DAY 12  The  tip broke off of this firefly, so it rides under the saw on my Wave.

I broke all my firefly’s. I found that cutting a flat side onto a stick, and then setting the FF on the flat to support it during strikes made it last a lot longer before breaking.  Truly is an emergency tool that works best with waxed tinder or charcloth.

Yes, it has the permanent  match or whatever it is called.  Son said it is a $20 Amazon lighter.
I think I have probably seen the same thing on the Chinese equivalent ebay (not aliexpress), and it costs around 6+usd.  Crazy how much margin they were asking when someone bring it over to amazon.

I still have more fungus left so I'm going to try with the Nanostriker and a mag block/ferro rod to see if that helps.  The fungus is pretty thick though so I'm going to tear it into thinner pieces and try with the Firefly again.

Day 11

I'll be using my trusty Zippo this weekend.  I think I've had it for nigh on 25yrs.

(Image removed from quote.)
Is this a 41 Zippo?  Looks well loved, awesome!

Cool!  My 2350 is rugged, I don't know how many times I have dropped it on concrete, and it still works great.  It was black anodized,  now silver from  pocket wear, with keys, multitools,  change, etc.
I have hot Roddenberry two or three m6's, one even has a Malkoff drop in unit.  Not done with them all, yet.  Lots of fun.
Not to mention those M6 has such a mass, they could absorb heat pretty well.  I have just placed a 2350 in my Amazon basket, side effect of joining a challenge--always find something to buy. :D

Day 12

Just got this lighter yesterday and wanted it to work, but these particular vintage lighter has an inherent design flaw, where the gas tank is made of plastic and it is easy to leak.  So I am returning it today.

Took a picture of it just for the sake of it, if the gas is filled, the bottom right round window will turn red to indicate it is full.  Pretty neat design, shame it did not function properly as it supposed to.

Day 12
By comparison the grey Mag seems quicker to get a smolder going.  I tried ignition of fatwood shavings and they would not take it with the amount of cloth I had left. So I gave it a little help.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Inspired by Enginears. I forget sometimes the mag lens may actually be able to light something.

Dat 11 and Day 12

Well I forgot to upload yesterday. But here are yesterday and today's.

I discovered the douk douk puts off a very poor spark. So I won't rely on that combination in the future.

NexTool 5024. Probably the best thing they make. Blade, saw, massive scissors, and even a small ferro rod.

🔥DAY 12🔥

tried to start a fire with the magnifying glass but the sun was too low on the horizon by that late in the day. So resorted to the bic lighter to get things going. used some cotton and wax paper that I had stored away in the keychain titanium in Travel tube. it actually worked quite well!

I'm afraid I may have to throw in the towel on this one fellas. Kids have all been sick, baseball practice, Gymnastics, and work has resulted in falling days behind. I'll keep watching though

I remembered the mag glass on mine wouldn't easier lit things up as well, I ended up painting the paper black to get the fire going.  I wonder would it work if you paint those tinder black as well...

 Might need to do an experiment to see, perhaps later in the month.

Day 13

I was very happy to receive the signal from Sherry today! We are fortunate to be blessed with generous folks on here. I immediately put it to task, saw for fine dust, knife for curls, and the ferro rod.

Bad reception at the house last night, but here it is.
I carried a bic lighter with gorilla tape wrapped around it.

Yes, it is, I believe it is called a dice tray.  About 6 inches across, and one inch deep.

🔥DAY 13🔥
cloudy and rainy today so no fire starting attempts with the mag glass.

carried the Dunhill rollagas and tried to light some incense but it failed to light again. I think it's the butane regulator but it could be many things because it's a really finicky lighter.
:twak:

its quite a handsome lighter- circa 1960s- but it's not reliable in the slightest. so the bic (not pictured ) stepped in as a back up.

vintage rollagas can be quite capricious so definitely not something to rely on in a survival situation. I may need to pick up something more reliable- any suggestions for a reliable survival lighter would be appreciated.

yes the orange thinge is a silicone sleeve to protect the sapphire lens of the titanium magnifying glass. It also came with a glow in the dark sleeve as well.

that's a rather nice-looking zippo you have there

In my experience, Bics are as reliable as anything and probably more reliable than most other options.

I have some that have been riding around in a Ziploc bag in my hiking/camping backpack for years.  I tested them last week, and they all lit right up.
