Day 25 (Bonus material):

The Outrider got used to snip a few greens from the garden for lunch. Then again to open a sack of bird seed. The birds have been gorging themselves this year. Love me some Vic scissors!

That's the bloke I'm thinking of. Corries do some fine stuff, but Andy was one of a kind. I saw him live a couple of times. Damn, he was fun.

Aye, Andy M Stewart was great. Johnie Cunningham died a while back too, there's not much left of Silly Wizard now... Cheery conversation Nix.

I'm guessing you didn't get bit by a snake on purpose as that can be a pita.

Day 25
Svörd Peasant mini (a gift from Magentus), and a Victorinox 108mm Solo (GAW from glenfiddich1983). Thank you guys  :hatsoff:

Both are super light and great companions for any hike or picknick  :D They couldn't be any more different.

...I didn't dare to put the 108mm Solo into much use yet though

Intriguing Svord

Day 25.
Only just made it in time.
Jaktkit Knv2.

That looks like a nice workhorse

Day 25: Opinel #8 Outdoor. Plastic handle, with an emergency whistle. Viroblock lock, thicker blade with shackle key (works as a OHO). Stainless steel. A more modern take on a classic knife.

Very cool Opinel.  I’ve never seen one without a wood handle

Day 25: My little collection of Juices.
Left to right, CS4, S2 and the rare SC2.

Nice blue trio

Day 25

Ka-bar folder

Usually Ka-bar means a military fixed knife but this is something different. The tang stamp says ´Ka-bar Cleveland, Ohio 2753´ on the mark side and ´HI-STAINLESS JAPAN´ on the pile side. I don´t have any more info on this knife.

It´s one of my oldest knives and it has seen a lot of use and some abuse.

Very unique looking Ka-bar
Big Hairy Jacobean Fuzz Day 25

My dear Dad's (God rest his sole) Basket Handled Broadsword. He made this over the course of two years when I was about five or six and the whole process was a major source of intrigue and excitement for me.

During that period I effectively became his chief production assistant (speSmurfpillsing in handing up and holding down) and main design critic whenever concept drawings or sketches where being produced (normally with a bic pen) during the early design process and often during fabrication when problems were encountered.

When finally finished, to my mother's disgust, the sword was placed pride of place above the living room telly, my father was immensely proud of his gargantuan achievement and I was immensely proud of him. Here now was undeniable proof, without any shadow of a doubt, that we were indeed bona fide Highlanders probably descended from ancient kings (the more important evidential fact that my grandparents were all fluent Gaelic speakers hadn't yet donned on me at that early age).

Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, lend an ear, ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, ye Jacobites by name, your faults I will proclaim, your doctrines I maun blame, you will hear, you will hear, your doctrines I maun blame, you will hear... etc, etc...

Great sword and story.  That had to have been a wonderful experience helping make it.

DAY 25

Well today is our 26th wedding Anniversary and I’ve got the day off work. A nice relaxing day and I can’t see me needing much in the way of knives except maybe a bottle opener so this standard MP600 has easily got that covered

Congrats :woohoo:

DAY 25
Well the rest of my month might be really busy, so I hope I don't forget to post one of these last five upcoming days.  Here's a Camillus CarnivoreX (and it's little sidekick that isn't very comfortable to use tbh).  The first version of this machete had a rat tail tang through two poorly designed scales with screws and I managed to destroy it fairly quick.  I'm glad they upgraded the handle to the molded one piece design as this is now one great machete.
They say the pen is mightier than the sword.   However... there is a dead guy here with a Bic in his hand and a Samurai walking away.

A bowie
This is the old Schrade Tough Bowie. They discontinued probably about a decade ago which is when I got mine on clearance. Just about every Chinese no name manufacturer copies these things, so the off brands are quite common flea market fare.

Note; the business card in the corner is not mine and probably about 15 years old. Leon forged a tomahawk and knifet that I've shown off here before. The tomahawk made appearance in my 30-day axe challenge
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.

