Day 5

Much as I like the Case 65 pattern Folding Hunter (which was extensively used and discussed in last month’s Giants of June Challenge), the most common versions offer two 4” blades in a package that weighs roughly 6.7 ounces, which can be a bit much.

In contrast, the 75 pattern Moose has two 3.25” blades in a knife that weighs about 3.5 ounces total.  So, if one doesn’t really need that last 3/4” of blade, a substantial weight reduction can be realized.

Day 5

Just some light package duty today.  Might be something in there I could use for this challenge.....

I need to add a camp knife to my collection.  Every time I think about it, I can't find something that speaks to me.  When I was very young, I remember playing with my dad's camp knife.  He bought it in the 50's or 60's and it was black and cigar shaped - I wish I remembered the brand.  I think I want to buy one like that.  Time to go browsing ebay listings  😆

More painting today. The Peanut and I are now working to get the closet done in the master bedroom. The goal is to be done with everything in the bedroom today if all goes as planned.

Day 6

I have been hefting my Barlow around today.  I'm enjoying the size and weight because it's back to work and lightweight knives tomorrow.

I was thinking about what BPRoberts said about some Dockers having a zippered security pocket.:

Dockers makes a great pair of Chinos with a zippered "security" pocket that'll handle a good size knife well, and are dressy enough for most "business casual" or whatever we're calling it this week. Would probably look okay w/ a jacket if you needed to step up a bit. (I'm in slacks and an aloha shirt at work most days, not sure how dressy you need to get.) I think other brands have similar "anti-pickpocket" designs, Dockers are just what're easily available in my neck of the woods. Anything with a largish pocket "inside" the main pocket is good. Especially w/ keys, a wallet, etc. to help camouflage the bulge, I've gotten away with a good sized multi or folding hunting knife for challenges. A Mini Trapper would be no problem, and a full size probably wouldn't be out of the question depending on your fit, etc.

I hadn't tried looking for them yet because in my mind the pants would look too casual.   So while I was washing and preparing my clothes for tomorrow, I noticed something that I don't know how I had missed over the last 6 months.

That seam looks just slightly thicker than it needs to be...  well, damn!

( Note: that's a zippered security pocket, not the fly  )

I tried it out, and even the hefty Barlow feels fine carrying in that pocket.  It really helps that it sits higher and doesn't bounce around like it would in the regular pocket.

Well, that blows the reason for me doing light knives on work days, but I'm going to keep doing it anyway because my dress slacks don't have that pocket.

Thanks again for the tip!  I wouldn't have even looked if you didn't mention it.

Day 6

Work let me out of my cage for a bit today so I ran some errands.  Went to the store to pick up a shirt and some sandals and I ended up with a 2 bags full of kids clothes.  That seems to happen to me more often than not.   :dunno:

Used my little Klein to cut the tags off the sandals.

Day 6

Here’s my box opener grip.

Knife is pinched between the thumb and middle finger.  On larger blades, like this Case Moose, I end up pinching the blade.  On smaller blades, I could end up pinching the handle.  It’s wherever my fingers naturally land; functionally, it doesn’t change anything.

Index finger on the back of the very tip of the blade.  The index finger runs along the top of the box and acts as a stop, controlling how deeply the blade penetrates.  By adjusting the location of the tip of my index finger relative to the tip of the blade as well as the cutting angle, I can very precisely adjust depth of cut.

Day 7

NLKD - New Lightweight Knife Day.  It’s a Case Caliber Small Lockback with a lightweight Zytel handle.  It weighs in at only 0.8 ounces.  So far I’m liking this knife much more than the Tiny Trapper.

That does look nice Rich.

What style blade did CASE incorporate on this beast?

Reminds of the small lockbacks BUCK made.   I will snap a photo when I get back to the house to pack for mini vacation to dog sit these little guys.

DAY 7  First, I posted yesterday's as the second Day 5 in a row instead of 6.  That after my photo editing program told me I already had a pic for five.

So for day seven I have my Case Barlow.  Much snappier than the Imperial in looks and blade snap.
