Back when I was a wee shaver, the teacher would embarrass you in front of everyone by making you stand in front of the class on your birthday.  The class would sing the birthday punishment to you.
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday Dear (Marlowe and Storm)
Happy birthday to you.
   (Second verse)
How old are you?
How old are you?
How old are you (Marlowe or Storm)?
How old are you?
Then came the hard part.  As you stood there red faced and looking at the floor while swaying from foot to foot you had to sing back to the class.
I'm seven years old.
I'm seven years old,
I'm seven, I'm seven,
I'm seven years old.
You only sang that part if you were seven.  If you were another age, you modified the song to correspond as demanded by the annual norm.
THEN came the version that the kids would sing to you on the playground during play time.
Happy birthday to you,
You live in a zoo,
You look like a monkey,
And you smell like one too.
Lots of singing in those days.  Remembering having to sing in front of the class still makes me cringe a little.
Best wishes.  G

Day 6

I wonder just how many MacGyvers there are out there?  People capable of not just carrying tools, but being able to do things with them.
What brought that comment on was watching some foolishness on Y-tube.  Folks making videos of themselves and their friends trying to eat repulsive foods.  Maybe you have seen the sometimes comical videos involving canned fermented herring.  Surstromming.
The part that fascinated me was the number of people (mainly men) who had no idea how to work a can opener.  A simple thing.  Some of the people didn't use one at all.  They just took hold of a kitchen knife and plunged it through the top of a can and started sawing.  In general, the knife wielders did better than most of the more mechanized group.
I have opened cans with a knife.  I never used a long kitchen knife.  Fairly hazardous, at best.  If a knife I was carrying didn't have a can opener blade, I would just use a regular blade.  Still some risk, even with the shorter blade.  Bad for the knife as well.
Has opening cans become a lost skill?  Do people not eat canned food, or are they just accustomed to the pop top?  The cautious (and smart) individuals opened their bulging cans of Surstromming outside.  One lone fellow used a Wenger SAK.  The openers that sit on the top of the can didn't work as well.  The ones that work from the side should have been easy, but many of the men couldn't figure out which way to turn the crank or seem to realize you have to pierce a hole first by squeezing the handles.  Took most people forever to get the can open.
Sometimes I wonder.  Best wishes.  G

so,i have some catching up to do.
the thread is looking pretty fine already  :like:

day 1
i realize that Mac was a minimalist, but i'm a bit the opposite of that.
i'll go with my EDC Climber and Deluxe Tinker, pocketed, with a Champ and my cobbled-together Farmer X in my Maxped Griphook [ i think that's what it's called]. i added a Spartan to the mix.
leathermans and assorted bits and pieces [some waxed thread, bit of inner tube/ranger bands, clips] supplement my Macgyvering.
i had a length of duct taped folded up,that was in the Maxped, the paperclip was in my wallet. i've moved the dt to my wallet.
back in 7th grade,1 of my teachers said i'm "like Macgyver" since i was always tinkering with something. guess he was politely telling me i didn'y pay attention in class

i changed the pin to 1 with a larger, brightly coloured head, which means i can control, and see it easier.
i also added a small bar magnet [canibalized from a laptop] which broke but that just means i have 2 small magnets to  :D

Day 2
my lighter quit,and,1 of my Macgyverisms is to strip these down,i save the springs [may work for small gun springs in jam] and use the leftover flint in my zippos.
Ranger bands on the bic for easy identification [nobody else i know does this,so can't steal my bloody lighter  :D]
20250403_084411 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr

Day 3
Duct tape,to fix a fix. the earth cable started poking out of this steam iron cord,i had insulated it,that tape was fraying,so i bound it in dt.

20250404_130548 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr

Day 4
not much Macgyvering, snipped a tag off a shirt
IMG-20250405-WA0014 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr

Day 5
to me,the Champ is the ultimate Macgyver knife [that's what everyone here called SAKs back in the day]  :D i dig the toolset.
when i used my duct tape a few days ago, some of the glue stuck to the exterior of the piece it was folded onto,i was binning a plastic packet,so cut a piece off it to wrap the dt. i didn't want to throw away that piece of tape   :D

My beloved Farmer, I got it new about 18 years ago. Crazy to think that was 2007 which seems like it should only be 5 years ago.

Day 6

I keep a 1/4 inch adapter with a Phillips bit (along with three paperclips) that will fit on the bottle opener on my Recruit in a Chapstick container with Gorilla tape on it.  I had debated getting an Explorer but I already carry a Classic SD for the scissors and I find this setup more versatile and pocketable.  Got the idea for the socket adapter from Nikgyver on YouTube.

It is called a Mission Wallet.  I purchased it several years ago on a website called blade art that I don’t think is around any longer, but I think Vapin Art still sels it.

Shout-out to a very capable little fellow: the Rambler!
It was also subject to a very complicated mod - my first one - I switched the toothpick (not a great fan) for a second tweezer  :2tu:

Cheers,

Day 5 (still a day behind )

The FIRST Robotics team that I mentor made it to the finals in their division at the Texas State Championship. Now on to the World Championship!

Just like MacGyver uses whatever he finds along the way, I wound up with a pocketful of robot detritus after the competition:
Three (3) small zip ties (robots are held together by these things!)
Two (2) 1/8" thick Vex 0.5" hex spacers
One (1) 1/16" thick ditto
One lock nut for a #10-32 bolt.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

Day 6

Lots of use today for my Spartan... opening boxes and packages. Spent some time in my shop trying to get organized. Needed to cut a board to length and did not have a pencil handy. The awl worked great scribing a line as seen in the before and after photos.