Day 21: A Micro-sized Scissor Tools

I did a group of tools yesterday, so why not another today.

I don't currently use any of these scissor tools regularly. I use the Paul Chen all the time, but these are drawer queens for the most part. One of them may end up on a set of my keys, maybe. From upper left in a clockwise manner, we have a modified Schrade Tough Chip, a cheapie Craftsman, a Sog Crosscut 2.0, and in the center a Leatherman Micra:

And since I wasn't paying much attention when I took the pics, they're in a different order when opened up in scissor mode.

Surprisingly, the cheapie $10 craftsman tool has the best scissors of the bunch. They go through paracord easily, they're thick and beefy and exceptional at everything I've tried cutting.  Second place goes to the SOG Cross-cut. The extra leverage is nice, and the curved cutouts on the handles and tools make it more comfortable to hold. They don't quite cut paracord, but they do a good job at everything else.  I will say the gears do catch up on things and make it a little difficult to go through thicker material, but the scissors themselves cut through thick stuff with ease thanks to the compound leverage.  The Leatherman is third. The scissors are still quite good, but are even worse at paracord than the SOG, and they're smaller to boot.  Finally, the Tough Chip. Stock, this is the worst of the bunch. The scissors don't cut anything well except paper. Anything thicker gets bent instead of cut, and the scissors themselves are very soft and easily damaged by staples or even by themselves if you twist it the wrong way during a cut. However, I've drilled out the rivet, removed the spring washer, and filed down the pivot, and replaced the rivet with a screw so I can adjust the pivot looseness. In this manner they cut slightly better than the leatherman, but the soft steel is still a problem. So still last place.

Here's a comparison of the blades.

The Craftsman blade is the longest, and it's the only one that's ground on both edges. However, I prefer the SOG CrossCut's blade the best. It's much deeper and has that nice indentation on the spine for my thumb.  The Schrade is my second choice, because it's the only one with a blade without a handle underneath it. So it could potentially be used for cutting food in a pinch. It's also the only one of these four that locks in place. In fact, three out of four fold-out tools on the Schrade lock.

Speaking of tools, they all have a similar selection:

As said, all the fold-out tools on the Scrade lock except for the bottle opener/micro driver. The phillips driver, flat driver, and blade lock, but not the bottle opener/eyeglass driver. There is a very good diamond file (best of the bunch), a decent set of tweezers, and a beefy toothpick that are removable. Only this Schrade and the Leatherman had micro-drivers that fit eyeglass screws without modification.

The CrossCut also has a toothpick and tweezers, but they're attached to the tool. You also get a flat driver, bottle opener with too-thick eyeglass driver, and a worthless hunk of smooth metal they call a file. No phillips driver here. I like these tweezers a lot better than the Leatherman tweezers, as they're bigger and require less force to close.

The Leatherman here has the third-best file, flat driver, tweezers, bottle opener, and a usable eyeglass driver. The phillips driver is 2D and there... it's not the best at screws, but it's usable in a pinch. The 2D driver on the Tough Chip is a lot better, actually.

Finally the Craftsman. This is the only tool of the bunch that has a SAK-style backspring for each tool. Most, but not all tools, open with a nice snap. It comes with the second best file, it has a single cut on one side and crosscut on the other, and is quite aggressive. It's the only one here with a 3D phillips (albeit a small one) and a CAN OPENER (which also doubles as a bottle opener). It has a small punch/awl, a micro driver, and a flat driver as well. None of these tools have an edge. They're all super-polished by the factory, and I had to take a file to sharpen the flat driver, the eyeglass driver, the can opener, and the teeny little awl. Once sharpened, the can opener actually does a passable job of opening a can. It's small so it takes a while, but it works. The punch tool is too small and short to be of any use to be honest, but the phillips driver does a decent job. All these tools snap open nicely on the backspring except the eyeglass driver. My copy has a mm or so of play in it. I think I got a bad one, as another one on the wall at Ace didn't have that problem. I will say, the longer tools have far more SNAP to their backsprings, and even snap closed. The small tools will snap open but not closed.

