Just picked up a used Special Mechanic. Paid too much, but cheaper/easier than cobbling one together.

91mm pliers and an accompaniment of 58mm tools.

Very neat looking little item.  :salute: Think alox grips might be the way to go with that.

Didn't buy anything but I want to post somewhere this photo from a Barcelona knives shop. It has virtually everything but it is even more expensive than Greek shops. I remember it from other trips, it stands there, in a picturesque little square at Gottica.

After reading Neil and Gareth's tutorials, which are amazing and much thanks to you both, and the other skilled and inspirational SAK modders here, I managed to do my first basic mod.

I took a new Marlboro Troubleshooter and swapped out the back phillips for a corkscrew, then decided while I was at it, replaced the chisel with the small screwdriver, then finished with white plus scales. Anyone else notice the chisel seems better paired with the woodsaw and the small screwdriver with the file/metalsaw? Dunno why Vic does this...

Anyhow, here's the result, calling it a Deluxe Mountaineer. Not sure if this mod has been done before, but I did find this SAK much more to my liking now. I might carry it occasionally even though it's a little big for my EDC needs.

Thanks for the help everyone! :tu:

Have you ever tried a suspension clip for your pocket?  I just got a clip for carrying my Explorer suspended in the edge of my pocket and it makes a huge difference.  The bulk is barely noticeable in that position since it's not loose in the pocket.  Nice job by the way :tu:

Thanks Monrogue, yes I have considered it, but it seems anything I attach other than a Vic lanyard quickly gets inconvenient. What I do is safety pin part of my pocket so my EDC stays upright, but even so, anything larger than 4 layers feels too big anymore. I do still miss carrying a SwissChamp sometimes, but a belt pouch would be the only option for that (for me anyway). Cheers!

That's one that I considered getting at one point for my keys.  Right now I have my Executive on my keys, but I want something smaller like the Manager, plus the light would be handy.

Yeah, 4 layers ended up being too much for me (I think 3 may be my limit), but I really like my Explorer, so I figured I'd try a clip.  Thankfully it works great for me :tu:  I'm not a belt sheath person though.

Me too, never could get used to belt sheaths, there is a horizontal carry one by Vic I would like to try though. Without, 4 layers is about my limit, except the Vic Ranger, which is a tiny bit slimmer than my Deluxe Climber, which is my 4 layer maximum at this point. Carried an Explorer Plus for years and loved it, agree with you there! :tu:

It's not exactly a Swiss Army knife, but it is a Vic, and was an issue item to an army....  ;)

My first 108mm!  :tu:  Does anyone have any tips to give an approximate date on this?  The main blade is marked "Victorinox Switzerland Stainless Rostfrei", and I know the file/match striker started in 1985.  Whenever it's from, it's a very neat knife and a nice addition to the collection.  It'll be at work tomorrow.....

I love the Explorer and always considered a 3 layer my limit but because of my love for the Explorer and having the mag glass and inline philips, I purchased the P-7 clip and found it the only way I can handle carrying it.  It works very well and I have carried the Explorer only for about 2-3 weeks without it bugging me on the clip.  No way I can carry it just in my pocket. :D

Same here.  That's why I want a Yeoman really.  It adds the mag/phillips layer to the Compact (another excellent SAK) to make the perfect SAK for me (in cellidor scales anyway ;))  Someday I hope to have someone take my Compact and Explorer and create my Yeoman (with a Climber with the left overs :tu:)
