Nice one. I was eyeballing these myself but haven't decided yet.. Do you know what kind of wood is this exactly and how does it feel compared with other wooden handled Victorinox and Wenger SAKs that you own?

They have two different woods; noce or nut, which is walnut; and beli, a tropical hardwood I hadn't heard of before. I have several walnut-handled knives, so went with the beli. It's a light-colored wood similar in appearance to oak. Also has a nice feel to it, though I'm not sure how to describe it. Very pleased with my choice.

There are several different models available.

Thanks. Interesting.. How are the exterior liners, the thin (like on the 2012 Damascus Trekker) or thick version (like on the 2011 Damascus Climber or the Sentinels), if you can tell? Is there any flexing of the scales if the knife handle is squeezed? I am assuming the wood scales are the standard nylon and DD thickness, so quite thin - am I wrong?

The beli appears to be similar to the thickness of the walnut on the OH Damascus Trekker. there's not a lot of flexing on either one.

Thanks. From the photos it appears that the Beli has one (of the two) exterior liner thicker, like the Soldier for example. Wonder why did Victorinox choose both exterior liners to be the thin version on the expensive LE 2012 Trekker instead of going the opposite way and using both exterior liners the thicker variant (like they did on the LE 2011 Climber, but maybe there there was no choice due to be Ebony scales).

Regardless, looks very nice and is reassuring to hear that the handles are sufficiently solid as they are.

The marlinspike is descended from a sacking needle. I still think sacking needle is a far better term, as it IMHO makes a poor marlinspike. I don't think Vic changed the tool when they started calling it a marlinspike. A good marlinspike is rounded, it hasn't got that sharp 90 degree edge along the side that one has. It can be used as a marlinspike, but it will be rather annoying.

That's exactly the reason I mentioned that it is sharpened - because I think this detail shows the transition from the sacking needle tool from the older 70s SAKs.

Personally I don't really care how the tool is called. That the tool is a compromise I think that's known, same can be told about most tools on a SAK.

I think the change from the mundane farming to the more appealing marine name term happened because of marketing reasons.

Anyway, I like the tool even if I am not using it as intended, either as a sacking (or sail) needle or some small marlinspike.

No objections from me there.  :tu:

I only have a single alox with marlinspike, so I didn't know they had such a noticeable development.

Just received my second Victorinox DAK KL88 (not my birthyear btw) in excellent condition. I love these models with their sturdier, unpolished can and bottle openers.

So it´s common that the DAKs have unpolished tools? I bought one and wondered if it was that way "in those days" or if this knife slipped teh polishing.

It´s a KL 90 btw.

Very cool! I read about it in that other thread

My latest is this gold plated Ambassador:

There is some damage on the back scale but other than that it's great. And it came with a Mountaineer, a Rally and a Classic (all virtually unused) at a very very very good price. A steal 8)
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

AFAIK they're supposed to be like that, and not just the DAK but other soldier versions as well.
