Yes a bit odd looking but I would carry that .My latest is a climber given to me by Jock jnr for one reason or another I have not got round to buying myself an edc so jnr came down from his mini man cave  last night and said "Dad I want you to have this it doesn't get used and I know that you gave it to me on our first camping trip but ,memories keep forever things can get lost"
Damn good job he left the room soon after so he couldn't see dad choke up
You will need to prise this from my cold dead hand

PS it's a vintage climber  :climber:

Picked these up today.

A bantam, sportsman and a couple of lumberjacks.

(Image removed from quote.)
nice find indeed, the Lumberjack's are getting hard to find and are excellent little SAKs.  The Sportsaman is also one of my favourite 84mm SAKs, add a mini-driver to the corkscrew and you've got a very feature filled little package. :tu:

Figured my Vic options were missing a Cybertool, and I've not had chance to sample that bit driver yet - so another late night drunken internet purchase has put that right.

I just can't decide if the right smiley right now is this  :tu:, this :drink:, this  :ahhh, or this

I cannot vouch for the Lumberjack, as I haven't carried one before, but I definitely agree with the Sportsman being my favorite 84mm SAK, barely beating the Cadet.  Still wish Vic would make factory 84mm Plus scales. :/

A few more interesting Vic Classics.

I really like the animal print Classics, Dan. :salute:

I was not too sure about the scales at first. But I have decided I quite like them, and I really like the lumberjack in general.

Wenger Junior EvoGrip 574, just in from Switzerland. I didn't forget to pull out the awl; it doesn't have one.

On my recent trip to Alaska I checked out Northern Knives in Anchorage, supposedly the biggest knife shop in the state. They had a good overall selection, but only a small number of Victorinox and Wengers, all common. Most of the gift shops had Esquimo-style Ulu knives, most of them actually made in Alaska (surprise!). Also a smattering of Chinese-made SAK knock-offs.

I find that interesting, Wenger makes this "junior" version with no pointed blade or pointy awl for the kiddos but it still has the wood saw which can cause more damage in an accidental injury. Or are the teeth on the saw blunted?

Great addition to the collection Karl! :salute:

That's actually a really good tool combination. I was surprised that they included the saw on the S17 Junior (aka Junior 03).  While dangerous, no one is usually threatening anyone with a wood saw I'm guessing so parents are not so worried about it.

They included the awl on a couple of junior models, so I think in this case it was a cost saving measure.

I've never really used the Wenger Combo tool, I'll have to try it one day.

Just got a Manager today.  :mail:
Brilliant little tool. I love the pen and the combo canopener/small phillips. It just bumped the Leatherman Style off my keychain. It will make a perfect EDC combination with a larger alox tool for the more heavy duty tasks.

Haven't actually ordered one yet, but I've been  over the CT34 Lite the past few days...  I've been wanting to get an Explorer and add a pair of pliers to it, but the CT34 Lite seems like it could be everything I've been wanting in a pliers-added Explorer, and more...

I just got an Executive that was given to me in sorry shape back from Victorinox repair, almost as-new.

So now I've got the Mammoth Executive, and a regular one too.

Question for other Executive owners: any ideas as to why the file on the Executive is so wimpy? Although it is longer than that of a 58mm SAK, it is less effective.

I've thought a lot about this myself actually, as my work requires I write a lot, so keeping my nails in good shape directly effects how easy/comfortable using a keyboard is for me.

I find it takes a different technique to use effectively.  It's more of a true file, than an emory board, which is the style on all the other SAK nail files I've seen.  It works better for me on fingernails, but less well on the callouses I get around the edges of my fingernails.  If I press my fingertips so the callouses around my nails are under pressure and taught as a result, it works pretty well on them as well as on the nails themselves.

I haven't really done a side by side comparison of the two types, but I've come to prefer it to the emory board style ones.  Because it doesn't have the border around it like the emory board types ones, I think it gives me more control, and I can do finer work with it, but at the same time, it does seem to be less efficient.  I also like that it's larger than the ones on the 58 mm size as well.

Just got a brand new Cadet in the mail  :mail:
The alox bug has bitten me badly, and all kinds of Alox SAKs are magically appearing in my mailbox these days.
The Cadet was surprisingly thin. A bit too thin for my hands if I should need it for some heavy work. It will however be the perfect "suit SAK". It will fit nicely in the pocket of my vest, opposite my  pockesmurfch. (wich looks classy on the outside, but really cheesy on the inside wich shows chairman Mao waving away the seconds )

Just got me a used Wenger Classic 17, without T&T, and a leather pouch for it. ($15 with p&p. ::) :D )

Scales are used, 3/5.
The blade, and the nailfile has been put in fire (at least I think that has happened to it), and both of their ends are discoloured. Not that bad though...

What I don't like is the spring for the nailfile, and the corkscrew isn't as snappy as it should. Any ideas how could I repair this?

Enough with the ramblings, pictures  :D :

Had a couple of craftsman arrive today and I really like them, had one in my pocket all day. The quality of the file really stands out very similar to the one on the spirit.
What materials is it designed for, the diamond file on my wave has proved again and again to be indestructible. It regularly gets used on metal and after a quick blast with a pencil eraser always comes up like new.

As I understand it the more rust resistant the stainless steel the softer it is, so should I use the vic file on only soft materials.

Thanks.

Both Vic files and LM diamond files really set the standard as far as I'm concerned.  I truly love them both.

As I understand it the more rust resistant the stainless steel the softer it is, so should I use the vic file on only soft materials.

It is rather more complicated, but the basic point is free chromium is (usually) what gives a steel rust resistance, while carbon is (one of the things) what makes steel hard and makes it less stain resistant. Carbon will form carbides with the chromium, reducing the amount of free chromium which helps against staining. The really, really stain resistant steels aren't even usable as knife steel. The big problem here is, as always, the general rule does not always apply. Stuff like H1 (a nitride steel) is harder than DIN 1.4110 (Vic steel), but also more stain resistant, S30V is harder than 1095 and obviously very much more stain resistant. And so on and so forth. There's a reason there's a whole industry and field of science dedicated to these problems. What it all boils down to, again and again, is that you always end up with some sort of a compromise.
