Day 25

I keep almost all of my collection in containers in my office, so I could realistically have 99% of my collection in the car within 10 minutes.  In the same area, I have my computers/devices, important papers, and a few bins of heirloom type items.  My wife has done the same thing with her evacuation items.  I think we could have both of our SUVs stuffed with almost all of our "must save" items within 15 minutes... maybe less.  Yes, we live in a "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone" and have been through two close calls.  :ahhh

That said, in the spirit of this challenge, I'm grabbing two tools:

1. My ARC since it's my most useful tool.  I just mounted the PC Doodle flashlight too :tu:
2. A cheap SAK clone.  My daughter bought it for me just because she knows how much I like multitools. On paper, it's a piece of crap, but it's really one of my most treasured items 🥰

I'm still here in Leatherman gap.  Actually in a barn in Leatherman gap.  There was a bridge collapse when two vehicles collided and the old wooden bridge burned down.  I saw some vehicles parked near an old barn and a good sized house.  The barn had several people sitting around.  I found out they were stranded as well.  There was a scattering of candy bars and such, but no food.  I put the Coleman stove on my truck tailgate and opened up a jumbo can of red beans and rice and the tortillas.  A woman said she would take over the cooking, and who am I to argue?  So the rest of us sat around telling about their various misfortunes and waiting for the beans to heat.
Jolly little group, right?  It was until the owner of the house (and barn) woke up and came over.  He heard the pleas of the stranded group and sneered.  He said we could stay in the barn for $100 a day each and have water from the outdoor tap for $100 a bucket.  Tempers got hotter than the red beans that my assistant chef had foolishly poured half a bottle of Trinidad Scorpion pepper hot sauce in.  Ay caramba!  Finally two of the women tackled the greedy fellow and beat smurf out of him.  Then they dragged him to a post and tied him up with some baling wire they found.
I wasn't about to jump in on this one.  I scratch easily.  My bad luck.  I thought he could take them, and worse than that lost $5 on the outcome to one of the combatant's husbands in a bet.  Then several people moved up to the fellow's house and made themselves at home.  That was uncalled for, I thought.  But, you don't try to mess with people that are already desperate.  I thought the fellow might be hungry and fed him a little of the red beans and rice.  Too hot for me to eat.  They must have put a whole nest of scorpions in that bottle.  He started yelling for water.  One woman reminded him how much water cost.  People are so rude.  I opened a pop tart when nobody was looking.  Hope all is well where you are.  Best wishes.  G

Powernoodle Day 25

If I had to execute an emergency exfiltration, I might grab this Streamlight ProTac HL-5 X spotlight.  It is a super thrower, and would probably make a decent skull-thumper.

DAY 25

Fire you say  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Y'awl have had to do some serious planning and clearly live in more dangerous/volatile climes than me. I live in a very urban type area (suburbs of London)

Moreover, as I live above a commercial shopping centre (or mall if you prefer?) I am surrounded by fire alarms and multiple sprinkler systems and about 2 minutes from the local fire brigade station. Therefore, it's more likely that I'll be mildy inconvenienced rather than cast into the wild and need some sort of zombie apocalypse type kit*

However, I do have a go to pouch (Nite Ize POCK-ITS XL) sat by the front door (you know, just in case  :dunno:)

I have attached two pics as I was advised that if "I" forgot to bring the resident bear** then I would have wished I'd died in the aforementioned disaster  :pok: :twak:

*That said it can look like that when the pubs close  :dwts:

**TBF I bought it him for Mrs Surge when we first met so he's been around for 27 years  :sa:
They don't like it up 'em!

Day 25.

Out and about so fire grabs would be the multitool, phone and any handy food or drinks I guess. The phone actually has a FLIR heat sensor which might or might not be helpful for seeing hot areas ahead through smoke. (?)

The preparedness by the workshop would have been a lot better - heat protective and flame resistant clothing, gas masks, and most importantly a boat and open sea.

Day 24

Oh, smurf...I think I'm gonna fall down this rabbit hole again.

The Gerber Dime is a tool I bought because I had an immediate need for some pliers. It served its purpose, and seems to have held up well given how badly I treated it. But if I had it to do over again, I'd have bought a dedicated pliers or a Squirt.

thanks. it went well. now the wait

Day 26.

Back to slightly offbeat photogear. This is a powerful ring flash. Sometimes trendy with fashion and model photographers - a tell tale white ring reflection in the eye gives it away. If the pupil is large at the same time likely a ring flash and not a constant ring light. My use has been product photography - as light comes from all sides around the lens it goes a long way to provide light without visible shadows. Any wanted shadows can be added via other lights. (The ringflash is also good for documents photography - works almost like a portable photo copier).

