.

Thanks, Jazzbass! That right in the ballpark of what I was guessing.

I posted about these 2 Wenger Swiss Memories Esquires. First time I had noticed there were more than one design for them. The Matterhorn peak design is the more common one that I have noticed.

I got this Wenger Rangergrip 61 a few days ago. Im not a 100% happy with it, as the canopener gnaws on my little finger when I use the blade. But it certanly is a beautiful looking SAK!  :tu:

Yes, looks very nice, has one of the nicer variations of the inlay as well.  Good Score.

I thought people would call me crazy for spending more than a modern one costs because of the box...

Just scored a Manager, in perfect condition too!!  I saw it at a garage sale here in my little neighborhood and the guy had a few other knives with it, all marked at $4!  None of the other stuff was worth anything but I snagged this little guy.

A noble effort. However, Wenger's quality is no match for Victorinox, IMO
