That 5 is a wee one, let us know if the lack of the locking ring ever makes any inconvenience or issue.

Day 13

My No.7 opening a No.8 pruning knife. I am excited to compare it to the smaller SAK pruning blade I like so much.

Opinel '24 Day 13
I think the pruning knife has the most comfortable handle but I don't have a lot of use for a knife that is sharp on the top of the blade instead of at the bottom.  I guess I need a vineyard now.

You're going to like that No. 5 Tony!

And from that envelope came a No.5 just a bit larger than lip balm... but sharp!

DAY 13

The wallet is over 60% finished, with help from the No7 and a small classic friend.

I am genuinely interested to see it finished.

Personally, I don’t usually use the locking rings on the knives that have them.  There is enough friction between the blade and handle that the knife isn’t going to fall open, fall closed, or work itself open in pocket. (Though I suppose this might change with time and use.)

If I’m going to be using the knife for an extended period, I’ll lock it open.  But for those “one-and-done” tasks, I generally don’t bother.  And I’ve never felt the need to lock one closed.

Anyone else using theirs this way?

I am much the same, all my blades have friction enough that they wont move. My No 7 is most sticky of all.

A few more intense tasks have had the blade stick in the wood and start closing as I pulled away, which is a minor concern. I guess with the small models this would be less likely since digging in hard would be limited.

All of my older opinels just fall out, where the wood has worn away at the pivot. I have been installing match sticks for years to get the blades to bite when closed..... nothing worse than having an open folder in the pocket  :ahhh

Mine are so old they do not have the lock closure when folded......hmmm I feel a modified No8 will be happening soon

Nope, I use the locking rings when open.
I am use to traditional knives and the backspring to be stiff enough to provide enough pressure against the blade to provide added friction.

No so much when close, as I have pocket sheaths I utilize to stream line knife for riding in my pocket or bag.

I am new to these Opinels, so if the ring is there, it must be a reason.  😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I pretty much always use the ring. I don't even think about it, just muscle memory.

Been pondering the #7 outdoor a little. I like the 6 and 7 sizes, but I'm not a big fan of the blunt tip. I filed the tip on the DIY 8 when I screwed up carving the handle, so I'm wondering if I could do something similar...

Me too Nate.  I rarely use the rings at all, and an Opinel is part of my off work EDC 90 percent of the time.

Salmon looks good. How are you preparing it. I normally grill it on a Cedar or Alder plank. Just curious how they do it over in your neck of the woods.
