Day: 02

Prepping for the Canada trip today, so I'm not anticipating any big knife needs. I chose this Bow-legged Joe by Andy Roy for today's carry:

Poor guy is a bit abused and needs a spa day. Despite what that big scratch might imply, Andy has the steel (1095, I think) on this wee beastie treated to a high hardness. It takes and holds a good edge, but I find it a bit tricky to sharpen, actually.  You might think that a simple straight edge would be easier to sharpen, but the hard steel makes keeping this straight edge a bit tricky when free-handing.

It's a three-finger design with amazing ergos and lovely handle scales (ironwood over black micarta). The blade length is almost exactly the same as a 93mm SAK's main blade.  The ergo allow for an incredibly powerful cut or slice at the tip. It's a tough little knife and it sometimes gets used a bit harder than a little knife should.

It gets housed in a kydex sheath and dangles from a belt loop. (I used to have it attached to a bag, but it saw less use in that arragement. Still, I liked the little attachment system and kept it whe I transitioned to pocket carry.) Left out here, normally the knife just dangles in my pocket. It is easily pulled out one handed, so it is very convenient.

An odd looking little knife, but in hand it becomes incredibly useful. Sort of a utility knife on steroids.  :tu:

I presume its the style of knife made in the Mora municipality, there were between 15-20 knife makers there over the years, i regard all mine as Moras whether they ended up as part of Morakniv or not, when i say a different Mora everyday they are not necessarily Morakniv, although most of mine ended up under that company  :tu:

Thanks. :hatsoff: Now they are saying tropical storm force winds may be here around 8 tomorrow morning but they keep changing that arrival time because the storm has been lingering over the Bahamas for so long, over 24 hours.

I foresee this conversation in my future:
Neighbor, "Alan, shouldn't you wait until it stops raining to fire up the generator?"
Me, "I've got to post my pictures on MTO!"

Day 3

Ahti Juhla Finnish Puukko next to my morning read, for smaller knife, I quite like the rat tape construction which commonly found in Puukko, together with the handle, it usually result in a more balanced knife.  For outdoor or wood use, I almost always prefer a true scandi grind over convex or scandivex.  I think it is actually harder to make a true scandi grind, but easier for user to maintain it.

I have been eyeing Andy Roy's knives whenever I go knife shopping, and hear nothing but good review about his work.  This is an interesting knife shape, how thick is the actual blade stock?

I don't know whether you own the Spyderco Sharpmaker(I sworn by that), but If the stock is relatively thin(like 1/8 or less), maybe just put on a utility grind at 15 deg each side via the Sharpmaker?

Jokes aside, knowing your background I knew you would be well equipped for this kind of situation, but please do stay safe anyway, and hope other folks in the area are better prepared this time.
