No problems, I was able to secure the knife anyway!
A little bit of competition with a forum member, but I have to admit that this was an interesting knife.

This thing came dirty. Dried bits of animal parts I think

Just opened the mail to get a used rangergrip 79.  What a big bulking thing.  This thing came dirty. Dried bits of animal parts I think

The risk of buying used. :-\ I hope it cleans up ok and that all the implements are in good shape.

I just noticed I didn't answer your question (;) not yours, WWW's, but still) in the other thread. Time to bump it.

You're a very good friend to me!   :drink:

What a super job you did on this knife.  I'm still not crazy about the inscription, but I've accepted it as a cultural thing and I love everything else about the knife.  I'm very happy it has the non-Evo scales, not that Evo would have been bad, but I just like it this way more.

This knife is like the UnitedWoods Collection to me in saying good by to Wenger.   :salute:

Somewhere in the mail I have a gift for Wenger SAK fans I think... right now though I'm backed up with stuff, snowed in, and I'm late on my Victorinox presents...  but all in good time.  This year I've adopted the lunar calendar so I have an extra month in 2013.

It looked dirty in the pics and it was.  Bits of brown and red.  I washed it in hot soapy water and gave it a good rinse. All impliments work as they should.  Lots of snap.

These Rangergrip 79s are great.

Lucky to find a NIB Teton recently retail for an old price. I like this SAK configuration and this Wenger's variant is almost perfection:
(Image removed from quote.)

Marius, can I use this picture for the wiki page?

We don't have a picture of the basic model. The one we're currently using is a stock picture hotlinked to the wengerNA site.

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Teton

Yes, please go ahead. I was away for a while and was about to miss this one.

I don't know anything about Wenger, but I could be interested if there is still a model around with the metal framed magnifier. From what I see in the pictures, the scissors seem to be better than those on the Victorinox.

Any suggestions?

2 that spring to mind apart from the fully loaded 54 are the J574 and 23.
I have both Vic and wenger models that sport the mag layer. I find the wenger version more difficult in use. But I agree it does look better, plus the end doubles as a micro screwdriver!!
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I did some searching on the net and the Wenger 23    :tu:   it will probably be as soon as I can spend the money on it.   :)

Do you happen to know how powerful the magnifier on the Wenger actually is? Is it similar to the Victorinox Explorer? And what do you think of the scissors compared to those of the Victorinox?

I don't know what the strength of the wenger magnifier is - but I don't actually like it that much to use, its very small. I much prefer the victorinox.
As for scissors, each to their own. But for me I prefer wenger. But be warned they are serrated, so if you're considering using for nails you'll need a file too - found on Wenger's not on many victorinox's.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Just to clarify, the magnifier of Wenger is primarily intended to start a fire (lile fire of scout camp) and the length of this tool has also allowed to add small flat screwdriver, so it's difficult to use the magnifier to enlarge details because this magnifier is too small.
Wenger scissors are primarily made to cut nails, cotton thread, nylon thread or fishing thread. That is why there is also often a nail file on Wenger (rarely on Victorinox). This nail file is often necessary to use after cutting his nails with serrated scissors. You can also cut papers, but in this case the Victorinox scissors are easier to use.
This is part of the "philosophical differences of use" between the two brands...

Hi JC

Is that the official line from Wenger?? I have never heard or read that before. I'm not doubting what you say is true , like I previously mentioned its horrible to look through.
How fantastic that wenger actually produced a proper survival tool.
Fabulous.

Well, I'm not sure it's official line from Wenger, this is just based on logical findings and also on the use of Wenger knives :
During lot of years Wenger shifted to camping, scouting, etc. And the company has made numerous advertising and commercial communications in newspapers such as 'Boy's life', 'Backpacker', etc... For me it's therefore legitimate to ask the question "why a magnifying glass on a camping knife or survival knife?" or "why scissors on a fisherman knife?". Wenger also made very special tools such as the 'Swiss Business Tool' with scissors made to cut paper but not for nails !
I think Wenger tried to adapt tools to specific uses, as Victorinox tried to make standard and universal  tools. It's just a personal idea !

So what do you call a Monarch with a locking blade?

So you really want to know?

I'm afraid it's not very exciting....

Wait for it...........

Regal

ya pretty boring..... but better than "Monarch with Packlock"

....If you put black scales on it then apparantly it's not a Regal anymore but a "Valiant with Packlock"

One more mystery solved for North America.  Anti-climatic, but satisfying.

More SAK naming mysteries revealed at a later date.

This is my latest purchase (quite cheap).
The knife is just a Ranger 05 (so nothing special).
However, I think you don't see this kind of package so often, so I took few pictures.

Do Wenger knives come with a 5 year warranty only, because that's what I read on the package?     :o

Victorinox on the other hand comes with a lifelong warranty!    :tu:

What's the story on this?

Good observation!
This package is quite old, from the 90's and at that time the warranty was apparently only 5 years.
This changed over time, as now is for lifetime.
http://www.wenger.ch/warranty-swiss-army-knives.
This was for Europe.
In North America all the papers from the 70-80 show a lifetime warranty.
However, I'm not sure if this warranty was given by Wenger or (more probably) by Precise International (the distributor).
I had a look at my catalogs to see when the change happened, but there is no mention in there about warranty.
Will have a look at the warranty papers that usually come inside the knife boxes to see if I'll find the information there.

Jean Claude was the same auction you saw?

I forgot to mention that I just received an answer from the german seller.
He very kindly gave us permission to use the auction pictures for the wiki.
He also told me that unfortuantely he was not able to find the original pictures anymore.

That makes total sense on the mag glass, it is almost impossible it use as a magnifier. Thanks for that bit of info makes me look at the wenger glass in a whole new light.
