Combo Edge 30 Day Challenge: 2-1-26 to 3-2-26
on: December 30, 2025, 12:36:43 AM
Welcome to the 5th annual Combo Edge Challenge.  In February through March (a combo of months) we will challenge ourselves by using a partially serrated blade on a folding knife or multitool.

Many good tools have a combo edge blade and most of us have at least one in our collection, whether that is because we thought it was a good idea at the time, or because the tool just happened to come with it.  Many people feel apprehensive about using them because they feel that it doesn't quite do the job that dedicated serrated or plain edges do, so why not use one or the other instead of a combo.  But if you ask me, I think that with a bit of finesse they can do anything that one needs for day to day tasks.

Some common tools that have a combo edge blade:
LM Signal,
Swisstool Spirit (with butter blade),
Leatherman MUT,
Benchmade Griptillian,
SOG Powerlock
Victorinox Soldier or 111mm
Skeletool
Gerber MP 400
Spyderco Delica

This is your chance to take out the knife or multitool that has a partially serrated blade that you haven't used much and put it through its paces.  You'll even get a badge out of it!

The 90-day Soldier challenge will be running in February. Since I'll be using a USCK, and I already have the 90-day badge, there's no reason to miss out on the Combo Edge badge.

I gotcha. This oughta be a pretty cool challenge! :tu: But I need to fix the list, as ElevenBlade will be the host and color commentator rather than a participant.

I will probably be out for this one, since I don't think I'm taking the Soldier 06 for SOLDIER ON! But I will plug that this is awlways one of the most interesting challenges year after year for anyone who is on the fence.

I cleared that up with the moderating team, and unfortunately you cannot earn both.

We ride at dawn!

I’m wondering if we are interested in mini challenges.  Every 5th day we’ll have an optional mini challenge, where there will be an additional requirement for the day.  We just did this in the Blacked Out challenge and it was fun to change it up a bit.

I’ll think of a challenge for day 5 and announce it tomorrow.

I think mini challenges are a good idea. I didn't have a bunch of blacked out tools, so lack of variation made it hard to stay motivated and come up with interesting pictures for 30 days.
I can see the possibility of this becoming an issue in the combo edge challenge as well.

So it begins!

Got a package in the mail, seems to be packed in a plastic bag wrapped around and around and around with packing tape.  It’s been kicked around and stomped on, from the looks of it.

Perfect job for the combo edged blade on the Skeltool KBx. I could slide it under the tape and cut away without accidentally cutting into the bag and contents

Day 1

Starting off with my favorite CE, the Spyderco Endura Thin red line.

Feels good to get off the black-out challenge so I can go back to carrying the usual suspects.
The biggest challenge with CE will be work days/mid week. Some CE knives are among my favorites for outdoor, doing maintenance work around the house etc. But for EDC and office I have different preferences.
I guess it wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy

Started the day at -8°F at 7:30a. Now it is a balmy +22° 😎

Day 1

Everybody's sick in this household with a cold of some variation or another so I had to break open a new package of tissue with my Kershaw Leek.

Trying to keep myself busy with simple stuff so I don't sit around complaining so I decided to remove some tags off of the new furniture.

Nice one, The blade tip having a downward angle has some advantages like a utility blade.  I notice the same on my Skeletool

I dread such packaging jobs. Was it a new knife or multi?

It's actually quite nice, certainly not as cold as the temps our friend @LoopCutter has to endure.
Weather so far this year have been weird, but nice. While we've had some periods of freezing cold (down to about -5F), I appreciate that it's been very stable weather with below freezing temps throughout (typically around 15F). Makes life much easier when it doesn't alternate between freezing and melting temps all the time. One problem with this nice weather is that we've had absolutely zero precipitation after Christmas, so the remaining snow cover is really old and poor quality. Skiing is still possible, but certainly not as enjoyable as skiing on fresh pow. It's sunny though - that helps :)
And yes, it's a sunset.

Well today, woke to double digits, +16°F, but snow falling about 1/2” and hour.

And for the record, FARMER X is just 3 hours north of me in eastern MICHIGAN, actually north of parts of CANADA😉. Likely more snow and just as or sometimes colder.

We have had snow since early November, anc sub freezing temps too!

Do today with clouds and snow, that pesky little ground hog has no way to see his shadow  :woohoo:, unless some little man reach’s in a pulls him from his burrow🤫

I hope for a early spring, think we deserve it, I do

Superb bones on that one! :tu:

Day 2

As long as you only use one serration, the serrated portion of the USCK actually does okay on receipt paper. Of course, the plain portion handles that job with no issue whatsoever.

Day One

I'll be a day behind as I drove from Texas to Georgia four times in the last eight days .  :P

Today's carry is a Kershaw Blur combo edged tanto. Great knife , pokey, slicey, assisted action. Used to open a 200 pack of 45 Auto.
