Day 14

New Lightweight Knife Day.  Today I’m switching to a Gerber LST Mini.  This knife weighs in at an impressive 0.5 ounces… possibly 0.4 if I removed the lanyard.  After my mistake last week assuming the Ultralight LST was made in China, I looked up the LST Mini’s manufacturing location and it’s China.  Still, it seems to be made just as well as the one made in the US.  So far I’m impressed by this little guy.

Opening a package containing a knife I'll use later in this challenge.  The factory edge on the LST Mini is very sharp.

That's a can opener. Unless you were referring to the blunt tipped main blade.  Sailer's knives were required to not be pointy so they wouldn't use them to fight and stab each other or drop them on their own feet on a heaving ship.

I was wondering about the can opener.  That's a weird shape for a can opener.  Time to search Youtube for a video on how it works.

The second part made me laugh - sounds like they really knew their sailors.

Inside yesterday’s mystery package was this A.G. Russell medium (just under 3.5” closed) Stockman.

Seller claims the steel is BG42, though knife isn’t marked and, while it appears mint, came sans box or papers.

Stag scales, nickel silver bolsters, and brass liners.

I thought the stubby spey blade was interesting, along with the slight recurve in the main clip point blade.

I don't know about "officially" but my favorite way to use that type of opener is to make a starter hole (if the knife has an awl, I usually use it, otherwise aggressive use of the opener is required) on the SIDE of the can. Then work your way around so you take the whole lid off perpendicularly. I've seen/tried to use them more like a modern pocket knife opener (hook on the rim and cut in a circle on top) and find it's more work and difficult to get the whole lid off. If you're opening something chunky (say canned peaches) it can be a struggle to get them out when only half the diameter has been removed. See comparison pics below from the similar opener on an old Vic Soldier. I have that same (or very close) Italian knife somewhere, but I don't see any pictures using its giant opener in my files.

Thanks for the demo

It's crazy to see a can opened like that.  The sailors could have used the can as a weapon since they couldn't stab their shipmates with the knife

I feel like I read a true story about someone who was lost at sea and used a can lid as a knife to cut up fish or something, but I can't find it. I did find this slightly awkward Youtube video in the search though.

Edit: Found it! Poon Lim

I think today’s mini challenge with in the traditional challenge was all about can openers.

Thanks for sharing.
