We had a high of 78°F over here.  Tell you what, we'll split the difference.  I'll send you 31° of warmer weather and you send me 31° of cooler weather.  Deal?!

Day 8

Using my Wenger Highlander this week.  Made short work of cutting open my son's allergy meds.

I wish we had a Menards down here.  I'd like the variety.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

   D E A L !

Your HIGHLANDER is an interesting knife, I do not know why, yet the partial SE is interesting.

I have SE Spartan but it is a full SE, and is great for opening letters.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Mini Challenge Announcement.

On Day 10 -

Two is One, One is Enough

When the Leatherman Supertool and the Gerber MP 600 were released, they had separate serrated and plain edged blades.  It was no surprise to me that when the PST 2 and the Gerber MP 400 were released that they decided to save real estate by using a combo edge blade.

Post a picture of a multi-tool that has a separate plain edge and serrated edge, along with a combo edge tool that you are using for the challenge.   Comment on which tool excels for which purpose.

In last month's Black Out challenge I used a Gerber LST which had a half stop.  I really enjoyed using it because the half stop gave me a sense of security when closing it.

Day 10 + Mini Challenge

Yes the ST300 was my first WORKING MT.  Loved the two different blades on it, actually allowing my to just carry a 58mm Vagabond for its orange peeler and nail file😏

But, then I was introduced to the REBAR, a smaller version of the ST300.   😇

I have multiple flavors of the REBAR, any of which are always within reach at home or in my vehicles.

Post a picture of a multi-tool that has a separate plain edge and serrated edge, along with a combo edge tool that you are using for the challenge.   Comment on which tool excels for which purpose. ]

My first REBAR! 😘

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
A contrast of three users, displaying a blade of each CUT😉

The PLAIN edge on a job site or now at home with domestic tasks, excels at cutting patterns, opening packages for food prep, slicing paracord cleanly, or separating those plastic retainers of clothing tags or matched socks.

The REBAR’s Serrated blade, serves great cutting cardboard to smaller sheets for recycling, or even cutting with or against the corrugated ribs. The edges are dangerously sharp, and it is easy to slice deeply, more deeply than intended, plus of skin tissue is involved can be much more painful that a PE cut.   The SE easily separates twine or stranded rope from one piece to TWO.
CUTTING BAILING TWINE, is another speciality, a one pass movement with little effort.  A REBAR is always on my belt when visiting a friends farm-stead, as there is always a cutting tasks I can do better than his CASE TRAPPER or VICE GRIP 🤫

The SIGNAL’s COMBO EDGE is a very good compromise.   This accompany me on hikes and trail work I volunteer.   The edge will cut stringy vegetation, heavy twine for marking off limit trails or guide lines to keep folk out of the marsh and on high ground (sometimes!)

Overall my preference is always a blade that is either a PE or SE over a combo style. And especially if the same handle has a blade with one of each, as my REBAR.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Day 9

Interestingly, the Gerber has a half-stop.

Another note I concluded, as having a half stop, this GERBER IS NOT designed for quick blade deployment. No thumb-stud, or inbuilt flipper tab on the back side.   It appears to be pinch deployed style.
This makes the half stop most practical! 😎
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I also, wanted to point out that as ElevenBlade noted, LEATHERMAN did conserve handle real estate by incorporating a COMBO EDGE BLADE, they also did it correctly in my book, as the SERRATED EDGE, utilizes almost half if not more of the blade’s cutting service, making this blade fully functional regardless of the tasks it is assigned, 😎🎉

I noticed the same with the Gerber LST.  There's no nail nick.  Its a pinch and pull

The multitool that I keep in my emergency bag in my car is my Gerber MP600.  An emergency kit wouldn’t be complete without a set of pliers. I also wanted to have a serrated blade with a sheepsfoot pattern. The spine on a sheepsfoot remains the same thickness for most of the length, giving it lateral strength. Also, like any rescue knife or boating knife, there’s less chance of inadvertent injury or a accidental cuts.

But for daily use my Leatherman Skeletool punches far above its weight class. I'm pretty sure I bought this before the plain edge version was out - I honestly don't remember buying it.  I liked it so much I decided to get a backup (since Leatherman is famous for discontinuing perfectly good tools ).  I went with the plain edge for the backup.  But it's still in the box.  I honestly have never been let down by the combo edge.  If it's ever had trouble making cuts, and it has, its because its not as sharp as it used to be - or should be.  I've neglected to sharpen it because it isnt as easy as other blades.  Maybe thats a demerit.  But I'm stubborn at times, and if it gets the job done, I'm satisfied.

Day 11

I do not expect many to agree with me, yet I find this Victorinox model, the MOST elegant COMBO BLADE design I own!

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The serrations located forward on the blade I found initially unusual, but as I used it and saw others showing it used in video clips, it clicked.  It is great for chopping, slicing and dicing for field meal prep.  It cuts rope cleanly, have used for field dressing game, trimming sprouts from the trunk, or cutting ROSE BUDS from a bush to make a small arrangement for my bride back in the day, only to be chewed out, as she preferred to just see the buds on the bush via the kitchen window.

Vic’s serrations are finer than others, remain sharper longer, and cut the cleanest of any of my combo knives.

This OHT, if it had a corkscrew, would be a favorite.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I also like serration on Vic knifes, its really handy to have serration on forward and straight part on near tang.

Day 10 (catching up

Two is one, one is enough mini-challenge

The SOG PowerLock has a combo edge, while the Leatherman ST300 has dedicated plain and serrated edges. At least 98% of my needs are handled best by the plain edge, but the serrated edge is great for cardboard and thicker cordage.

Day 11

The Gerber was a favorite of Sailors, because the pliers could be deployed with a flick of the wrist.

You just described the One Hand Forester. They make/made it with the plain edge and awlso combo edge. I have one with the OHO plain edge.

ETA: Of course I can't find one right now, and it may be discontinued. Awl I can find is the standard Forester and the plain edge OHO like mine. The serrated one is the 0.8361.MWC.

Day 12

This OPINEL, the No8 OUTDOOR, is the only combo blade by this company in my possession!

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The serrations are not waves, but shaped similar to a saw blade slanting rearward, providing more cutting edge going forward rather than the pull!

Very efficient, when used to cut cord or twine.  I have comfortably paired it with a SIGNAL on outings. The whistle is most annoying when needed.

Mini Challenge Announcement.

On Day 15 -

Combination of Combos

Combo tools aren’t limited to blades. Victorinox has several of them, as do the other brands. Even some traditional knives sport a bottle openers in unexpected places.

Post a picture of an any combination tool on a multitool or edged tool, aside from the half serrated blade that you are using for the challenge.  Use both and comment how you used them. One photo will suffice though.

bonus points if your post fills the bill for, and is posted to the Beer, Beans and Brats thread   :drink:  :drink:  :drink:  :drink:   https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87263.0.html
