Gerber MP600- one for every need?
« on: March 12, 2017, 10:16:43 PM »
I am going through the current Gerber catalogue and I decided to see just how many current MP600's there are.  I was a little surprised by the results.

There are a total of 26 different variations, consisting of 18 variations of the basic MP600, four versions of the Pro Scout, three different versions of the MP600 ST, and the MP600 DET.

I have often said that there were more variations of the MP600 than any other tool, but even I was unprepared for the sheer number of variations, and this is just what's currently listed, and doesn't take into account the tan Iraqi Freedom versions, the yellow, red, blue and green ones, the Terminator versions, the MP650's, or the earlier Multiplier versions.

Nor is it counting the MP400's, MP700's, MP800's or anything else in the Multiplier series, or the current issue Center Drive!   :ahhh

I used to joke that you could center your entire collection on MP600's and probably never get all the variants.... well, it seems that statement is a bit more accurate than I thought!   :ahhh

There is also the Trailrider MP600 (with hoofpick) variant, the Cable Cutter MP600, and the various First Production Run MP600s, sadly all discontinued, and recently Snap-On have released a re-labelled red MP600 (model smt97r).  Did the 26 include the camo MP600 ?

IIRC The blue, red, yellow and green MP600s were from the "build-your-own-Gerber" process where you could specify a custom tool load-out as well as handle colour, so a huge number of possible combinations there .......  ;)

And for me the best thing about MP600's and its variations... if you still can't find one that meets your needs, you can mod it easily. My MP600 has a Pro-scout saw blade, Carbide Bluntnose pliers and none of the tools I don't want or need such as a lanyard ring or plain edge blade.

Eventually I'm going to swap out the knife blade for a file in my MP400 to make a bladeless compact multitool. I know modding voids the warranty but I seriously doubt I'd ever send one back because I got spare pieces to go around.

I love the Gerber MTs so much because of this. I have or have had 9 different models and they were all different. I have 4 now (5 if I hadn't "gifted" my latest one in the failed trade I had on January) and all are customized tool-wise to fill different roles.

It's incredible how many combinations are there, maybe MP stands for Many Possibilities instead of Multi Pliers?

In any case, the best of all is how reliable, tough and just pure "tool-like" they are in all their iterations. From the MP400 to the Legendary MP800 (a true favorite of mine), long live these incredible tools! Maybe someday I'll track them all, they are the true spirit and essence of the good old Gerber name

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool (2x), Rebar, ST300, Kick, Blast, Fuse, Micra (2x), Squirt (3x), Core, Wave, Wingman, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (3x), MP600, Pro Scout, MP700, MP800, Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier (2x), Blacktip (3x), ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs:Waiter, Mountaineer, Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Rambler, Minichamp, Classic SD, Champion, Handyman, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp (2x), OHO Soldier, Golf Tool, Wenger S557, 14, Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest

Now what I don't get is why LM doesn't do the same?  So we get a Rebar, a BO Rebar and a knifeless Rebar, but that's about it AFAIK.  So much scope for more.

I think that list is stretching it a bit.

For example, the bluntnose only comes with insert cutters now, so bluntnose black and bluntnose black with inserts are the same thing.
And again for the packaging, sheath types, tool kits and flashlight etc.

Really you have five models, basic, pro scout, blade less, det, and sight tool.
I believe it's only with the basic model that you can choose between a few options.

Yup, I feel like saying there are currently 26 variants in production is a little disingenuous, seeing as most of the variations are just packaging differences, or the same tool with different accessories.

There are too many versions from my brain to handle.  So I don't try.  Though I can tell the difference between blunt nose and not blunt nose.

Agreed. It's like ingredients at Taco Bell. Cheese that, beef this and fold it up differently and it's a whole new menu item. The Gerbers all seem to swap similar components around, even the new Center Drive is pretty much half MP600. That said, there's something for getting the tool you want in the color you want with your choice of sheath. In this day and age, people want choices.

Half MP600?

Got to disagree with you there. The only things the Center Drive has in common with the MP600 is the serrated blade and file.  Two components are the same, everything else is new and purpose built for the Center Drive.

Seems pretty different to me.

That is exactly what I was thinking as I was reading this as well  If nothing else just have several different options available for order on the website and through dealers in a book :ahhh I would pay more for a tool (Read that as a LM Rebar  ) I could get that would fit my needs better if I could choose what was on it :D

Your right it's almost all new exclusive tools. I misspoke. What I meant to say isn't so much that the "Center Drive is half-MP600" and more that "Gerber likes to reuse components and engineering when possible".

It's an efficient way to do business. Kind of like how automakers share body platforms. One handle of the new Center Drive looks pretty much like a CAD copy/paste of the MP600 with added parts. Now they don't have to stamp out 20 different serrated blades. They've got one in two colors that fit into 20 or so models. Would your average collector consider those variations desirable like how SAK-collectors will buy a tool just for the scale colors? Likely not to that extent but it's a windfall for the average consumer who gets what they want without having to buy something else.

I would actually love to see the Center Drive awl and prybar come to the MP600 side or visa versa, scissors being the first big one. I doubt that will happen anytime soon because the CD is such a money maker. If I could stand losing a long tool on the CD, thanks to the MP600 platform: I could buy another tool, sacrifice my warranty and possibly do that swap myself.

I'll be making a big announcement in a couple of days, so don't go too far.  :D

I guess I am so used to hearing people bash Gerber that I assumed that was what you were doing.  Sorry about that.  :D

I am surprised there isn't a BO version of the Center-Drive, especially considering that it is half BO already.
