Day 25(4)

(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)
Bulldog Jack knife and A. Wright Barlow.  Got the A. Wright last year, and have to do a complete regrind of the knife.  Really, really uneven grind and it must have been a late Friday afternoon knife I suspected.  The job is no where near perfect, but at least I no longer have to think about it every time I opened the blade. :)

Sadly this seems to be a recurring theme for Arthur Wright knives.  They're made fast and in quantity to keep prices down, but that seems to mean the edge grinding often comes out poorly.  With that said, I'll still buy them, just with the knowledge that some home profiling might be needed.

Steve hit the nail on the head: Ideals are definitely cheapos. I have one, and it looks like it's held together with hollow shank pop rivets. I can't recall seeing another knife with such construction. However, it is kind of cool in its own odd little way, and Ideal made some fish knives that are worth buying for the whale shield...if you can get 'em cheap.

Day 24

I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about this one. It's a Ka-Bar 1056, sort of a miniature serpentine jack. My limited research turned up a broad range of possible production dates and some differing opinions on said dates. Does anyone have any more information on this one?

Day 25

we're on the home straight now I think.  :woohoo:

A relatively new one to me; a Case #087 "Working" Jack with black Delrin covers.  As far as I can tell Case saved a bit of construction time by not polishing the blades and so this comes in at a slightly lower price point that most similar sized knives.  This is basically an upscaled Peanut that costs less.  :D

(sorry for the dust on the scales, I should've given it a wipe before taking the photo.)

Good score  :like:

As they should do with every knife. The high polish they put on their stainless blades shows fingerprints way too easily.

Nice little jack, by the way! :tu:

Really, really uneven grind and it must have been a late Friday afternoon knife I suspected.
Or an early Monday morning knife. :D

Looks like they've used that stamping between 1955-1965  :salute:
I ran across that tang stamp chart as well. However, I've awlso heard some folks say that Ka-Bar didn't add model numbers to their tang stamps until the late 1960s. It's not critically important that I find out; I'm happy to have the knife, and the little bit of mystery is engrossing and enjoyable.

Day 25

Today I present the Camillus 72. The shape and heft give it a really good feel in the hand, and it's quite the cutter. I'm forever grateful to Steve for sending it my way.

Day 26

Back with a vintage penknife for me this morning.  Made by Joseph Elliot (& Sons) this isn't your run-of-the-mill Sheffield knife.  Everything about it says "quality", from the steel itself, to the F&F and the weight of the pull and snap.  It's also significantly larger than most penknives at 3 3/4" (compared to around 3 1/4" for most).

I was hoping to order a lambfoot with more premier material from them, but that's exactly the reason I am a little reluctant to.  Does anyone know of any good reliable maker that would offer lambfoot in stag from (Sheffield) UK?  :pok:
