Great Opportunity!
on: January 25, 2012, 10:53:53 PM
If anyone else wants in on this I can cut you in for a small fee!

Quote
Dear,

I am Mrs Dungar
It is my pleasure to contact you for a business venture which my Son and I intend to establish in your country.

Though I have not met with you before but I believe, one has to risk confiding in someone to succeed sometimes in life.

There is this amount of Two million Three hundred thousand U.S dollars($2.300,000.00) which my late Husband kept for us with a bank here in Cote d'Ivoire before his death.

Now my son and I have decided to invest these money anywhere safe enough outside our Country for security and political reasons. We want you to transfer and invest this fund in any lucrative business were tax will not take much tools.

If you can be of an assistance to us we will be pleased to offer to you 8% of the total fund.

I await your soonest response.

Respectfully yours,

Mrs Dungar

The saddest part of all of this is that this stupid crap still works.   ::)

Actually, it's a scam.  It's a variation on what is commonly known as the 419 scam or more commonly the Nigerian scam as much of it originates from Nigeria, where screwing people over is a badge of honor.

Basically the story often includes a dead relative or deposed dictator trying to flee the country.  They need your help to move the millions (occasionally billions) of dollars out of the country, or you've inherited some insane amount of money, and if you give them your bank account info they'll put the money into your account temporarily.  As a thank you, you will receive a percentage.

The reality is that once they have access to your account they will steal whatever money you have in there, then use your personal info to get credit cards, lines of credit and so on in your name and basically ruin you financially.  It can take years, sometimes even decades for you to clear your name, if it ever even happens.  In the meantime you have no way to get a car loan, mortgage, credit card and you may have trouble setting up accounts for utilities, or even get an apartment if the landlord runs credit checks.  You can find yourself completely screwed in such a way that it very truly ruins the rest of your life.

If you ever get any letters like this, ignore them or forward them to your local police department, who will basically just put them in a file of low priority BS, but might help someone else somewhere along the line.  The fact that they are mostly in other countries, often in countries where law enforcement is very lackluster, nonexistent, or simply have no laws against these kinds of things means that there is really very little chance of ever stopping the thieves, recovering the money or clearing your name.

Despite these scams having been around for years, they are still quite common, which means that people still fall for them.  Don't be one of those people.

The funny thing is that this scam arose from a very legitimate problem - Western businesses that did business with certain African countries often had to pay bribe money (in some cases a substantial amount) to government officials so products or personnel didn't go "missing".  So, people just started sending these e-mails to random companies that did business in Africa to see who would pay, and it evolved in to sending to individuals as well.

Given the rapidly aging (and let's face it, generally non-computer literate) population in the Western world, these emails probably won't be stopping any time soon.

This reminds me, about 4 months ago I started getting emails from suggestive older women asking me if i was interested in spending time together. Normally I'm pretty wary of giving my email address out (even my junk email that these lonely women are sending to). The only recent instance I can think of is when I gave out my email and phone number to some people at the entrance to a Ren Fest for some free hand towels last year. This is why I never give out my real email address.

Attached are three pictures, which I have not (and never will) open. Always uncheck the option to automatically download pictures and attachments y'all.

Here's the email. Subject is: Hi, I am Annie... From [Hilariously bad website name . com]

Quote

Hello I am Annie, divorce woman.I am 35 years of age living in Ghana but a UK born. I am in Ghana because of marriage and i am divorce now these is why i came on [Hilariously bad website name . com] to find my other half.My ex was a prince of Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana but i lost him in a car accident 4 years ago after our divorce.I am devoted christian,I am currently hoping to meet a kind and responsible man who is loving, caring, honest, sincere and faithful, so that we can get to know each other better and see what the future holds for us with God faith. How old are you and how long have you been on that dating site. What do you do for a living?Do you have any kids. What are you seeking for in a relationship.I am caring by nature, perfect householder, so my mom always relies on me in cooking and other chores. I like to laugh a lot and to make other people smile, as well. For me it is very important to see happy people around, to love and to be loved.I am a very family-oriented person. I am positive and sociable, I think that I am a sunny and easy-going personality. I really like animals. I like to develop myself and enjoy new positive emotions.I am looking for a cute, kind, decent, happy, funny man, who is also open and honest, serious in his intentions.I want to find a person I can truly fall in love with, who I can cook for, take care of and just to have a family. Understanding for me is very important. I would like him to have active life because I am very active and I always enjoy doing something. He must be a person I can rely on.I will be looking forward to read from you real soon And also add your pictures when replying back so that we can get to know more about each other.
