DAY 09:

My currently most used knives in the kitchen. The Opinel is a #7, it gives a good idea of the size of my hunter.

Yes. I would say it's the primary use for these and they should absolutely not be used for cutting hard wire or nails.  I like that they come with a removeable file for sharpening the shears. They're on sale on Amazon for $17.69.

Cheers, out of stock here but will certainly keep an eye open for them  :tu:

Day 10. Gerber Folding Sportsman II, ca. 1970s. I wish Gerber still made them. They produced them through 1995.  There were three, the Folding Sportsman I, a small lockback; the Folding Sportsman II at 4 1/2" (what I have here) ,and the Folding Sportsman III at 5 1/8". It's just a smidge smaller than the 110, so it works in my opinion. Good Folding Sportsmen can be expensive.

Day 11. 1965-1969 Case 6265 Folding Hunter.  Like the '74-80 Buck 110 you've seen often used for size comparison, it belonged to my great-uncle. He deer hunted with both knives but preferred the Case.  I ended up with both, as they weren't necessarily practical knives to other relatives who picked knives from his collection (including MUCH more practical Case Jacks and Stockmen); but they were my primer on big knives. Both still see a lot of use, though I have my eye on a $50 used Buck 110 Pro S30V; which may result in the '74-80s full retirement; as I much prefer its 440C to 420HC; but S30V is a step above 440C; and not in LT form like my CPM-154 110.   The Buck's sheath is original to the knife, and still going strong, with monthly application of Huberd's Shoe Oil (though I prefer the current nylon sheath as it's cheap to replace). The Case's sheath is period correct, but not original to the knife.  The Case Folding Hunter is nigh impossible to find in CV versions these days. Case made yellow 3165 and 3265 versions until relatively recently, but chose to retire both. That really sucked. I'm probably just gonna go with a Schrade or Kabar in the same pattern and carbon steel (examples include the 125OT linerlock one-blade, 25OT two-blade; and 225H from Schrade USA; and the 1184 from Kabar, which was probably made by Camillus). I'm really leaning towards the one-bladed 125OT or it's little brother, the 123OT (which is a reasonable 4" closed).   I have a carbon steel Rough Ryder Folding Hunter--not a bad knife for $15, and it may get used in this challenge once I touch up the blades--it's been a rough use and work knife since new.

Alan, I am sure you gonna love these 2 without a doubt.  These are some of my favorite small fixed blades, both offer pretty good grip while remaining relatively small to carry.  Love em'!

Day 12

Kabar opened another coffee packet in the morning, sometimes these tin foil packet served as a rudimentary sharpness indicator for me--if I can't slice it open with ease, the knife is ready for sharpening.

Really good pictures everyone.  Is a folder with 2 blades really a direct competitor for the Buck 110? I think it's more of a large trapper pattern but we have been fairly loose with the interpretation so far.  I'm shocked to learn that a can of sardines contains fish!

Day 12
Package duty again for the Schrade 60T, but this time it was for 5 very poorly wrapped water filters in a soft pack, without any padding, and looking as if the package had been run over by a truck.  I can't believe they didn't put these in a box.
