I bought this Skipper back in 2019 from eBay.  The seller added a note with the purchase, it said, "This was listed as one of the top 5 sailing knives 2 years ago by Sail Magazine. I bought it in Kinsale Ireland."
I enjoyed knowing some history about the knife even it was a modern knife.

Wow - I love that back story too FB
And really good to know that the sailing professionals appreciate the Skipper, ie for what it is designed for, ....
as opposed to us who like it just coz it has nice scales

Kinsale BTW is a beautiful sailing town on the South coast of Ireland in County Cork -
A friend of mine married an Irish lass from there - And we had a wonderful wedding weekend in Kinsale

Mine is slide-locking.
More about them here:

I have the exact knife, from my sailor son.  I prefer the slider lock.  It's much easier to use.

The FX for Four Layer Friday  :tu:
Perhaps needless to say... :like:

Today it was the Farmer X...
:like: I should have showed my Farmer X today!

So Important Question for the Boss .......
And/or for all of you - for that matter!!!    :D

How on earth are you deciding which model to post each day?   ???
I just go with one that I haven't shown previously. But I'll get in at least a few that have a good Wiki page.

Day 17

Because it happens to be Spartan Saturday, here's my carrier Spartan. Ruby is a color I've had much trouble photographing, but this photo conveys the brilliance reasonably well.

So Important Question for the Boss .......
And/or for all of you - for that matter!!!    :D

How on earth are you deciding which model to post each day?   ???
  • Randomly opening the drawer/cupoard and pulling one out?
  • Choosing super cool models?
  • Choosing models with good Wiki pages?
  • Making sure you have a wide and varied selection?
  • All of the above?

PS. Loving this thread

If there was any rhyme or reason to the things I do I'd think we would all need to be quite terrified.   :ahhh

Although today and the next five days are going to be dominated by various Trekker/Trailmasters since I was challenged to do variants of the same model for a whole week.

A challenge within a challenge!

Day two of the "variants of the same model" features this one- my OHR, or One Handed Recurve.

This may be cheating as it is a modded knife- I like recurred blades and so I ground this one into a recurve.  As you can tell, this one has been used a lot since then.  It has been one of my regular go-to blades for a lot of jobs and it wears its scratches proudly.

Read all about the model it was when it left the factory at SAKWiki.com! https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Trekker

Day 18

A whole party of Huntsman! As near as I can tell (from right to left)

1980-1985 Ecoline Cellidor
1985-1992 Maineline Cellidor Plus Scales
1992-2005 Ecoline Nylon
2011+ Mainline Cellidor and Bubinga? Wood

The Huntsman is, in my mind, the quintessential Swiss Army Knife. They're the one I recommend most often for people as a "first and only" ( ) urban/camping hybrid SAK, and (imo) the lightest "take all comers" model Vic makes. The Swisschamp definitely has some nice bells and whistles, but usually the Huntsman has enough to muddle through. While I personally prefer the scaler as my fourth layer tool, the saw is damn handy, and I'm never sad to have one of these in my pocket.

Day 17 for September 17

Once upon a time, I had no idea what or where to use this tool. I knew it was called an awl but us kids then often wondered why was there a push-dagger-like thingy in a utility knife lol

Long after that, the awl is an implement I often demand on my tools and even got picky with it! I love the in-line awl of the alox series and wish it would be implemented in 91mm or 111mm models!

Yay for the Huntsman
Yours, ..... errrrm ......... Huntsman

Yep agree - And didn't Vic also agree with you, that it's their most popular 91mm model after the Spartan. Thought I read that somewhere.
Although I am more of a Climber/Compact/Explorer man these days     :twak:
But will always have a SAK saw with me when I go hiking     :tu:

Nice group! :tu: Seems an Angler Plus would be well worth seeking out, as it adds the scaler to the Huntsman tool set.

Day 18

Slightly late! :ahhh
This time around, I'm showing the Pepita. It was part of the Classic SD Annual Limited Edition Series in 2010. The lady of the house kept this one in her purse (in a Victorinox slip) for about a decade, so it could use a little additional clean-up. Wish I would have bought another to preserve.

I like the width of 4s better than 5s generally, but the scaler is thinner than the mag layer...

This one is dedicated to a good friend and MTO member Dtrain!

Perhaps the most important model in the Trekker/Trailmaster variants is actually not a Trekker/Trailmaster at all, but a Soldier.

The Victorinox One Handed Trekker/Trailmaster became the basis for the new Swiss Army Issue knife in 2008.  Not only that, this was the first knife to introduce dual density scales- the green nylon is a different material than the black edges, which have increased wear and impact resistance.

Read all about the new Soldier model at SAKWiki.com! https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Soldier+2008

Very fitting tribute FB.

I'll be refraining from posting a pic' again today (I owe two now)

I saw the funeral cortège pass by Heathrow. It was the best I could do as I was working, but it still meant something.

Rest easy Boss.

I have adored and admired her for years.
I remember the day my dad corrected me when I called her the Queen Mother.  My dad loved all things historical.
My dad was part of the crowd in London during her Coronation in 1953, he was stationed there while he was in the air force.
I woke at 2 a.m. today as I wanted to see all of the live coverage since I was unable to be there to wish her my most heartfelt goodbye.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Day 19

Moving into 3 layer territory now. Tonight's knife is technically one of my daughter's. The rainbow scales on this Super Tinker are perfect for her. This was the second run of VSAKCS's club knife from last year. Pictures don't do the scales justice, and I'm glad I stopped by the store in person while they still had some. Every one of those colors is an individual piece of cellidor, and the black "lines" are actually small gaps, giving it a great grippy texture. I'd love to see Vic start manufacturing this style (even if mono colored) as a regular option.

Day 18 for September 18

IMO, the cybertool layer is what brought the SAK to the ‘modern age’. These days one would come across torx, hex and all sorts of screw bits beyond flat and philips. The cybertool kinda made the SAK catch up to current parts and trends.

….but yeah, a dedicated screwdriver and bit kit are much cheaper but are you gonna go all the way to the garage/shed/toolbox for them?

Day 19, September 19

Once upon a time the Locksmith was the thickest 111mm SAK with liner lock that you could find locally. This was when the other 111mm models still had that sliding mechanism on the side. I would have preferred the OHO blade but some would say it gets in the way of properly using the other tools aside from the knife.

How I wish they had an in-line awl….
