I like them.  Great style and utility.  :tu:

It's nice to have decent steel on the table.

:D  There's a bit of a gap in price between the two.

I didn't mind paying $74 for six Sandvik 12C27 table knives direct from Opinel.

Yes QUITE a "gap".

I like the Opinel.  They have such a great look and I can't imagine them being anything but great to use.

Thanks Aloha!  Yes, there's something about them that really appeals to me.
For the money, there's not much sharper out there.

Heck, even at double the price, theres not a lot our there to cut with them!

For some odd reason, at this stage of my life, I actually prefer the smaller ones with no lock. Kind of like the purist Opinel that generations of peasants used with good effect before 1955. I love my number 5, and am picking up a number 4. I understand that the Opinel that Picaso used to carve that sculpture was a number 5!

It was indeed sir!  I have both a 4 and a 5.  As handy as the 4 is, you have to be careful of that one because it had a tendency to open up in your pocket.  The 5 is a great carry, and pairs up great with a Classic.

Hmmm.... I don't have an Opinel.

I had one as a kid which didn't lock very well and lost it years ago but maybe I should look again

Can you peen the pivot rivet down a bit more snug?

I did that to my number 5 and feel a bit safer because of it.

That's a good idea...that should tighten it up a bit :tu:

Just proceed CAREFULLY!

I used two hammers. One laying on the work bench as the anvil, and set the number 5 on it with the end of the backside pivot against the steel. Then, I very carefully set about tapping the top side rivet head with the other hammer. Didn't do anything at first. Tapped a bit harder. nada. Then I tapped it a bit on the harder side several times, trying the action every few hammer "taps."

Finally, after more tapping of a harder nature than I thought would be needed, my number 5 was a nice snug firm action, needing a deliberate pull to open and good push to close. I used the ever lovin dog poo out of it, and its still snug. If I do any world acclaimed sculpture and it loosens up, I'll do the hammer thing again. I do so love the Opinel's with no locking ring mucking it up.
