OPINEL finally makes a new model. It is a partially serrated outdoor knife, OHO, with a plastic handle and integrated whistle. Presented on the IWA 2012 in Nuremberg, Germany.

Well, to be honest, this year I did not manage to get in to the IWA Show. It is a show restricted to dealers and LEO only, so I always have to find a dealer to get me in, this time I failed doing so. But I visited Nuremberg, there are some collectors meetings after the show, where some of the exhibitors show new items.
Still, I missed my favorites this time, no Spyderco, no SOG, no LM.

I played with the little Opinels, and liked them. They seem to be well made, and as they are made of plastic they are really lightweight but still sturdy. I would not say they are perfect to be the only knife you carry in the woods, the blade is just too thin, but it is a great EDC or backup blade. I like the serrations, they are different from most other serrations designs I know of, but they seem to work very well.

I also tried some new ER knives from Italy, but I am not a fan of their designs. They are just a bit too tactical, and while Austrian knife laws are very liberal I still prefer more civilian looking knives.

I talked to some GLOCK representatives too, but they were not allowed to bring any guns from the show with them, as they had no German carry permission.

I had a look on new Fenix lights, but for I´m not too interested in knives I do not remember any names. I might get a new EDC made by Fenix to replace my E1B by Surefire, the lights I played with were amazing bright and small. Great job Fenix!

Short: I am kind of disappointed I did not manage to get in this year, IWA is like a SHOT show in Germany and there are hundreds of manufacturers there. I´ll try again next year. Still meeting knife-nuts was nice, and I had great talks. And, Nuremberg is a beautiful city to visit, so it was no waste of time. And, I got dozens of catalogues, Spyderco, Sog, LM, Benchmade, Surefire, Beretta, ... A lot to read in the near future  :D

Sparky, I have its baby brother, the No12 which was described as a knife you would use for slaughtering rams... (shown with a SAK and a No9)

I have been thinking about getting the 13 too for some time, irrespective of how useless it will be for me...

Maybe it will come with new tactical plastic handles and thicker blade!! That will be a proper folding sword!

Actually, I did buy an opinel as a user, a filet version; I just have not yet found an excuse to use it…

I always wanted a #13 just for the heck of it, but at $70 it's kinda expensive for the purpose.
