I forget who added the stag scales, but he or she did a brilliant job. The stag scales always remind me of Ernest Hemingway's custom pocket knife, so I think of this Outrider as my 'Hemingway Knife'.  :tu:

The Outrider is one of my favorite Victorinox SAKs. It is big, but I love the toolset and the size of the 111mm tools. This particular Outrider was a surprise gift from our own Douglas. He didn't realize that the Outrider was a favorite of mine, but righty guessed that I'd love this one!

Big Hairy Jacobean Fuzz Day 25

My dear Dad's (God rest his sole) Basket Handled Broadsword. He made this over the course of two years when I was about five or six and the whole process was a major source of intrigue and excitement for me.

During that period I effectively became his chief production assistant (speSmurfpillsing in handing up and holding down) and main design critic whenever concept drawings or sketches where being produced (normally with a bic pen) during the early design process and often during fabrication when problems were encountered.

When finally finished, to my mother's disgust, the sword was placed pride of place above the living room telly, my father was immensely proud of his gargantuan achievement and I was immensely proud of him. Here now was undeniable proof, without any shadow of a doubt, that we were indeed bona fide Highlanders probably descended from ancient kings (the more important evidential fact that my grandparents were all fluent Gaelic speakers hadn't yet donned on me at that early age).

Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, lend an ear, ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, ye Jacobites by name, your faults I will proclaim, your doctrines I maun blame, you will hear, you will hear, your doctrines I maun blame, you will hear... etc, etc...

Priceless piece of Highland craftsmanship  :tu:
And thanks for sharing the story behind it  :D

Ach! That's a wonderful bit of family treasure there. Very cool.  :like:

I think Andy Stewart sings a really nice version of that song, by the by. I'm very sorry that we no longer have Andy Stewart with us. Like so many, he left too young and too soon.

I was thinking more The Corries when I was writing it - anybody growing up in 70s/early 80s Scotland will know what I mean.

As for Andy Stewart, they're both gone. Poor Andy M Stewart of Silly Wizard is also dead... Died on the operating table poor sod... think he was only in his 50s too.

Day 25
A Sheffield British Army Knife
While in the Navy on a Carrier Strike Group Staff, we were doing an Multinational exercise called BALTOPS.  At the end of the exercise, most of the ships pulled into Kiel.  One of the British Officers, who I had communicated a lot with, and I did a trade.  I gave him a ship Zippo and he gave me this knife.  We sealed the deal over a Snake Bite.

I saw them once in a pub in Portree after the games, the whole local pipe band came in and fired up the pipes and drums, the noise was deafening, but absolutely awesome  :tu:

I made a pocket knife a while back... That's not quite the same is it? Also, not having children myself, I'd have to borrow someone's kid to replicate the experience... and that's frowned upon a bit.

Incidently, my Dad and other members of his family helped to build the road to Portree back in the 50s... in between frequent bouts of extreme drinking apparently.

Just a bit, but you don't need kids, just hang it up next to your dads, i'm sure you learnt how to do it while watching him, and seeing how good it turned out you probably learnt a few swearwords too  :tu:

The Outrider got used to snip a few greens from the garden for lunch. Then again to open a sack of bird seed. The birds have been gorging themselves this year. Love me some Vic scissors!
