Day 12

Had a difficult time balancing the Chapman ratchet and camera while reaching up to photograph tightening the interior rearview mirror.  In the photo are portions of the ratchet, the extension, mirror, and windshield.

Those look identical to the Chapman bits. I wonder if they are the same, and if so if Chapman is the OEM.

Day 1 (Une) out of competition, I got the Ratchet today , includet was also such an Swiss Made Plier Multitool thing which was not that interesting ..  ,
The Ratchett is much more interesting ; it’s takes Standard Bits allthougt it’s a Bit tight fit, especially for the non Victorinox Bits .., the Swiss where a bit lacy designing it : there is actually a quite under engineered System to change the screwing direction : you turn the Ratchet Head.. , I was expecting a tiny lever like on these other bigger ones for the Bolts , but therefore it’s too small ..
I did now came up whit the Set of Bits for EDC
Your SAK is only fully yours, when it bites you, or you opend a Trink of your joice whit it
SAKs i have: Huntsman Light (Red Transparent), Workchamp (Black), Wenger EvoGrip S557 (Red), Swisschamp XLT (Red Transparent).. Swisschamp (Blue Transparent) Cybertool L (Blue Celidor (custom scales) , Huntsman (Black Celidor) , Victorinox EvoGrip S557 (Red, but sadly lost in my house somewhere) Victorinox Delemont S17 and S57 ..  , waiting for: Swiza D09 Blue

DAY 11 (Catch Up)

I was at a friends house yesterday and took the opportunity to collect my latest SAK  :2tu:
I had no use for a ratchet so her husband and I went for a beer (or several  :drink:) whilst she went out with her mates  :dunno:

Regardless, here's a shot of the new arrival with a ratchet

So, after another day of failing to find an actual use (see Day 11)  ::) I managed to find a use  :ahhh
Mrs Surge announced that a shelf in our her bedroom was not secured to her satisfaction. I did as directed  :pok: :twak:

No use so far, but my earlier post prompted me to get out the Chapman set for a pose. Gotta love those hollow ground slotted bits.

More fiddling... This time with Anex. Just applying more plastic wood and sand it to a more smooth finish.

DAY 11  MTs and pocket tools are not new.  Check out this old guy, with three screwdriver tips.  There was another version that had sockets.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

I had one of those a long time ago!  I loved the design but the ratcheting mechanism was broken on mine so I think it might be gone now.

Day 12:

I tried using the Leatherman ratcheting bit driver on the swiss+tech Trex.  it works, but I am disappointed to report that the magnetic bit driver on my Trex was machined a little large.  It still functions but all the different bits and bit extensions that I tried had a little wiggle room.  Just enough to be annoying.  Not sure it it is just MY Trex or all of them.

Day 13

This design of ratcheting stubby is quite nice. I have five brands of it.
MichaelPro seems to be the most common and inexpensive.
More info here.

The carousel can be removed, and 9 bits fit very comfortably. Or, you can remove the peg that the carousel sits on in the cap, and remove some material from the compartment, and fit 12 bits. I've got a few longer bits in there. If you use only standard bits or even stubby bits, you could fit maybe 20 bits in there, which is crazy. :tu:

AI says they are two distinct brands.  Maybe the patent holder licensed both, or maybe the patent ran out  and they make the same thing.

DAY 13  Day 13 and I think I finally hit the bottom of the ratchet stash.  I think this purchase is somehow the fault of this forum, I just can't remember how it all happened.  The ratchet part is OK, but the bits are pretty crappy, and the entire tool is not light.  However, I was inspired while taking the pic.  I have a good set of Brownell's gunsmith bits, but there is no ratchet handle for them.  I removed the crappy bits from the handle, and put the driver in my gunsmith tool drawer.

I don't know, but I just tried one in my PocketWrench 2.  The ball detent did hold it in place very well.

A general note on manufacturing.   The city I worked in had a forging company that made its own brand of hand tools, which were not widely distributed.  One of the managers told me that they made tools for several larger brands, but he could not disclose the names.  It's common with a lot of forged parts, including firearms.

Yeah, there’s a lot of contract manufacturing in the tool world. An interesting site is alloy artifacts which gives some history on many of the American tool brands. You can see how many contracted stuff out for various tool lines over the years.

Day 13:
Part of my travel toolbag (not the kind I can reasonably carry in a backpack though): USAG ratchet (same as Facom R.180 with USAG branding), and all the USAG bit kit fitted in SOG bit holders [the only good thing of the SOG bit kit], only one of them shown here.

Day 13:

I got a new top tool box today, I’ve been out of room for awhile. The first two pics are the old box and the new.

While sorting stuff to transfer over, I came across a ratcheting screwdriver I didn’t even know I had. Odd little thing. Though not ver little, it’s close to 8” long when not using the T configuration.
