Beneath that is an Opinel No 8 with some beautiful patina on the blade.
:like: And the Premier is pretty clean. I may try to polish the scales if I can keep the cross intact, though.

This is a 1996 Wenger Tradesman...

What's not to love about fast deploying pliers?  Earning a badge for blood blisters.
I've never gotten a "love bite" from such pliers. Guess I'm lucky?

You gotta show off the stamp and combo tool though.
I posted that photo in Wenger Wednesday. Pretty neat Champion Plus you have there, too!

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 22
Three-Layer Thursday

Illustrating an SAK preference with Victorinox: no back tools (Farmer), back layer Phillips (Hiker), and corkscrew (Camper). Mrs. Roberts should appreciate the scale swap done to the Camper.

Day 22

Throwback Thursday

This Remington Camp Knife is an interesting piece.

For starters, it is quite a bit larger than the typical scout pattern at 4 3/4” long.

Instead of a can opener, it features a sheepsfoot blade (in addition to the main clip point blade).  For a lot of folks, this is probably an improvement, even though the tool has fewer functions.

It also features one of the largest awls I think I’ve ever seen on a folding tool.

That's a pretty cool camp knife.  Never seen one before.

Day 22 : Three Layer Thursday!

I don't carry this SwissBuck Taskmate I as it's a shelf queen, but every now and then I use it at my desk.  I can't see myself needing a small pair of pliers when I'm out and about, but I do need smaller pliers from time to time when I'm at my desk fiddling with stuff.

Day 23
Fixed Blade Friday

One of our members from Texas who went by the handle of Diamond started this thread about a year ago.  At that time, he was posting prolifically.  Then one day he was just.... gone.  That seems to happen fairly regularly here.  Lots of reasons for that I suppose.
Fixed blade is the Kizer I won last month.  I have carried it some.  Instead of fastening it to a belt, I usually just put it in a back pocket of my pants.  Not too heavy.  A friend asked me why all the new knives have blades that are so wide?  He also wondered why none of them have guards, and what the loop on the end was for?  Best wishes.  G

I like big scouts, but I think I'd take the can opener. Even without cans (which still comes up occasionally) it's too good for clamshells and the like.

If you put your finger through the loop at the end, i guess it would kind of negate part of the need for a guard. As far as width goes, I would think aesthetics as well as slicing performance. There is something nuce about a good slim blade though. Easy to carry.

I would say that, all other things being equal, a wider blade allows for a thicker spine and stronger blade overall, while maintaining bevel angles that are suitable for cutting.

On your knife, the deep finger groove combined with the flaring of the handle where it meets the blade forms an integral guard.  As to why it doesn’t have a more traditional guard, I suspect the main reason is to keep manufacturing cost down, but it is also a functional and aesthetic decision.

I’d say the loop is a finger loop.  You could put your pinky through it in a forward grip, or your index finger in a reverse grip, and it would aid in retention/provide a more secure grip.  I suppose it could also function as  an oversize lanyard hole, if one were so inclined.

Day 23: four layer Friday!

Carrying a Huntsman today.

Put plus scales in this one and replaced the toothpick with a firesteel. This one is also carrying firestarting tinder in the corkscrew. Fun fact, I used to tape a vaseline soaked cottonball in the corkscrew for the same purpose before I had these nice pre made tinder pieces. You can also cut the tinder in half and carry the eyeglass screwdriver on top if you want to.

I also wrapped thread around a sewing needle and shoved it in the gap under the saw. If I ever need it, just use the tweezers to retrieve it. I think I saw this in a Felix Immler video. I probably got most if not all of these ideas either here on the forum or on one of his videos. It’s been a while since I set this one up. I may or may not have put a fish hook and fishing line under one of the scales. I don’t remember and I don’t want to take the scale back off 😂.

Haven't carried this one much. I was so excited to get it, but 1st impression moving from the ST300 & Surge it was kind of disappointing. I have warmed up to it since then, but still find it bulky for the tool load especially compared to the Rebar.

And a correction to my Wednesday post; I was thinking about old jobs and realized I probably got the Tradesman in late '97, not '96

Just a random PSA for those who don’t read the deals section: Check stock at your local Academy Sports. They have a few SAKs and Leathermans for half off or steep discounts. Just bought two cadets for 21 dollars each. They had a wood spartan for the same price and a FDE Skeletool for 39.