Final Mini-Challenge Schedule for July
July 27  SurgeUK Something you love but others don't / Hold my beer, I've got this challenge
July 29  Farmer X  Items evoking nostalgic memories of childhood.
July 30  IMR Military mini challenge / something you have but never carried mini challenge.  Two parts to this one.  Post both photos the same day, or combine both into one photo.  Post military item for first part.  Could be a military knife (or reissue/copy.  Could be something from your military time or your father's.  Photos, momentos, etc.  Doesn't have to be a tool.... because.... Second part.  Post a photo and CARRY a knife or multi you have already but never have carried.  Not even once.  July 30 will be the day to pocket it.

A few may still be finishing up the Day 25 Forest fire challenge.  I thought it was a lot of fun and thank friend comis for his leading the challenge.  I am happy to announce that my house is still standing and I am back home.  You will notice that friend Dan wanted to add a challenge for July 29.  You can refer to his earlier post on any specific requirements.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

Day 25

Found a box by the side walk with F R E E written on a flap.
Found a blade, Chicago Cutlery stamped, looked like a boning knife. Also was likely part of a block set.
Boy is it dull.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

On way to the house the smoke was in the air, crews were going house to house warning folk to leave.

My SUV was loaded and ready to head east to daughter’s (I have a key).
But when I got home fire rigs were blocking the drive, rig after rig were filling from my fire hydrant!  Wait till they get the bill.

Ii said I leave when the small ring moves.  They winked and told me I did not need to leave, I was the Central Command post, donuts would arrive shortly and if I had coffee, they will keep my roof wet!

Deal.

Eventually the wind changed direction back toward Canada, hoses were drained and wrapped up. When donuts were gone so were the crews. Now to clean coffee mugs, pots and gather the trash.

PS: Now to sharpen that free knife, I bet it can not cut warm butter. 😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

That's a fairly accurate statement.

Heat protective and flame resistant clothing...
I hope I'm never forced to pay for such things out of my own pocket. Those smurfers are expensive.

I've found my Old Hickory boning knife to be a very handy general-purpose kitchen knife. Your Chicago Cutlery knife will doubtless be just as handy once it's sharpened up! :tu:

Day 25
Having gone through a few evacuations for wildfire and hurricanes.  I have some preparations that are always in my car for whatever might happen.  These include some basic camping/survival geat because I learned a hotel or shelter may not be an option especially with a dog or even if available may not have power.

I also have a travel bag what I would consider 80% packed.  It has toiletries, medication, chargers, under garments, extra cash/credit card, and pets supplies for 4 days.  This was started as more a grab and go in case of travel due family emergency, but also works well for emergency evacuation.

Day25
Five years, I have never lived in one address/home for more than five years in my life.
Because of the need to be semi mobile the wife and I have  a thing for footlocker, ammo cans, and totes. So while we cutrently have a house with way too much stuff, the import things have pack & transport ready.

24hrs is a good lead
4people, 3 dogs, 1 cat, a truck and a jeep....

Aside from the usual excesses of clothing, housewares, furniture, and my larger workshop tooling we could strip everything important out of the house in the given time
We can probably evacuate with camping gear, important documents & photos in under 30min

So given this is a "Survival" challange my pic today is an old school survival knife, the Buck 639 Fieldmate with a ">"1987 date code.

I've never gone through such things. However, an aircraft director (ABH1) on my ship lost his house due to a wildfire over WESTPAC 2003-2004. I felt really bad for his wife and kids. Good solid advice you gave, too! :salute:

Most of my emergency kit lives in the car already.

This first aid pouch contains a Surge, but kit, ratchet, a pack of wood and metal saws, and some actual first aid supplies, while a Raptor sits between the front seats.

Besides them, my main things to grab would be a portable hard drive with my photo archive and copies of important documents, and a powerbank, but they’re just boring black boxes with cables sticking out…

Day 24 of 30

My new multi purpose tool.

Glad you have something to deal with the snakes!

Day 25

We're actually at camp today, which is one of our more likely evac locations in the event that our town burns down, gets tornadoed, etc. As far as tools (besides the camper) I'd wager a ST300 is a good bet. I have one at home that I could grab on the way out and one at the camper.

Nice emergency tool kit.
Old photobooks are great to look at, but being able to put all that onto a portable hard drive is nice for portability in an emergency.  I have one that is kept with some olde heirloom jewelry and important documents so all together.

Sounds like the fire was probably the same one I evacuated for.  2003.  I was fortunate in my apartment was just spared.  My CO and a chief lost their houses.  About 2 months  before that I was on the east coast for training when I hurricane hit.  Didn’t have to evacuate, but was isolated and without electricity for a week.
I think Sherry showed us all just how it SHOULD be done.  Great prep and great lesson.  Best wishes.  G

Day 25:

Living in an urban environment doesn't mean neglecting preparedness. My car kit is stocked with essentials for unexpected situations.

However, due to city regulations, a fixed blade knife isn't part of my in-car arsenal. That said, it's a crucial tool I'd grab in a real emergency.
