Day 23:

Today I tried to "fix" the edge on the Lambsfoot. I used a Dremel to cut in a choil, which removed some of the recurve. I then used coarse stones to grind out the waviness in the edge. This took longer than expected and in the process, I removed enough metal to grind out the choil!

Finished up with finer stones, the Hard Arkansas stone for a keen edge. Stropped with a 1/2 micron diamond paste on a leather strop. The blade is a bit thinner, but wicked sharp. I don't think I did a perfect job, but I think it is better. I'm still tempted to add another choil, but that can be done later.  :D

Hope Dean would have approved!

Thanks, fellas.

I ended up taking off more steel than expected, but I do think it is better and will be easier to resharpen well later.

This knife has had some quirks right out of the box, but I really like it anyway. Perhaps it is more personal for having some quirks.  :dunno:

Regardless, it makes for a nice carry and I haven't cut myself with it...yet.

This RR Red Pick Bone Peanut is one that grew on me.
I'm still a little bugged by that R...but a Peanut with a spear point blade! :tu:

If I learned one thing in this challenge, it's that I prefer carrying smaller, lighter pocket knives.  I decided to go to the extreme end of this and buy a very small knife - a Case Tiny Trapper.
:like: My preference for carriers, however, is between three and four inches closed.

Today I tried to "fix" the edge on the Lambsfoot.
You certainly did better than I would have! :tu:

Day 23

Not a collection (LoopCutter's is superb!), but a singular Stockman: a Schrade 834UH. Being 3 5/16 inches long and legal in any area that hasn't gone completely insane about blade lengths, this one would be a great carrier. But as long as I own it and things still have value as collectibles, it'll stay all pretty and unused (except for very occasional paper slicing).

I thought I could keep up while visiting family but realized the picture taking just wasn’t on my mind even if using the knife.

Even today I was handling several of my Dad’s traditionals and didn’t take a single picture.  But here is a picture relaxing tonight.

Day 23 -

All that talk of STOCKMANS, had me assembling my clan and begin comparing the few I had.

Group photo
[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

When I understood that these pocket knives were called slip joints and were defined by patterns, the Stockman was the model I first embraced.  Feel head over heels for a Camillus model 66 that I found in a Pawn shop. And since acquired a couple Buck 301s and then a 373 in a gift set, And most recently a Yellow Case at a flea market and others in between.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

Interesting that the blades are placed differently.

But, from what I have fiddled with Buck’s 301 has the back spring just right.  Easy to deploy, good snap to shut and holds blade very firmly when open. The Case back spring is very stiff, much more than needed and a steel trap for closing.  Just my humble opinion😉

Nice collection!  When collecting Stockman, I started with mid to large size, but eventually the smaller stockman starts growing on me.  So handy in such a small package, in some ways it does remind me of the 74mm or 58mm SAKs. :tu:

Oh my...................      :ahhh        :like:     Colorful pen!    :tu:
Thanks David!  Definitely step over to the Dribby Nib challenge in Break room, many cool pens are showing there and like Nix said, totally caught myself in that rabbit hole... :D

Day 23

You might have noticed that I've been away from home for a few days so a few packages needed opening when I got home earlier today.

Some knives you fall in love with the moment you get them.  Others, you don't.  Some of those you might never come around to liking, some of those might, just might, grow on you.  Happily this RR Red Pick Bone Peanut is one that grew on me.
RR value just hard to beat, and it's cool to see a peanut size Barlow.  :tu:

Great job!  One thing I sometimes struggle with sharp collecting is whether I should 'fix' anything, and always kudos to those who can do a good job with the fix.  :hatsoff:

Good Morning AWL :hatsoff:

So many, many excellent traditional knife patterns pictured this month. And information shared as well.  I am humbled just being part of this challenge. ,

Speaking of information!
@Steve.
I have a Barlow I found several years ago at a South Bend pawn shop and then forgot about, I pulled out last night and was looking it over, and besides the impossible backspring, I found it different.
Included are the pictures, showing the tang stamp, and the liners that appear oversized yet fitted, as if to protect the scales.
Anyone have insight about the company and handle design?  I would like to learn…