So which one is going on my keys?

Well, common sense says the modified (sharpened) Craftsman should. It has the best scissors, a perfectly usable 3D phillips driver, the longest blade, the 2nd-best nail file, and a freaking can opener. It's the obvious choice...... but.... it's so.... BIG. It's huge, actually. Those backsprings take up a lot of real estate, and make it heavy to boot. It's not good on a set of keys. Same deal with the Scrade, it's too large to effectively fit on a keyring for me. It ends up being a choice between the Leatherman and the SOG. While the SOG misses out on having a phillips driver and usable nail file, the toothpick is a wonderful tool to have, and the blade is much better to use than any of the others on these mini multitools. And since it's replacing a Victorinox SD, I'm essentially just trading better scissors for a crappier file.

Charles.

Day 25. Cutco 1886 "Pocket Knife". 3 5/16 closed, 2 3/8 blade. Just enough knife for most stuff, and I love the handle grip. While I still feel Cutco pockektnives may be a bit overpriced (when pretty much anything else at its price is at least 440C or VG-10; while they use 440A), it is really good. As of late, I've really been going nuts with buying mid-sized moderately priced lightweight lockbacks. Great for shorts and sweatpants.

I remember when I bought mine at Walmart, and the woman at the checkout counter gave me a weird look and said "Just what are you going to do with a knife this big?". I bought it for the ATV, as we have some brushy areas that are a mess. I need to sharpen mine.  The Carnivore, as much as I like to critcize nearly all Acme Camillus products, is actually pretty decent. The little neck knife--safety hazard.

Day 26

After finding out about the Victorinox Yeoman on this forum, and seeing various examples here, I thought I’d try and find one..... Should have known better,... I suspect rocking horse manure and hen’s teeth are easier to lay your hands on!  So, I set to and made my own - most of the functions of one of my favourites, the Explorer, but one layer fewer, what’s not to like? Today it will be accompanying me on an exciting day at the desk, and then hopefully cracking open a few bottles later!

The marvelous Victorinox Recruit. Small enough to take anywhere,  big enough to do the job. Has the smooth back as no rear side tools which is a major plus for me. D also love this knife in 91mm .Often lent out to my youngest son to use under supervision, will probably become his knife one day in the not so distant future .

Day 25 (Happy Catfish Day!):

Today's carry is a modified Victorinox Outrider:

(Image removed from quote.)

The Outrider is one of my favorite Victorinox SAKs. It is big, but I love the toolset and the size of the 111mm tools. This particular Outrider was a surprise gift from our own Douglas. He didn't realize that the Outrider was a favorite of mine, but righty guessed that I'd love this one!

I forget who added the stag scales, but he or she did a brilliant job. The stag scales always remind me of Ernest Hemingway's custom pocket knife, so I think of this Outrider as my 'Hemingway Knife'.  :tu:

Damn, that's awl kinds o'

Day 26
Since I commented in a disclaimer on an old business card being in yesterday's photo I figure today I'll show off two blades I have that were made by the farrier/smith it belonged to.

The 1st is a simple fold over tomahawk w/ an unwelded wrap eye. I've taken this on a number of hunting and hiking adventurous I replace the handle several times. The current handle is a piece of 1x2 red oak I just rough shaped and knocked the corners off.

The knife is an extra for a set of throwing knives he made for a competitive knife thrower that then wound up in a fundraiser raffle. This thing is massive and weighs 1 pound 4 oz. The sheath is actually the first non-cardboard sheath I ever made, as you can see by the extra holes it was originally supposed to have more rivets that does. This knife to throws beautifully and sticks deep.

That is a Leatherman ST300 sitting next to it for scale

Day 26: A small "tactical" Elite force. These are made by Umarex/Walther, the handgun company. Not the best quality, but not very expensive, either. They're not my favourite brand, but this model is quite nice. Great ergonomics, perfect for office or small cutting tasks.