Day 23: Four Layer

This late 60s/early 70s (best guess) Fisherman isn't my oldest SAK, but I think it has the most interesting vintage tool assortment. I believe every tool except the toothpick is at least cosmetically different from a modern Swiss army knife.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The tweezers are metal tipped (probably aluminum by the date). The scales are thicker than modern, I've never had an issue with modern scales and durability, but it is noticeably different if you tap them. The keyring is attached to a sort of extra mini liner.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Main blade, no major differences. Cool tang stamp though. Small blade is a clip point. Awlways nice to have a second blade style on a knife.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Remaining front tools. No ruler on scaler, no half stop on bottle opener, PAT can opener. The scissors have an adjustable screw (which is nice) but have trouble sitting in line correctly (less nice). Not sure if it's due to age or the older spring design without a groove.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
No hole on awl, but FILE on the screwdriver. Vic really should bring these back, I'd strongly consider switching to team Tinker instead of Spartan.

Instead of a can opener, it features a sheepsfoot blade (in addition to the main clip point blade).  For a lot of folks, this is probably an improvement, even though the tool has fewer functions.
I'd prefer the can opener. But if the sheepsfoot blade could be added in a third layer, I'd welcome it.

I can't see myself needing a small pair of pliers when I'm out and about, but I do need smaller pliers from time to time when I'm at my desk fiddling with stuff.
Same here!

Instead of fastening it to a belt, I usually just put it in a back pocket of my pants.
I've avoided back pocket carry of anything that can poke, prod, jab, etc. for a long time...ever since I put a screwdriver in my back pocket, sat down, and nicked the upholstery in my '63 Ford Falcon.

This is a knife I had made.  It's D2 steel with ivory micarta.
Spiffy! :like:

This late 60s/early 70s (best guess) Fisherman isn't my oldest SAK...
I'd say your guess as to its age is accurate. It would be really cool if it had the fish inlay.

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 23
Black Oxide Friday

Here's an interesting curiosity from Leatherman, the Shooter. It was targeted at surfers. The fins/teeth on the little yellow holder are a surfboard wax comb. Insofar as I'm aware, all of them had a black oxide finish.

Day 24
Spartan Saturday

Spartans large and small.  Actually Vic didn't call the 84mm version the Spartan Small for some reason, but that's about what it amounts to.  More about the small one on Sad SAK Saturday.  I like the 84mm Vics pretty well actually.  Except for the keyring nubs on those things.  Both the 84mm and the 85mm Wengers gouge my hand when I use them with that accursed keyring nub.  I would rather have a hole through the knife for placing a tether or lanyard.  Or even a bail.  I have de-horned several through the years.  Most recently a Wenger.
Best wishes.  G

Day 24: Sad SAK Saturday.

This isn’t a swiss army knife, but I think it fits the theme well. I am not sure how this tool got so rusty. It sat for a while and next time I opened it up it was rusting. The tools were really stiff to open, now they have loosened back up again.

Cheating a little here, this isn't actually mine...it's the wife's. This is a Spartan Lite with blue transparent scales I gave her 20y ago, attached is a ResQme glass breaker/strap cutter.
Since I don't have have a Spartan of my own I swapped knives with her for the day.

Day 25
See Through Sunday

Ruby Tinker.  I walked up to the little spring that runs down by my house.  It used to be on the surface as it reached my lawn but has gone underground in recent years.  I put the Tinker beside the water, and it promptly slid in.  The water is less than two inches deep and maybe two feet wide, so finding the knife was no problem.  There are deer trails up to the water and across it, so the beasts drink here every day.  There is a pretty good stretch of fairly fast water that is still above ground before it goes subterranean.  Best wishes.  G

Day 24: Spartan

I think this is my last Spartan, and it has a little bit of a story to it. During the pandemic, I started a low-residency grad school program up in Maine. We were supposed to go in for a week in the summer, but the college decided to stay virtual into 2022. My wife has family in New England, so we drove up for a little road trip in 2021 anyway. One of the stops we made as Casco Bay Cutlery in Maine, where I bought this Spartan. I didn't really think a ton of it at the time, I just knew we were hoping to go camping more often. I wasn't sure where my old Hiker was (it turned up at my parents' eventually) and my wife and daughter didn't have any knives, so I got the Spartan and they got Tinkers to make sure we covered all our bases. Those were the first SAKs I bought as an adult, other than replacing the Classic on my keychain once or twice. I wound up browsing the SAK wiki in our hotel room one night on that trip, and eventually wound up here, with far too many SAKs.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

It's an older one. I forget if it was just NOS or if we fished it out of the TSA jar. Swapped the back scales in store (as they've been kind enough to do for several knives I've bought for various reasons) for one with a pin hole.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I went to the craft store later that summer and bought a bunch of different kinds of pins to try in there. Settled on this fat head one. It'll fit with the corkscrew (but not the screwdriver) is easier to grab, and adds a little color.
